No throwing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Cameron ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclain'in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Polyacid-of- Manganese-Dioxid Depolarizers, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to a depolarizing agent or galvanic cell of the lleclanche type, especially miniature dry batteries such as are commonly employed in pocket flash lights, etc., and relates particularly to the use of polymanganic acid as a depolarizing body, alone, or in conjunction with manganese dioxid, or other higher oxid of manganese depolarizing material and with or without graphite or other species of carbon.
lit has been proposed to use manganites as depolarizing agents but these have the disadvantage of containing in many cases an insumcient amount of available oxygen and a body more closely approximating the formula Mull, than that furnished by a manganite is desired. llt has also been proposed to employ a product quite did'erent from manganites, namely; certain polymanganites, which while chemically difiering from said manganites are not acceptable for all purposes. Further, it. has been proposed to use an acid manganous polymanganite as a depolarizing agent.
A. disadvantage arising from the use of highly acid manganites or of what may be termed manganous acid, and certain bodies of a related character is that in some cases or under some conditions components of an acid nature, tending to induce local action appear and the zinc electrode of the battery is attacked on standing for a longer or shorter period, depending on the degree of activity of such acid components. The neutralization of the aforesaid manganous acid with bases yields a product more nearly free from this objection but having other disadvantages one of which is the reduced amount of available oxygen over that obtained in pure Ninth.
Manganous manganite having the formula MnUMnU, (correspondingto the formula Mn Q, or manganese sesquioxid) contains, as is evident, less'oxygen than Mull Specification of Letters Patent.

tent available for depolarizing purposes,
that is obtainable from pure MnU llhe -nous acid has advantages over the latter as a depolarizing agent.
Poflymanganous acid may be prepared from one of its salts by acid treatment to remove all or substantially all of the basic matter combined therewith, and may be combined in the form of a brown to black powder which may be incorporated with graphite and molded into the form oi? a depolarizing mass. Likewise, it may be combined with other forms of manganese di- OXlCl or with such bodies as the manganites or other depolarizing material of a different chemical character, according to the conditions of its use or the requirements of the trade.
l Vhile l have mentioned illustratively polymanganous acid as typifying the present invention, it should be understood that l embrace herein the various poly acids of manganese dioxid or similar cyclic or other form of the manganese dioxid radical in poly or plural grouping yielding an acid complex. This application does not, however, include manganous polymanganate or acid manganous polymanganitc such as the octa-polymanganite compound described by Kaplan (U. S. Patents 1,109,129 and 1,166,414) but does embrace the free acid liberated from such compounds on removal of the base by a stronger acid.
hat ll claim is:
'1. A galvanic cell containing free polymanganous acid substantially free from salts of polymanganous acid in the depolarizing mass.
2. A galvanic cell of the Leclanche type containing tree polymanganous acid substantially free from salts of polymanga nous acid as a depolarizing agent and being substantially free from deleterious local .action 3. A. galvanic cell comprising a carbon and zinc electrode and comprising polyman- 'ganousacid substantially free from salts till Ill
till
of polymanganous acid as a depolarizing agent. the latter being without substantially any local action on said zinc electrode.
4. A galvanic cell having a depolarizing agent consisting substantially of polymanganous acid substantially free from salts of polymanganous acid.
5. A galvanic wll of the Leclanche type having a depolarizing agent consisting substantially of a poly acid of manganese dioxid substantially free from salts of polymanganous acid.
iaaaeie 6. A galvanic cell having a depolarizing agent consisting substantially of an acid washed free poly acid of manganese dioxid substantially free from salts of polymanganous acid.
7. A depolarizing agent consisting sub stantially of a free poly acid of manganese dioxid substantially free from salts of polymanganous acid.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
CARLETON ELLIS.
