To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that l, Emvnnn HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monmouth, in the county of Warren and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in devices for grinding disks and is more particularly intended for grinding disks and colters used in cultivators. lts purpose is to provide an implement of simple construction which is adapted to hold the disk to be sharpened so that it may be rought into contact with the grinding stone to secure the desired character of sharpening. rllhe particular novel advantages of my device are the possibility of presenting any and all portions of the surface of the disk to the grinding wheel secured by the novel form of suspension provi-ded for my device and the added feature of securing by a novel form of brake any desired degree of friction between the disk and the grinding wheel. These novel results are secured by the simple manipulation of the device by the operator at the time of the sharpening operae tion. rThe specific embodiment of my invention and its operation are clearly set forth in the details of construction hereinafter pointed out.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top-plan view of the device.
F 2 is a side view of the device.
Fig. 3 isa transverse sectional vie-w `on the line 33, Fig. 2.
In the drawings:
The arms l, 1, provided with the handles 1, 1a, are relatively disposed at an acute angle forming a mitered joint at which they are bolted by the transverse bolts 2, 2. An eyebolt 3 is located adjacent one of the transverse bolts 2, having fastened thereto a coil spring 4 which is attached to a suspended rod 5 adapted to be hung from the ceiling, to support the device. Located at points substantially midway of the arms 1, 1, are the transverse bolts 6, 6 adapted to inclose the block 7 holding same in rigid position between the arms 1, 1. A vertical transverse bore 8 is provided in the block 7 within which is located a bushing 9. A revoluble shaft 10 is contained within said bushing 9, and provided at its lower end with a reduced threaded portion 11 adapted to receive ,thereon e Cap mit 1 2, to
lof the shaft 10 is so designed that the disk 17 to be sharpened by the device may be placed thereon, the squared portion 1A pass lng through and filling the usual square ori iice provided in such disks, the ldisk 17 being seated upon the disk 16. Fastened to one of the arms 1, by means `of a pivotal bolt 18, is a band 19 which is provided with a semi-circular bend 20 adapted to partially surround the drum 13, and, provided further with an eye 21, at its end opposite the pivot bolt 18, to which eye 21 is attached a rod 22,
14 is adapted to fastened to a handle 23 pivotally attached to arm 1. Extending from the lmiteredjoint of the arms 1, 1 to a point beneath the periphery of the disk 17, there is 'provided a shield 2A adapted to cover the upper faces and sides of the arms 1, 1. The device is so disposed as to bring the inner face 17 of the disk 17, when the same is placed upon the device, at a point adjacent the lower face of the grinder wheel A mounted upon the revolving shaft A in any ordinary way.
lt is apparent from the details of construction here'in'before pointed out that the operator, desiringto sharpen the disk 17, may adjust the device by graspingl handles la, 1a, to move the arms 1, 1 so as to present any and all points upon the inner face 17 of the disk 17 to the grinder wheel A to sharpen the disk 17. The disk 17 seated upon the disk 16 is held against relative rotation by the squared portion 14 fitting in the squared orice of the disk 17. When the inner face 17 of the disk 17 is brought into contact with the grinder wheel A, rotar motion will be imparted to the disk 17 and the grinding operation will not be accomplished until the operator, by moving the handle 23, the rod 22 and the band 19 brings the brake band 20 into contact with the brake drum 13, thereby retarding the rotation of the shaft 10, plate 15 and disks 16 and 17. Thus it is apparent that the `operen tor, by the manipulation of the handle 23, can control the amount of friction exerted between the inner surface 17 of the disk 17 and the grinder wheel A. Manipulation of the arms 1, 1 permits contact between the grinder wheel A and any and all portions of the inner surface 17 of the disk 17. The guard plate 211 is provided to secure the outer ends of the arms 1, 1 against damage from sparks caused by the contact of the metal disk 17 with the grinder wheel A.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination, in a disk grinder, of resilient suspension means secured to a single fixed point; supporting means detachably related to said suspension means; a revoluble member applied to the supporting means; carryin means mounted upon. said revoluble mem er and adapted to receive a` disk thereon; means for the adjustment of the supporting means adapted to bring the disk into contact with a grinding means; and means for controlling the revolution of the revoluble member.
2. The combination, in a disk grinder, of resilient suspension means secured to a single xed point; supporting means detachably related to said suspension means; a
revoluble member applied to the supporting means; carrying means removably mounted uponsaid revoluble member and adapted to receive a disk thereon; means for the manual operation of the supporting means adapted to bring the disk into contact with a grinding means; and means for controlling the revolution of the revoluble member.
3. The combination, in a disk grinder, of a suspended rod; a frame, attached to said rod, comprising two arms secured to a block provided With a transverse bore; a shaft loosely journaled in said bore and adapted to rotate therein; a saucer-shaped disk mounted upon said shaft for rotation therewith and adapted to receive thereon the disk to be ground; hand grips provided on the arms for the manual operation of the frame adapted to bring the disk into contact with a grinding wheel; a brake-drum upon the shaft; a brake-band adj acent thereto; a rod connected with the brakeband; and a handle mounted upon one of the hand grips and connected with said rod.
Ll. The combination, in a disk grinder, of a suspended rod; a helical expansion spring depending from said rod; a frame attached to said spring, comprising two arms secured to a block provided with a transverse bore; a shaft loosely journaled in said bore and adapted to rotate therein; a saucer-shaped disk mounted upon said shaft for rotation therewith and adapted to receive thereon the disk to be ground; hand grips provided on the arms for the manual operation of the frame adapted to bring the disk into contact with a grinding wheel; a brake-drinn upon the shaft; a brake-band adjacent thereto; a rod connected with the brakeband; and a handle mounted upon one of the hand grips and connected with said rod.
5. The combination, in a disk grinder. of a suspended rod; a frame, attached to said rod, comprising two arms secured to a block provided with a transverse bore; a shaft loosely journaled in said bore and adapted to rotate therein, and provided with a square upper portion; a saucer-shaped disk adapted to receive thereon the disk to be ground and provided with a square ceutral orifice adapted to receive the square portion of the shaft there through to seat said disk in fixed relation to the shaft; hand grips provided on the arms for the manual operation of the frame adapted to bring the disk into contact with a grinding wheel; a brake-drum upon the shaft; a brake-baud adjacent thereto; a rod connected with the brake-band; and a handle mounted upon oneof the hand grips and connected with said rod.
ln testimony whereof l allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
