Be it known that I, JOSEPH GOULDBOURN,
a subject of the King Of England, residing particularly to means for positioning the shoe with reference to the heel trimming cutter.
In a type of heel trimming machine in common use the position of the shoe with reference to the cutteris controlled by means of guiding devices which engage the shoe in the rand crease and at theedge of the toplift,
and the toplift guide is arranged with reference to a tread rest for the heel to present a narrow guiding surface with which the edge of the topliftis engaged. It has been foundV advantageous in the construction of such devices to include provision for adjustment to vary the width of the effective guiding surface of the toplift guide to accommodatefvariations in the thickness of the toplift on shoes of different sizes or styles. Such adjustment is particularly advantageous in trimming heels some of which are provided with rubber toplifts, since toplifts of this material are usually of greater thickness than leather toplifts, and in view moreover of the fact that the rubber is more likely to slip on thel guide, it is particularly desirable Y in trimming heels provided with rubber toplifts to increase the width of the toplift guiding surface. In providing for` such adjustment it is important, in order to avoid loss of time and also to insure that the operj ator shall change the adjustment whenever such a change is desirable for the best results on the work, to arrange the adjusting means for ready manipulation by the operator to effect a quick and certain adjustment of the parts.
An important object of this invention accordingly is to elfect improvements in heel positioning means for heel trimming machines, and particularly to providea construction in which a ready and quick adjust- Specification of Letters Patent.

In the illustrated construction, in accordance With a feature of the invention, the positioning means is arranged for substantially translational movement to adjust the width of the effective guiding surface of the toplift guide in such manner as to insure a substantially uniform width of guiding surface around. the periphery of the toplift guide in any position of adjustment.
A further feature consists in shoe positioningmeans constructed and arf'anged for adjustment to vary the width of the effective vguiding surface of the toplift guide, and
means for insuring a substantially uniform Width-of said guiding surface throughout the `peripheral extent of the guide for all positionsof said adjustment. In the construction herein shown the shoe positioning means comprises a toplift guide and a tread rest adjustable with reference to said guide to vary the width of the effective guiding surface of the guide, with means for maintaining the tread rest in substantially the same angular relation tothe guide in all positions of its adjustment.
The above and other features of the invention, including certain details of construction and combinations of parts, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings which embody a preferred form of the invention, and will' be pointed Out inthe claims.

Mounted upon the front of the machine is a bracket 8-which carries a portion of the shoe positioning mechanism including the toplift guide 10, this bracket being adjustable longitudinally ofthe cutter axis to vary the position of the toplift guide longitudinally of The bracket is held in adjusted position by means of a clamping screw 12. In order to permit adjustment of the toplift guide toward or from the cutter in a plane transverseto the cutter laxis the bracket 8 is of the f provided with a slideway 13 to receive la dove-tailed slide 14 to which the guide 10 is secured. The slide 14 is adjustable by means of a screw 16 threaded in a projection 18 on the slide and j ournfal'ed in a plate 20 on the front ofthe bracket 8.v Turning of the screw thus serves to vary the positionof the slide 14 and consequently to adjust the toplift guide transversely of the cutter axis. In order to guard against accidei'ltalchange of adjustment through turning of the screw a spring 22 is arranged between the plate 20 and the slide 14 to increase the frictional resistance to turningof the screw.
The guide 10 is curved as usual to con-- form substantially to thevcurvature of the cutter. Positioned adjacent to the convex surface ofa the guide is a member 24 which serves as a tread rest for the toplift and in the construction illustrated is adjustable with reference to the guide 10 to vary the width lof the effective guiding surface of said guide. The rtread rest 24 is arranged forvadjustment 'on a line substantially parallel to the axis of the cutter, and in order to maintain .the same angular relation between this rest and the guide 10 in all positions of adjustment the rest is provided with a shank 26S-arranged to slide ina socket 28 formed in the member 14. In order to permit a quick adj ustment'to varythe'width of the guiding surface "of the'toplift guide for different shoes the shank'26 is lprovided with a'slot 80 in which is positioned a Tpin 32 mountedecoentrically on la spindle 434,

