CENTER ATTACHMENT ran cnams. v
To, allavkom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. PRYoR, a citizen, of the United States, residing at East Orange, inthe county of Essex and State Of New Jersey, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Center Attachments for Chains; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact .description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. a
The present invention has reference generally to jewelry, and the invention relates, more particularly, to improvements in u pocket-to-pocket vest watch chains, and
similar chain jewelry.
Theinvention has for its principal object to provide a center attachment for connecting the center of a chain to a vest or a other garment; and the invention has for a further object to provide a very simple and neat, and easily applied attachment means for connecting and retaining in position upon the vest or, other garment the suspended center of the chain as it extends from pocketfto pocket of the garment said attachment means also being of such a character that it easily lends itself to ornamentation by jewels or otherwise, so that aside 1 a from its utility characteristics it may be also used to enhance and beautify the appearance of the chain.
Other objects of the presentinvention, not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the following description of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated injthe accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1' is a face or front view of the lower portion of a vest or waistcoatshowing a pocket-to-pocketwatch chain arranged therewith, the same havin the novel center attachment means for hol ing the suspended center of the chain against the vest, and in its retained connection with the latter.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached face view of a pocket-to pocket vest chain (the ends thereof being broken away) provided with the novel center attachment device, made according to and embodying the principles of my present invention.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 18, 1918,
' Application filed March 1, 1917. Serial No. 151,680.
'Fig. 3 is a top edge view of the same, showing therelation, of said novel center attachmentdevice tothe marginal edge of thehvest when operatively connected therewit a.
Fig. 4 is a rear face view of the same, illustrating the back of said novel center attachment device.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the herein-above described views, to illustrate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a portion of a vest or waistcoat, provided with the laterally opposite pockets 2 in each front panel thereof. The reference character 3 indicates the marginal edge of the overlapping front panel of the vest, where the same overlaps and buttons upon the other panel of the vest.
The reference character 4 indicates a pocket-to-pocket Vestwatch chain, made up of interconnected links of any desirable shape or ornamental design. Chains of this character are sometimes known as Waldemar chains, and the same are adapted to be worn so as to extend between laterally opposite pockets of a vest or waistcoat. hese chains are provided on one end with a swivel snap (not shown) for attaching a watch at one end of the chain for insertion in one pocket, and are provided on the opposite end with a spring-ring (not shown) for attaching a knife, cigar-cutter or other article to said opposite end of the chain for insertion in the other pocket. As heretofore used these chains have not been provided with any form of attachment for securing the same to the vest or waistcoat, independently of the mere insertion of their ends in said laterally opposite pockets. Consequently these chains, and the articles connected to the end thereof are more readily surreptitiously removed from the person by pickpockets, and, furthermore, as the chain sags across the face of the vest it is very likely to swing away from the vest, when a person wearing the same leans over, so that it is likely to catch against adjacent stationary chains, which {secures 'thersameto ,the'mar a ginal edge 3 of the vest or'waistcoat without interrupting the neat continuity of eX- p ""inventior'iasto its application to pocket-topocket .v-est watch chains, it will be clearly apparent that'it'inay be applied with equal usefulness and ornamental value to other tension of the same from pocket to pocket.
Said center attachment device comprisesabody portion 5 of any desirable shape, size or design. each of its ends with perforated ears or e epieces 6. The intermediate'linksof thechain:
4 are attached, respectively, to said perforatedears or eye-piecesfi, so thatsaidbo'dy portion 5 is connected longitudinally between said links, so as to be positioned-substantially-in a central location between the ends of the chain 4, and thus said body-portion practically becomes in itself an interconnected link of the said chain-4. Connected with one end of said body portion 5, at the back thereof, so as to be permanentlysecuredtheretoas a part thereof, isa clasp member,-p'referably in the form of a longitud-inally extending or directed hook-portion'7, the freeend 8 of which doublesb'ack longitudinally across the back of said body portion 5, andspaced slightly therefrom. In using the center attachment/device, thus constructed, the chain 4 is -arranged in the usual manner upon the vest, so as to extend from pocket to pocket, and as thus posi tioned said body portion is positionedqnid- Way between said laterally opposite pockets and adjacent to the marginal edge-3 of the overlapping panel of the vest. When-thus positioned the free end 8 of the hook-portion 7 is pushed'over said marginal edge-3 of the vest, so that said edge 3 is embraced and pinched between the back of said'bodyportion 5 and said hook-portion-comprised in the parts 7 and 8.-- As thus arranged said center attachment device is firmlysecured to the vest with its body portion 5 exposed on the exterior side thereof in such a manner that the appearance of continuity of eX- tension of the chain from pocket to :pocket is not broken orinterrupted', andby this means not only is the chain attached to the vest and guarded against surreptitious re-' moval therefrom, but the center of the chain is retained against swinging away from the front of the "vest, and' 'is always maintained inneat and proper appearance.
The said body portion-5 providesyin addi-' tion to its utility features, an att-ra ctiv'e means for ornam'enting such chains since the outer face of said bodyportion5 maybe ornamented with jewels 9, as shown, or may Said body portionfi is provided at be? otherwise treated to secure anyiornamental efiect desired.
,While Iha ve particularly described my kinds of chains, such as lavallire'chai'ns, and
th-elike,consequently I do not limit my invention to the particular use, or with the particular type "of chain abovedescribed. 9 l -am 'also aware that some'cha'nges may be made in the several;arrangements and combinations of-the various devices and parts of mypresent invention,- as wel l as in the details of the 'constructio'n of the same;
Without departing "from the scope thereof as set forth in the foregoing specification, andf'as defined in the appended claim. Hence, I do not'limit myinvention :to the ex'actarrangements and combinations of the various ,parts'as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the: GOIlStIllCfiOlL'Of'StLld parts as shown inthe accompanying draw-- ugs; v I- 'I-olain1:'-" I -A pocketto-pocket vest watch'chain com-' prising a series of interconnected links a center attachment device" having an outwardly: presented face provided with orha: mental characteristics, an r eye-member connected with each end of said center attachment' device whereby the same may be con nected'in said chainby and between'a pair I of intermediate links thereof, and means=0n the back of said center attachment "device adapted to" engageand clasp the same t0 the marginal edge of the overlapping panel of a vest with which said ch'ain is Worn,- the same comprising iayhook-Portion: secured to and extendingl'outwardly from the'back of setforth above I'have hereunto set'my hand this 26th dayo'f Febr-uary, 1917 N i P JNO.
