Be it known that I, HENRY G. Voler-IT, a citizen of the United States, residing in New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. Y Y
This invention relates to locks, Vand more particularly to master keyed pin tumbler `vide a cylinder lock inA which a rearwardly displaceable rollback isrdirectly carried by a tumbler controlled member, so that said rollback Yis locked against rearward displacement except when the said tumbler or tumblers are released by the insertion of a proper key. i..
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cylinder lock having a bodily displaceable rollback which is fiXed to the key plug at all times.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the particular formY shownfthe cylinder lock has the usual case 10, face plate or escutcheon 11, pin tumbler extension l2, and key plug or barrel 13. On the rear end of the key plug 13y is a dog cam or rollback 14, which preferably embraces an extension 13a on the rear end of the key plug, and is secured to the key plug by Ymeans ef screws 15. Surrounding the key plug is a sleeve 16 rotatable ecccntrically with respect to the key plug. Sectional pin tuniblers 17 of the usual type connect the key plug, sleeve and casing, the arrangementbeing such that one key is adapted to rotate the key plug individually, while another key rotates both the key plug and sleeve, as hereinafter described. In the particular form shown, the dog 14 rotates on the anis of the key plug when one 1;
key is used, and on the axis of theV sleeve (which is somewhat above that of the key plug) when another key is used.
In accordance with my invention, the roll :back 14 is rotatable in a predetermined plane manner, and in the particular example illus trated, the sleeve 16 is movable endwise of the casing 10 of the cylinder lock when a certain key is used. To permit this, the shoulder 18 at the forward end of the sleeve 16 operates in a somewhat wider rabbet 19 in the face plate ofthe lock, so that when the sleeve is released and turned by a key, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the sleeve may move rearwardly until the shoulder 18 takes up against a shoulder 9.0 on the casing. In other words, the shouldered portion of the casing at the face V,of the lock, which limits the endwise movement of the sleeve, is farther back than in ordinary locks so that the sleeve may have Van appreciable rearward movementz under certain circumstances, as shown in Figs. @and 7. In thijs operation, the sleeve is locked by the pin tumblers to the key plug so that the latter is likewise carried rearwardly together with the rollback 14, so that instead of rotating in the normal plane of rotation, the rollback is carried rearwardly and rotated in another plane. Before the sleeve is turned on its axis, it should be held against rearward movement by suitable means which relieves the pin tumblers of strain. To this end, I may attach to the rear of the cylinder lock a plate 21, which is secured to the upper portion of the cylinder by screws 22, and has a depending tongue or lip 23 abutting vagainst the rear face of a cam member 24 screwed or otherwise secured to the rear extremity of the sleeve 16. Then the parts 'are in the position shown in Fig. 6, the engagement between the lip 23 and the cam 24 will take up rearward thrust on the sleeve, and thereby relieve the tumblers of strain vand wear, but when the sleeve is turned the cam 24v will disengage the lip 23 and thereby permit the sleeve to be thrust rearwardly under the usual pressure on the key so that the rollback will be rearwardly displaced, as above explained. By preference, the cam 24 embraces the rear extremity .of the key plug and is screwed against the rear face of the sleeve, that part of the cam engaging the lip 23 being in the form of a radial projection which is rounded off at its rear face, as shown in Fig. 8, while the lip 23 is rounded off' at the front face thereof.
The operation of the lock will be obvious for the most part from the foregoing description. In Fig. 5, I have shown a key 25 inserted into the lock and turned through one hundred and eighty degrees. For purposes of description, this key 25 may be referred to as the change key. It racks the pin tumbler 17 in such a manner as to rotate the key plug independently of the -sleeve, which remains stationary, and therefore the rollback 14 rotates in its normal plane and on the axis of the key plug. The key 26, shown in Figs. 6 and 7, may be referred to as the emergency key, and it will be observed that this key racks the pin tumblers along the circumference of the sleeve and thereby releases the key plug and sleeve from the casing, so that said key plug and lsleeve rotate together on the axis of the sleeve. Supposing the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 6, rearward movement of the rollback 14 is at first prevented by the engagement of lip 23 with cam 24, as previously explained, but when the sleeve is turned n either direction, the projection 24 passes clear of the lip 23 and is then immediately moved rearwardly by the usual pressure of the hand of the person actuating the lock, so as to carry the rollback into the other plane hereinbefore mentioned. If, however, pressure onthe key is not sufficient to move the rollback to its rearmost position, this will be effected by the cam action of cam 24 on the casing of the cylinder lock which is cut away to present cam surfaces 27 adapted to be contacted by the cam 24, as the latter is rotated in one or the other direction, and to force the rollback in a rearward direction. The cam 24 rotates in contact with the rear face of the casing in the manner shown in Fig. 7, after it has been thrust rearwardly by one of the cam surfaces 27, or by pressure of the hand on the key, and therefore it will be understood that the cam or key thrusts back the rollback when said key has been turned to a very slight extent indeed, and that thereafter the rollback is prevented from moving out of the rearward plane into which it is shifted until the key is rotated through nearly three hundred and sixty degrees, or is turned back to the initial position. As the parts approach their initial position, the cam 24 strikes against the lip 23,' which is also in the nature of a cam, and said lip forces the cam forwardly again, so that when the tumblers are lined up for the removal of the key, the sleeve will occupy the normal position shown in Fig. 6.
