WW IA. aim 5107a. @3004 Q UNITED STATES JAMES A. JOHNSTON, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,063, dated May 21 1872.
Specification describing a new anduseful Improvement in Wheels, invented by JAMES A. JOHNSTON, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas.
The invention will be first fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of drawing is a plan View withnut oft. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of hub attached to spokes.
A represents the section of a double hub, provided with body a and projecting tube a threaded on the outside of end a but having a polygonal or angled perimeter at a adjacent to the body. B is a ring of rubber or other elastic substance. 0 is another section of hub, made polygonal on the inside surface 0. D is a nut. E E are two sets of spokes, one on each section of hub, but all fastened within the same rim F. The section A is applied to section 0 so that the tube a will protrude therethrough, and the polygonal part a of tube will fit snugly within the polygonal surface 0 of the section 0. The nut D is then screwed on and the sections brought as near together as is requisite to properly tighten the spokes and hold them firmly in position. Between these sections of hub there may be used rigid spacing rings or pieces, adjustable or otherwise, but I prefer to employ the elastic ring B, because nothing is then needed in case of spokes working loose but to screw the nut up against it until the looseness is fully taken up and the tire fully tightened.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, What I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
l. The sections A C of a hub, constructed and combined with a nut, D, and elastic ring, as and for the purpose described.
2. The sections A O, constructed and adjustable one on the other, in combination with an intermediate elastic ring, B, as and for the purpose set forth.
