To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, Amman E. PLAU- SOHINAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Guns, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to guns and more particularly to a spring pistol, the primary object of the invention being to provide a small pistol for shooting small lead shot or the like similar to those employed in the ordinary air rifle.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a spring gun of this character that may be simple loading and be.easily actuated by the operator to operate the reloading mechanism after each actuation of the projecting mechanism.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a spring gun which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring to the drawing wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the details of which embody the preferred form, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the general contour of the device is designed to simulate the ordinary pistol and includes the barrel 1, the upper portion of which is provided with a partition 2 and provide a shot chamber 3 within which the small lead shot 4: is stored. Below the partition 2 and extending longitudinally through the barrel is the discharge sleeve 5 the central bore of which guides the shot when it is ejected. This sleeve may be of hardened material properly ground and bored to assure the proper trajectory'for the shot when the device is discharged. 'At the butt 6 T have provided a longitudinal passage Way 7 in longitudinal alinement with the sleeve 5 and in communication with a relatively large cylindrical space 8 arranged beneath the rear portion of the chamber 3 'and within which a coil expansion spring 9 is arranged. An ejecting rod 10 is pro vided and has its ends mounted in the sleeve 5 and passage way 7, the forward end of the rod forming a plunger 11 while the opposite end provides a guide 12. This rod carries an abutment element 13 from which depends a projection 14 having a notch 15 formed therein. The body 16 of the spring gun is enlarged to include the trigger mechanism and a trigger guard 17 dependsfrom this portion of the body. The side walls of the body are provided with longitudinal slots 18 and each slot receives one end of a guide pin 19 carrying a lever 20 and acting aS a support for one end of the same. The forward end of this lever is extended upwardly at an angle to form a finger 21 having a notch adapted to receive the end of the flange 14. A portion of the lever 20 rearwardly of the pin 19 is bifurcated, and the terminals of this bifurcated portion are received on the pin 22 carried by the reduced end 23 of the handle or grip 24:. This handle or grip 21 is mounted on a pivot pin 25 carried by cars 26 which are formed at opposite sides of the body beneath the butt end of the gun. The space within the body permits the end 23 of the handle to freely swing when the latter is thrust forwardly on the pivot pin 25 and by this action the finger 21 is drawn inwardly and, by. virtue of its engagement with flange 11 on the abutment 13 will draw the plunger 11 to its innermost position. A coil spring 27 within the handle or hand grip urges the handle back to normal position after this action so that the finger 21 is immediately extended forwardly to be in position for the next loading operation.
Mounted in the body near the end of the inward path of movement of the abutment 13 is a latch lever 28 one end of which is provided with a lock 29 to be received in the notch 15 when the abutment member 13 is drawn inwardly. The opposite end of this latch lever 28 is joined by a connecting ring 30 to the arm 31 of the trigger 32. And it will be observed that when the trigger is pulled the lock 29 will be pulled out of the abutment member forwardly with considerable force to actuate the plunger 11 which (ill) will discharge the shot from the sleeve.
The bottom of the shot chamber 3 is inclined as shown in Fig. 1 and an opening 33 is provided at the lowermost plane which extends through the partition and alines with an opening in the sleeve to permit the shot to drop into the sleeve. For preventing the shot from dropping out of the sleeve before the ejecting mechanism is released, I have provided a retaining element 34 which includes the flat spring 35 having one end fixed to the body and the opposite end grooved to provide an arcuate finger 36 adapted to project through the slot in the bottom of the sleeve at a point slightly in advance of the opening through which the shot drops.
A sight member 37 is mounted upon the top of the barrel at the rear thereof and covers an opening 38 through which shot may be supplied to the chamber 3. The sight member is adapted to cover the opening when the chamber has been supplied and may cooperate with the front sight in the usual manner when aiming the gun.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable spring gun has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood, however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Claims:
1. A pistol comprising abody, ejecting means including a plunger mounted for sliding movement in the body, a hand grip pivotally mounted on the body and provided with a reduced end pro ecting into the body, a lever having one end engageable with the said plunger, and its op osite end attached to the said reduced end 0 the hand grip, means supporting the lever forsliding movement through the body when the said handle is actuated on its pivot, and means mounted in the body to releasably hold the plunger in retracted position.
2. A pistol comprising a body, ejecting means mounted in the body, and including a plunger having an enlarged portion forming an abutment element movable with the plunger, a hand grip pivotally mounted in the body, and having one end projected thereinto, means slidably mounted within the body and connected to the said hand grip and adapted for engagement with the said abutment when the said hand grip is actuated, and means mounted in the body to releasably engage the abutment for releasably holding the said plunger in retracted position.
3. A pistol comprising a body, and a pivoted hand grip at one end of the body, an ejecting mechanism, means connected to the said hand grip and engageable with the said mechanism to retract the ejector when the hand grip is swung on its pivot in one direction, an abutment included in the said mechanism and provided with a notch, a latch provided with a lug for reception in the said notch, and means to manually actuate the said latch the body including ears to which the said handle is pivoted and a tensioning element adapted to withdraw the hand grip back to normal position after being swung in one direction on its pivot.
4. A gun comprising a body having a plunger mounted therein, spring means engageable with the plunger to normally urge it to forwardly projected position, and means mounted within the body and engageable with the plunger to move the latter to retracted position, the said means including a hand grip pivotally mounted on the said body, the said body having longitudinal slots formed in opposite sides thereof, and a lever included in the said means and slidably mounted in the said slot and connected to the said handle for movement in the said body when the handle is swung on its pivot.
