PATENT OFFIQE.
NORMAN EV. CUMMIN S, OF BRIDGEPOIRT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR I0 THE BASSIGK CO., OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
LUBRICATOR.
Application filed February 5, 1918. Serial No. 215,474.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nomi'ANlV. CUMMINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairtield,
and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and .usetul improvements in a lubricacor for hollow bolt and it has for its primary object to provide a reinforcing plug for sheet metal closure caps which will present a solid head for driving purposes and'thus prevent the closure cap from becoming crushed.
Further, the invention resides in the features of construction hereinafter specifically pointed out and succinctly claimed, referencc being had to the accompanying drawing \vherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a bolt and the lubricator applied thereto;
Fig. 2 i a transverse section thereofon line 22 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the lubricator per 86, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a slightly modified construction. I
Relating more in detail to the drawing, the sheet. metal cap comprises a sleeve-like body 1 closed at its outer end by walls 2 and having its inner end inturned and contracted about the bolt. 3 to provide a shoulder -i between which and a shoulder 5 is confined a coiled spring 6 for urging the cup onto the bolt. The later is formed with a longitudinal bore 7 from which leads a lateral oil duct 8 which iwrmally closed by the closure cap.
A solid tapering arranged within the cap 'lh its lair side contacting the ccm iaratively frail and wall 2 to reinforce the same so that when the plug is driven into the bore T of the bolt, said plug will present a solid head for receiving the hammer blow and consequent relieve the end wall 2 from the force of the blows and 'tl'iereby eliminate crushii'igor disfiguring the same. The plug 9 is to .ied with a peripheral flange that extends beyond the periphe y of i bolt to form the shoulder 5.
' is illustrated. a further Specification of Letters Patent.
embodiment of the invention in which the peripheral flange or head 10 of the tapered plug 9 is driven against a ring or washer 11 so that: the latter constitutes one of the confining shoulders for the coiled spring,
In either form, the device is preferably assembled as a unit, such as is indicated in Fig. 3, and marketed in this manner it being noted that the spring serves to retain the plug in the cap. In mounting the device, the small end of the plug is inserted in the bore of the bolt or the like, and forceful blows applied to the end wall 2 to drive the plug firmly to position. The lateral oil duct will then be covered by the cap body, in which connection it. will be noted that there are no other oil holes, and that the pllilg is solid thus greatly reinforcing the b0 t. i
The meritorious structure thus provided is simple in construction and easily assembled, and since the force of the hammer is taken up by the solid plug the cap will not collapse as would be the case should the plug be made from sheet metal and in hollow forinf The plug will never become lost when oil" the belt for the coiled spring firmly holds the same against the end walls.
What is claimed is- 1. A lubricator for hollow bolts, comprising a cap body closed at one end and opened at its opposite end, the opened end being inturned to form a shoulder, a solid tapered plug arranged within the cap body and having a liead seating against the closed end thereof, and a coiled spring confined between the head of the plug and the shoulder of the cap body.
2. A lubricator for hollow bolts having a lateral .oil duct, comprising a sleeve-like body for covering the oil duct, said body closed at one end by an end wall and having its opposite end opened, means for reinforcing the end wall and securing the body to the bolt, and means for yieldably urging'the body onto the bolt.
3. A lubricator for hollow bolts, compris ing a cap body closed at one end and having its opposite end opened, a reinforcing and securing plug arranged within the cap. and means for holding the plug in position.
4:. A lubricator for hollow bolts, comprising a cap body closed at one end and having its opposite end opened, a cap-reinforcing plug disposed therein loosely against the closed end of the cup and having ills inner end prepared for being driven into the holloe bolt, and means for yielclably securing the plug in position.
5. A lubrioacor for hollow bolts, comprising a cap hotly closed at; one end and having its opposite end opened, said opened end portion being provided With a shoulder, e headed tapered plug freely disposed in the body for reinforcing the closed end thereof and for being driven into a hollow bolt, uncle resilient element interposed between the head and the shoulder.
3. A luhricator for hollow bolts, comprising a cap body closed at one end and having its opposite and opened, said opened end portion being provided with a shoulder, 2L
and for being driven into a hollow bolt, at 20 Washer engaged with a head and forming a shoulder opposing the first shoulder, and a spring confined between the shoulders.
in iestnnony whereof I alhx my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
