Specification of Letter-alumna To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cmmnns I citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce, State of Washingtomhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Locomotive-Tank-Valve Releases, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for controlling the valve in the tank of a locomotive, and has for its objects to provide such a device which will hold the valve open whenit is desired to have the valve 0 en and which will allow the valve to c ose when it is desired to close said valve; also a device whichwill automatically allow said .jvice's, mechanisms, and arrangements illusi trated in the accompanying drawings, in
'which:
Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly in section, showing my device in use;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof showing it in the position occupied thereby when the valve is open; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing it in the position occupied therebywhen the valve is closed, and also 'showin the connection to the locomotive being roken as when the draw-bar has parted.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar-parts throughout the'several views.
When,in a railroad accident, the drawbar between the engine and the tank has parted, the pipe connections are broken under the strain and the contents of the tanks immediately flow freely}. through I the said brokerii pipes. In the case of an oil-burning 'locomotive this is very dangerous-fies well as expensivajsince. this oil is spread on the ground and-'"inay readily; be ignited, thus possibly destroying the' train and doing great damage otherwise.- In order that this 'outflow'l may be automatically istopped as soon= as the draw-bar between the engine. and tank has parted, I have devised ing described mechanism".
-The tank car 1 is attached'to the'flocomo,
the follow adapted to close it. A strong spring 6 presses said valve 5 downward on said seat to close the passage. A suitable pipe 7 leads from the seat 4 to the locomotive.
The valve 5.is held open, against the action of the spring 6, by a rod 8 which passes through the top" of the tank and which is connected to the valve stem by means of a chain or cable 9.. The rod 8 is secured in a head 10, which is pivoted in the two arms 11 of my holding and releasing device. This consists of a member bent and formed so that when it is holding the valve open (as in Figs. 1 and'2) the two arms 11 are bent slightly back of the vertical so that the line of strain of said rod 8 comes well forward of the lower corners of said arms-11; the arms are bent at their lower corners to forni short bases 12, and these are bent u ward and toward each other, as at 13 to orm a stem 14 which is slightly raised above the ta nk top; this stem extends to the front edge of the tank and is then bent down at less than a right-angle to form the short extension 15. A notch 16 is made in the lower side of the extension 15 and a spring 17 is secured to-the lower side of the part 15 and extends downward to close over the notch 16.
A cable or rope '18 is secured to the roof 19 of the cab and passes over a ulley 20 and then down and terminates in a ink 21. This link 21 is adapted to 'lie in the notch 16 in Patented Jane '25, 1918. 4
the spring 6 will then pass outside of said corners thus allowing it to turn. This releases the rod 8 cable 9 and valve 5 so that the spring 6 W11]. force the valve down on the seat 4. If'the draw-bar?) should be broken, the locomotive will move away from the tank and the cable 18 will then pull on the-extension 15 and turn the device as before described, thus automatically closing dowvn' 'saidvalve 5.
Having 'described;my invention, what I claim is; e
. 1:; Incombination, a valve,'means tending to close the'valve, a device operatively connected to said valve and adapted in one posia device operatively" connecte v and comprism a stem and an arm projectclosure of the valves 2. In combination, a valve, means acting to close said valve,.a hold and releasing to said valve ing substantia y at a right angle from'one secured end of the stem, the other end of said 'stem' 1'5 bein offset in a direction opfosite to that in w ich said arm extends, sal arm ada ted in one adjustment of said device to hol the a valve open, and in: another adjustment to permit the valve to close under action of 20 .said closing means, a spri ofi'set end of said stem, an a cable releas-' abl secured by said spri to said device an adapted to actuate sai device to efiect I a closure of the valve.
