To'aZZ 'whom it may concern: I
Be it known -that I, An'rnrna GABFIELD TRIMBLE, a citizen'of the 'United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny andSt'ate ofPen-n'sylvania, have invented certain new "and use-' ful Improvements in Ornamental Pins or Badges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto an ornamental pin or badge employed asareward or merit emblem, and is designed'primarily for use where it is desired to recognize faithfulness of attendance or service of scholarsbr teachers at Sunday schools, educational institutions and also of employees in various commercial pursuits, or in any other connection wherein its use will be found applicable, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a merit or reward emblem which will eliminate the necessity of giving several independent emblems, to be attached together, as a further or additional reward or merit to the person entitled to the same.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an ornamental pin or badge constituting a merit emblem which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, conveniently set up, by its employment materially decreasing cost of use over the present type of merit emblems now employed, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ornamental pin or badge in accordance with this invention. 1
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a section on line III-III Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a vertical section on line IV-IV Fig. 6 of the bezel.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the pin or badge with the bezel attached.
Fig. 6 is affac e view'of the bezel. Fig. 7 1s a rear BlGV'tttlOll of the pin or badge illustrating the arrangement for fas tenirig thebezel.
Fig. S'is afront'elevation of the pi'nor badge 'withithe bezel "attached:
Briefly described the invention comprises a body rportion inthe form'ofan annulus having suspended therein a: pendant, the latter' indicating a certain: period of attendance,
service,-'position or class. By "Wayof exam ple, days, weeks, months or yearswhen indicating attendance orsr'vice, first place, "secondzplace, etc., when indicatiiig position in contests an first class, second class, etc., when indicating class. The pendant is detacha'b'le,sfothat it can be removed and pendantindicating greater merit or reward substituted therefor. By this arrangement it overcomes the employment in the merit emblem of bars or other devices which are successively connected together and arranged exteriorly of the bodyportion making the pin or badge eventually of great length and somewhat objectionableto wear. 1
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings 1. denotes a flat annulus having its inner edge formed with an eye 2, to which is detachably connected the merit or reward pendant 3. As illustrated the pendant is shown by way of example to indicate 10 provided with a transverse panel f, having an inscription to indicate years as at 5. Means are provided as at 6, for detachably connecting the body portion 1 to the garment of a person.
The inscription 5, indicating years, may be changed to days, weeks or months, or first place, second place, etc., or first class, second class, etc.
The annulus may be suitably colored to indicate a certain division or a class or provided with an inscription as at 7, to indicate the name of the Sunday or day school, employeI, college, order, society, etc., to which the in or badge belongs or is issued by.
T e pendants 3, which are to be suspended within the body portion 1, can run consecutively from one to one thousand, and which is provided with a panel 4: for the purpose heretofore referred to.
Associated with the body portion 1, as shown in Figs. l to 8, is an ornamental bezel 8, secured in position by the hold-fast devices 9. This bezel 8, may be constructed of plaingold, gold engraved, enameled .or set With jewels or stones, and said bezel 8, designates class and additional rewards when used by Sunday schools" in particular,
which is to indicate each five yearpe'riod up,
' scription associated with said designation.
2. A badge'coniprising a body portion in the form of an annulus having its inner edge provided with an eye and a pendant eonnectedto said eye and surrounded by the body portion; consisting of r a numerical designation and provided "witha transverse panel having conventional 'lnscrlptlon associatod with said designation, and a bezel inelosing the annulus and secured thereto.
3. A badge comprising a body portion, a pendant suspended within the body portion and consisting of a nurnericuhdesignation provided with a transverse panel having a conventional inscription associated with said designation.
