FUSE DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Our invention relates to improvements in fuse devices and more particularly to those of the character indicated in our copending application, Serial No. 824,412, tiled March 13th, 191-l.
One object oit' our invention is to provide a fuse support with a fusible link confined between two blocks under pressure, the channel between said blocks having one or more sharp reverse bends formed byfwhat may be termed baiile plates on said blocks which aid in extinguishing the arc that tends to form when the fuse blows.
Another object is to provide an improved fuse link having bends therein near the point where it is intended to fuse whereby the effeet of a magnetic blow-out is obtained to a certain extent.
A further object is to provide a way of protecting fuse links against corrosion and consequent change of rating from reduction of cross sectional area due to this action.
Other objects are to provide certain structural refinements which will be apparent without specific enumeration.
In the accompanying drawings, we have illustrated one embodiment of the invention.

The device consists of a socket member 1 and a plug member 2 which latter is pros vided with a handle 3 whereby it may be removed from or inserted into the socket member at will. The socket member is intended to be secured to a fixed support by means of screws passing through the apertures P-4.
The removable plug member carries on its upper side a block 5 of insulating material, porcelain for example. Said block has cemented or otherwise secured to its lower side, a plurality of smaller blocks G, 7 and 8 which match with an additional pair of blocks 9 1() similarly secured to the main body portion 2 of the plucr member. The blocks 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 may be made of limestone or silica, the upper and lower sets of blocks forming in effect, upper and lower compression blocks between which the fuse link 11 is confined. The meeting faces of said upper and lower blocks are so shaped as to provide, when spaced apart the thickness of the fuse link, a channel having a number of abrupt bends therein, portions of what may be termed the upper compression block, fitting into recesses in the lower compression block, and vice versa. These projecting portions may be termed baffle plates.
The blocks 2, 5, form compression members and the engaging limestone blocks 6, 8, 9, 10 form facing members for the compression members.
The fuse is compressed between the upper and lower compression blocks, the porcelain block 5 being drawn downwardly by a pair of springs 12, the enlarged ends of which it within suitable recesses 13 therein.
The plug member 2, exclusive of the shield 2l and handle 3 comprises a prismatic block generally parallelogrammatic in outline, of greater length from end to vend than from side to side. The distance from end to end is governed by the length of .the fuse required. The ends of the block are relatively narrow being only wide enough to provide proper terminals for the fuse 11. The fuse 11 extends from end to' end over the top ot' the block 2 in a substantially straight run. The sides ot the block are cut away at opposite extremities as shown in dotted lines in It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of Vthe invention.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a fuse device, a fuse, a pair of com- `.pression members lying upon opposite sides of the fuse, said members having a baille member of lrefractory material `at the central portion and having facing members for engaging opposite sides of the fuse, said facing members lying upon each side of the baffle member and comprising surfaces of refractory material for each o the compression members, and means for pressing the compression members toward each other so that the facing members press against opposite sides of the fuse.
2. In a fuse device, a plug member comprising an insulating body member and an outer insulating block member,a fuse having a reduced central portion lyin between said members and having termina portions extending beyond said members, a baille of refractory material l ing upon `one of said members substantial y centrally thereof, fac ings of refractory material secured upon the members and engaging opposite sides of the fuse on each side of the baille member, and means for pressing the facings against the fuse.
3. In a fuse device, a pair of insulating blocks, resilient means drawing said blocks toward eac other, a plurality of compression blocks vsecured to each of said first m'entioned blocks, said compression blocks forming engaging facings for the insulating blocks for engaging and crushing the fuse when the same is softened by melting, said compression blocks having intermediate their ends projections and recesses inter-tting with each other, a ,fuse having a central portion, said central portion passing over saidprojections and recesses and lyin between said facing members and terminals for clamping the ends of the fuse.

A fuse device comprising a plug member and a socket member, the latter having a pair of recesses for circuit terminals, said plug member being arranged to fit diagonally within said socket member and having a flange with projections at opposite ends to cover said recesses, said flange being generally oval in outline with its main axis arranged more nearly parallel to the axis of the socket member than the rest of the plug inem-ber.
5. In a fuse device, compression blocks having portions thereof in the form of interiitting baliie plates, a fusible link having a reduced central portion adapted to be blown, said reduced portion lying between the compression blocks and being bent back and forth between the baille plates, said fuse having terminal portions extending out beyond the compression blocks, said terminal portions being of relatively greater capacity, and terminal members for clamping the terminal portions of the fuse.
6. A metal fuse link having terminal portions adapted to be clamped to Suitable terminals, the portions adjacent the terminal portions being adapted to be exposed, said terminal portions and said adjacent portions being coated with a protective film over the ,metal of the fuse to preserve those parts from corrosion and to prevent changing of the capacity of the fuse.
7. In combination, a' fusible metal link, means covering the central portion of the link, said means being adapted to prevent arcing when the fuse blows, said fusible link having exposed ends, said exposed ends comprising terminal portions and a film of insulating material covering the metal of the exposed part of the link to prevent corrosion and consequent change of capacity of the fuse, and terminals for clamping the terminal portions of the link, the action of clamping the terminal .portion being adapted to break the film to expose the metal of the link under the terminal.
8. In combination, a fusible metal link, said link having a reduced cross section along its central portion to 'determine the.
location of blowing of the link, said link having exposed portions, said exposed portions 'comprising the terminal portions and a film of insulating material covering the metal of the exposed portions of the link to prevent the corrosion and so prevent changing the capacity of the fuse, and terminals for clamping the terminal portions of the links, the action of clamping the terminal portions being adapted to break the film to expose the metal of the link under the terminals.
9. The method of protecting the exposed,
ends of metallic fuses which consists in coating the exposed metallic end with a film of protective material to prevent corrosion and so prevent changing the capacity of the fuse, and then clamping the coated end in a suitable terminal with suflicient pressure to break the protective film under the clamping means and thus provide contact of the fuseto the terminals.
l0. In a fuse device, a socket member and a plug member, cooperating terminals on cent end to form a it'use terminal, and eachv clip having .an east` extending outwardly from the edge of the adjacent end to form a switch blade.
13. lln a `fuse device, a plug member comprising a prlsmatic block having side faces, a ituse member extending from end to end isevoae over the top of said block, the ends of said block being relatively narrow and having substantially parallel faces, and metal clips secured to the side faces of the block adjacent the end faces of the block, each of said clips having an ear extending over the adj aeent end to form a fuse terminal, and each clip having an ear extending diagonally at the edge ot the adjacent end to form a switch blade.
