This invention relates to an improvement in garments, more particularly however, to the seams thereof, it havin primarily'to do with the shoulder seams of ltted wear, the
object of the invention being to providean improved garment seam, which willmaterially prevent the sagging of the garment at the shoulder seams, and which will also permit in certain cases the use of a veryli ht fabric for uniting the heavier fabric of the garment, an ob]ect of the present invention being the provision of an nnproved garment in which the s aced edges of the garment seam are united y str1ps, one overlying and the other underlapping such spaced edges and so connected therewith that the raw edges of the flat strips are covered whereby a. more desirable lapped seam is obtained than heretofore. In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification,
igure 1 illustrates this improved seam applied to the shoulders of a knitted garment; Fig. 2is an enlarged detail view illustrating this improved seam; Fig. 3 is across sectional view taken online 3-3 Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
This improved seam'sstructure comprises in the present instance an overlapping strip 2 and an underlapping strip 3 secured by suitable stitches to the spaced edges 4 of the garment, which in the present instance is shown as a knitted undershirt 5, the strips rection of the Wale-thereof, it is desirable.
agd fact as; timefs nficessary to connect'tillie a ommg' es 0 t e arment especia y at the shoulder seams, wl th the wales of the 4 stfritgs at right angles to the wales or stitches e body of the garment, thereby to pre- "of a thinner material than that of which the garment is formed, while at the same time materially reinforcing the garment at the seam where the strips are applied, and therefore the improvement may be used with advantage at other places in a garment, as,
for instance, down the legs of certain styles and materials of underwear.
I claim as my invention:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having spaced edges at its seam,'an
overlapping strip and an underlappin strip secured along their edges to the spacef edges of the garment seam, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater elasticity transverse to the greater elasticity of the garment.
2. As a new article of manufacture,- a garment having wales and spaced edges at its seam, and an overlapping strip and. an
under-lapping strip also having wales and secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam and unstitched together between their stitched edges, the wales of the strips extending transversely of the wales of the garment.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a
garment having spaced edges at its seam,
and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment, the strips being of a different grade of material than the ma? 'terlal of the garment, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater. elasticity transverse to *the greater elasticity of the garment.
.4. As a new article of manufacture, a.
seam, the wales of the strips extending trans the wales of the garment, the
versely of v strips being of a different grade of material than the material of the garment.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a knitted garment having wales and spaced edges at its seam, and an overlapping knitted strip and an underlapping'knitted strip stitched along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam, the wales of the strips extending transversely of the wales of the garment, the strips being of a diiferent grade of material than the material of the garment, and the stitches connecting the strips with the garment covering the raw edges of both strips.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having spaced edges at its seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam, the strips being of a lighter weight of material than that of the garment, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater elastlcity transverse to the greater elasticity of the garment.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the seam, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater elasticity transverse to the greater elasticity of the garment.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a
garment having spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam, each of said strips being of a diiferent grade of material than that of the garment, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater elasticity transverse to the greater elasticity of the garment.
9. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges-of the garment seam, each of said strips being of a lighter weight of material than. that'of the garment, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction than in another, the strips having their greater elasticity transverseto the greater elasticity of the garment.
10. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having wales and spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip also having wales and secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam and unstitched together between their stitched edges, the wales of the strips running transversely to the wales of the garment.
' 11. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having wales and spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam and also having wales, the wales of the strips running transversely to the wales of the garment and each of the strips being of a different grade of material than that of the garment.
12. As a new article of manufacture, a garment having wales and spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping strip and an underlapping strip secured along their edges to the spaced edges of the garment seam and also having Wales, the wales of the strips running lengthwise to the wales of the garment and each of the strips being of a lighter weight of material than that of the garment. p g 13. Asanew article ofmanufacture, aknitted garment having Wales and spaced edges at its shoulder seam, and an overlapping knitted strip and an underlapping knitted strip stitched along their edges to the spaced edges of the knitted garment seam and also having wales, the wales of the strips runring transversely to the wales of the garment, each of the strips being of a difi'erent grade of material than that of the garment, and the edges of the strips being covered by the stitches uniting the strips with the garment.
14.. As a new article of manufacture, a garment havingspaced edges at its shoulder seam, and a strip extending lengthwise of such seam with its edges entirely beyond the spaced edges of the garment seam and stitched flat. thereupon with the raw edges of the strip covered by such stitches, both the garment and the strip having greater elasticity in one direction than in the other, the strip having its greater elasticity transverse to the greater elasticity of the gargarment an di stitched thereupon withthe raw edges of the strips covered by the stitches, both the garment and the strips having greater elasticity in one direction; than in another, the strips having their greater elasticity transverse tothe greater elasticity of the garment. s v 1 16. As a new arti 1e of manufacture, a garment having spaced edges'at its seam, a pair of strips extending lengthwise of the garment seam, one inside and the other out side of such spaced edges with their edges.
extending beyond the spaced of the garment seam and stitched flat thereupon with the raw edges of the strips covered. by the stitches,.said strips being unstitched together between their stitched edges, both the garment and thesstrips having greater elas- 'ticity in one direction Ithanin another, the {strips having their greater elasticity trans-,
