STORM-WINDOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed .Tune 2, 1916. Serial No. 101,370.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Canaan, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Storm-Windows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to storm windows and more particularly to a type of storm window which may be connected with the window frameupon front platforms of motor cars, although the improved construction of the storm window enables it to be connected to other windows if desired.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a storm window of this character which embodies a construction whereby the window is not only rendered foldable but prevents rain or the like, from beating upon a sash comprising a part of the window when the sash is in either a vertical or inclined position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a window for the purpose stated wherein a hood comprising a part thereof is of novel construction.
A still further obj ect of the invention is to provide a storm window which not only embodies the above mentioned features, but includes a support for the hood which acts as a protecting cover therefor when the hood is not in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction 1s necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
Like characters of reference denote correspondin parts throughout the several views in the rawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a platform of a motor car showing the invention applied to the frame of a window therein.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view wherein the window is shown folded.
Fig. 4: is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates a portion of one end of a street car which is provided with the usual windows B tothe central one of which is shown applied a storm window C con structed in accordance with the invention.
The window C is foldable and includes a frame 5 having an open front and back. Each side and end of the frame 5 has formed therefrom a flange 6 which has formed there- 1n openings to permit the frame to be secured to the end of the car by suitable fastening elements such as screws or the like.
Arranged within the frame 5 is a foldablo hood 7 which includes a pair of bows 8 and 9, and a substantially U-shaped sash frame 10 with which and the frame 9 is connected a flexible covering 11 to which are also connected the bows 8 and 9 which serve as a su port therefor.
o permit the hood 7 to be folded and swung within the frame 5 when the hood is not in use I pivotally connect the arms 12 lof the bow 9 with the arms 13 of the bow 8 and form at the outer ends of the arms 13 eyes 14 through which are passed bearing studs on the side Walls of the frame 5. The studs 15 also pass through openings in offset portions at the outer end of the arms 16 of the sash frame 10. Foldable stretchers 17 are' connected pivotally with the sash frame 10 and with the frame of the central window B and these stretchers are intended to be employed to maintain the hood in eX- tended position as shown in Fig. 4 in the drawing.
A sash 18 is arranged within the sash frame 10 and has its top rail hingedly connected with the top of the frame 10 to permit the sash to be swung upwardly within the hood when the hood 1s extended. When the sash has been swung upwardly within the hood the sash may be held in such position by connecting the lower rail of the sash with the top of the center window in any suitable manner. The sash 18 is so connected with the frame 10 that when the hood is in extended position and the sash is in position to close the front of the hood the sash will be spaced a suflicient distance from the front of the hood to permit the sash frame prelilenting rain or the like beating upon the sas As clearly shown in Fig. 4 in the drawing the frame 5 will extend a considerable distance beyond the hood when the hood is folded and serves as a protective covering' for the hood and sash.
