.the pawl 18 is formed with a reduced cylindrical shank or stem 20. The shank 12 is internally screw threaded adjacent the outer extremity of the recess 17 and fitted into the said recess is an externally screw threaded plug 21 having an axial opening 22 formed therethrough slidably receiving the free extremity of the shank of the pawl 18 for supporting the pawl for move ment longitudinally within the recess 17.
Interposed between the plug 21 and the body of the pawl, is a helical spring 23 arranged to surround the shank 20 of the pawl and normally urging the pawl to active position with the tooth 19 arranged to cooperate with the rack 15 upon the shank 14 of the jaw 13. In this connection, it is to be observed that the plug 21 is, at its outer extremity formed with spaced sockets for receiving a spanner tool so that the plug may be adjusted longitudinally within the shank 12 for tensioning the spring 23.
Formed through the body of the pawl 18' is a diametric slot 24 having a beveled or ticularly shown in Figs. 4 and 6, slidably fitted through a suitable opening in the lower side of the shank 12. Formed through the upper extremity of the body of the slide, adjacent its forward edge, is a longitudinally extending slot 29 and fitted through the shank 12 to project freely through the said slot, is a transversely extending pin 30 connecting the slide with the said shank with the slide movable transversely through the shank. The body of the slide is, adjacent its lower extremity, formed'with an inner beveled edge or cam face 31 upon the rear side thereof, arranged for engagement, as particularly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, with the beveled or inclined inner end wall 25 of the slot 24 through the pawl 18. Consequently, when the slide 26 is moved downwardly through the shank 12,- the cam face 31 of the slide will act against the inclined end wall 25 of the slot for retracting the pawl against the tension of the spring '23 and withdrawing the tooth 19 from engagement with the rack 15 of the shank 14 of the jaw 13. This jaw will then be permitted to drop or move away from the main jaw 10. Upon the release of the slide, the spring 23 will, of course, immediately act upon the pawl to engage the pawl with the shank of the pawl'so that the said jaw may be 100- the said j awfor-holding the jaw at adjustment with respect to the main jaw, the slide 30 being again forced upwardly, as will be readily understood, "upon the outward movement of the pawl under the influence iof the said spring. In this connection, it should be noted that the tension of the spring 23 will be suflicient to overcome the weight of the jaw 13 upon the tooth 19 of sitioned against the jaw 10, as illustrated-in Fig. 4, and held in such position by the said pawl. i J
' Arranged to cooperate with the main jaw 10 is a lever or handle32 formed, at its" inner extremity, with a reduced extension" 33 threaded into the outer internally threaded extremity ofthe shank 12 of the I said jaw. The handle may thus be easily disconnected from the jaw 10 and is preferably milled adjacent its outer extremity,- as particularly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so 7 that the handle may be readilygrasped.
Slidab1y fitted upon the handle is a fulcrum or sleeve 33 provided at one side with a set screw 34 for holding the sleeve at adjustment longitudinally of the handle.
Formedon the sleeve, is a, hook .35 and de-"v tachably' connected to the said hook, is'one end of a chain or other suitable flexible element'36. Detachably connected to the opposite extremity of the said chain, is a hook 37 providing a suspension device for thefulcrum sleeve of the handle adjustably connected with the said sleeve by the chain 36.
In order that-the operation'of my im-' proved valve spring lifter may; be accurately understood, '1 have, in F igs. 1 and 2 of the drawings,-shown the device incon nection with an intake valveof a 'conventional type of internal combustion engine. One of the cylinders of the engineis shown at 38 and projecting downwardly through the overhanging portion of this cylinder. is a valve stem 39, with'which isarranged to cooperate a push rod 40 mounted in the usual guide 41. Surrounding the valve stem is a valve spring 42 which, at its lower extremity, is received [by a collar 43. Formed through the valve stem, adjacent its lower extremity, is an opening 44 adapted to receive a pin for retaining the spring upon the valve stem.
The present invention is, as previously 1 intimated, designed to provide a device for compressing the spring 42 so that the said in may be readilyplaced in or removed rom the opening 44 in the valve stem. In using the device, the hook '37 is first en: gaged over the head of the cylinder 38 or is engaged with some other suitable portion of the engine above the valve when the chain 36 is adjusted to support the handle 32 an upwardly inclined position with the main jaw 10 ofthe' device engaging o n the .YelYe tem .3? beneath the a 4.3, the supporting jaw *13 being seated vice thus attacheditlie outer extremi y-b the handleBQ ma be" for lifting the valve spring42, as'il lujstrated in Fig; 2.' Uponfthe' l'ifting' of the "said spring, the slide26lis then actuated to re lease the jaw 13 when this" will drbp to engage around the guide 41 of th'epush rod with the pawl 18 coactiiw withthe'fratchet upon the shank t-er, the said aw rgr holding the jaw at adjustment with" respect to the main j aw 10 w support thefsaifd spring in elevated position. NVith the 20 spring thus elevated, theretaining pin for the spring maybe readily fitted through or displaced from the opening" 44 I in the valve stein for either connecting'the spring with the valve ii detaching the spring-therefrom. In like manner, any other "conventional anchor or retainer for the spring 'mayi'be attached to .or .detached" froin*-th:e "'valve stem. "Since, as illustrated in Fig. '2',the-