At the same time, moreover, the arrangement in- 24 and the guide 10 will be maintained in the same angular relation so that the width of the" guiding surface of the toplift guide will be uniform throughout its peripheral extent. In order to insurev against changes of adjustment through accidental displacement of the handle 38 the device includes also a set screw 40 which is arranged to bear upon the shank 26 and may be tightened t0 secure the'tread rest in adjusted position.
Having described the invention, what l claim as new and desire t0k secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a heel trimming machine, the combination with a heel trimming cutter, of shoe positioning means includinflV a guide for engaging the edge of the topzlift to determine the position of the heel with reference to the cutter, said positioning means having a portion arranged for substantially translational movement to adjust the width of the effective guiding surface of the toplift guide, and said parts being constructed 'and arranged to insure a substantially uniform width of said guiding surface throughout the peripheral extent of the topliftguide for any position of said adjustment.
2. In a heel trimming machine, the combination with a rotary cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel with reference to the cutter, a ltread rest for the heel, said toplift-guide and tread rest being relativelyadjustable to vary the width of the eective guiding surface of the toplift guide, and guiding means comprising parts arranged for relative translational movement in substantially parallel `relation to the axis of the cutter for maintaining the toplift guide and the tread rest in substantially the same angular relation in all positions of said adjustment.
8. In a heel trimming machine, the combination with a heel trimming cutter, of shoe positioningmeans including a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel with reference to the cutter, said ypositioning means `having a portion arranged for adjustment to vary the width of the effective guiding surface of the toplift guide, and unitary mechanism connected 4with said adjustable portion and movable `relatively-thereto for effecting said adjustment.

Inaheel trimming machine, the combination with arotarycutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge ofthe toplift` for positioning the heel with reference to the cutter, a tread rest for thefheel, said toplift guide andtread rest being relatively adjustableto vary the width of the effective guiding surface of the toplift guide, unitary meanseonnected withl oneof saidV parts and :arranged l to be readily manipulated by the operator for effecting a quick relative adjustment ofthe parts, and guiding means comprising portions relatively movable on a line substantially parallel tothe axis of the cutter for maintaining the toplift guide and the tread rest in substantially the same angular relation in all positions of said adjustment.

In a heel trimming machine, the combination With a heel trimming cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel with reference to the cutter, a tread rest adjust able With reference to said guide to vary the Width of the effective guiding surface of the guide, means independent of the tread rest and connected thereto for adjusting said rest, and means for maintaining the tread rest in the same angular relation to the guide in all positions of its adjustment.

In a heel trimming machine, the combination With a heel trimming cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel With re ference to the cutter, a tread rest adjustable With reference to said guideto vary the Width of the effective guiding surface of the guide, and means for adjusting the tread rest comprising a rotatable spindle having a pin mounted eccentrically thereon, said pin hav-A ing connection With said rest for effecting movement of the rest upon rotation of the spindle.
7. In a heel trimming machine, the combination with a rotary cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel With reference to the cutter, a tread rest adjustable With reference to said guide to vary the Width of the eiective guiding surface of the guide, said tread rest having a shank extending in substantially parallel relation to the axis of the cutter, means for guiding said shank to maintain the tread rest in substantially the same angular relation to the toplift guide in all positions of adjustment of said rest, said shank having a slot formed therein, and
a rotatable adjusting spindle having a pin mounted eccentrically thereon and engaging in said slot.

In a heel trimming machine, the combination with a rotary cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heel With reference to the cutter, a tread rest adjustable With reference to said guide to vary the Width of the effective guiding surface of the guide, a shank extending from the tread rest and having a slot formed therein, a rotatable adjusting spindle having a pin mounted eccentrically thereon and engaging in said slot, a handle for eecting rotation of the spindle to adjust the tread rest, and additional means for securing the tread rest in adjusted position.

In a heel trimming machine, the combination With a heel trimming cutter, of a guide arranged to be engaged by the edge of the toplift for positioning the heelV With reference to the cutter, a tread rest adjustable with reference to said guide to vary the Width of the effective guiding surface of the guide, said tread rest having a substantially straight shank, means for guiding said shank to maintain the tread rest in substantially the same angular relation to the toplift guide in all positions of adjustment of said rest, and means for engaging said shank to effect the adjustment of the rest.