In Fig. 9, I have shown a modification of the construction, in which the forward and rearward movement of the sleeve is controlled in a somewhat different manner. In this example, the circumference of the sleeve is provided intermediate of its length with a continuous cam groove 28 engaged by a pin 29 suitably anchored .in the `casing. The operation in this case is similar to that previously described except that endwise movement of the sleeve is positively controlled throughout the rotation of the sleeve by the engagement of the pin 29 with one or the other of the side edges of the cam groove 28, as will be understood. When the sleeve is turned from the position shown in Fig. 9, the pin 29 pushes the sleeve rearwardly by engaging the edge portion 30 of the cam groove, while when the sleeve is turned back to the initial position, the pin 29 pushes the sleeve forwardly by engaging the edge portion 31 of the groove.
My improvements are not limited to a cylinder lock having both a key plug and a sleeve, nor to a lock in which there is a single rollback, as distinguished from a multiplicity thereof, nor to a construction in which the rollback is fixed to a key plug, as distinguished from some other part of the lock. Various modifications of the construction may be adopted without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims.

In a. pin tumbler lock, a casing, a key plug, radial pin tumblers coperating with said casing and key plug, said key plug movable in an endwise direction, and a rollramas@ `back carried by and movable with said key key plug, two keys for said lock, said key` plug movable endwise by one key but immovable endwise by the other key, and a rollback Xed to said key plug at the rear of the lock and movable therewith; substantially as described.
3. In a pin tumbler lock, a casing, a key plug, a sleeve surrounding the key plug, and pin tumblers coperating with the key plug, casing and sleeve, said key plug and sleeve movable in an endwise direction; substantially as described.
4:. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a rollback, a carrying member for the rollback, pin tumblers for locking the rollback against rotation, a key for releasing the rollback, and a cam for thrusting said rollback rearwardly when it is turned; substantially as described.
5. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a rollback, a carrying member for said rollback, pin tumblers to lock the rollback against rotation, a plurality of keys, said rollback rotatable in one plane by one of said keys, and a cam for displacing said rollback in a rearward direction when another key is used; substantially as described.
6. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a rollback, a carrying member, to which said rollback is directly fixed, said carrying member mounted or forward and rearward movement relatively to the lock, a pin tumbler disposed transversely to said carrying member to lock it against forward and rearward movement, and a key to actuate said pin tumbler; substantially as described.
7. In a cylinder lock, a case, a key plug therein, a rollback operatively connected with the key plug, pin tumblers coperating with the key plug and case, and a key for releasing and rotating the key plug and rollback, said rollback being displaceable endwise of the lock during its rotation; substantially as described.
8. In a cylinder lock, a case, a key plug therein, a rollback operatively connected with the key plug, and means for displacing the rollback in a lengthwise direction relatively to the lock as said rollback is rotated; substantially as described.
9. In a cylinder lock, a rollback, a key for rotating said rollback in one plane, another key for rotating said rollback, and a cam for thrusting said rollback into another plane as it is rotated by said second key; substantially as described.
10. In a cylinder lock, a rollback, pin tumblers for locking said rollback against movement, a key for releasing said pin tumblers and rotating said rollback in a single plane,
and another key for releasing said pin tumblers and thrusting said rollback rearwardly into another plane when all of said pin tumblers are released; substantially as described.
11. In a cylinder lock, a rollback, a key for rotating said rollback in a predetermined plane, and a second key for commencing the rotation of said rollback in said plane, and then thrusting the rollback into another plane at a definite point in the rotation thereof; substantially as described.
12. In a cylinder lock, a rollback, a pin tumbler to lock the same against rotation, a key to release said pin tumbler and rotate said rollback, and a cam for thrusting said rollback in an endwise direction relatively to the cylinder lock at a definite point in the rotation of said rollback; substantially as described.
13. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a key plug, a sleeve surrounding the key plug, pin tumblers for locking the key plug to the sleeve and the sleeve to the casing, said sleeve movable endwise of the cylinder lock when released from the casing by the setting of said pin tumblers and arranged to carry the key plug therewith; substantially as described.
14. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a key plug, a sleeve, pin tumblers coperating with the casing, key plug and sleeve, and a cam device for displacing the sleeve in an endwise direction as the same is rotated; substantially as described.
15. In a cylinder lock, a casing, a key plug, a sleeve surrounding the key plug, pin tumblers, a key for rotating the key plug individually, and a key for rotating the sleeve with the key plug, said slee-ve when released from the casing by said pin tumblers being movable in an endwise direction; substantially as described.
