HOWARD 'I. WARE, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application filed May 17, 1917. Serial No. 169,243.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD T. WARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable props or supports which are especially useful in erecting forms for concrete construction or in scaffolding or in other analogous uses. The object 01" the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of such a support and to provide in connection with other essential features an improved and simplified clamp.
The advantages and characteristics of the invention will be sufliciently pointed out hereafter in connection with a detailed description of the accompanying drawing, which shows one physical embodiment of the invention. After considering this it will be evident to persons skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in other forms, and I do not limit myself to details except as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a prop embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation;
Fig. 4 is a top plan of one of the clamp elements;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 6 is an end elevation.
The support or prop is generally to be used in a substantially vertical position, and for convenience words used herein to indicate relative positions of parts will be used with reference to the normally vertical position of the prop; but it will be understood that these words are used only for identification and not as limitations, and that the prop may be used in any position if conditions are suitable for such use.
The prop has a main upright A, at each side of which is placed another upright D. The two uprights D are connected at the bottom by transverse pieces E which embrace the main upright. The uprights D are thus located close to the main upright A but slidable in relation thereto. At the top of the adjustable uprights D is located a cross piece I" suitably secured by diagonal braces G.
A clamp is provided, comprising two main members B. Each of these has a box-like portion H adapted to fit between the up rights D. Clamping aws I extend at each side from the central part of each clamping member. These jaw extensions have flanges K to overlap the outer edges of the uprights D. Each of the jaw members is also provided with clamping teeth or ridges L adapted to bite into the front and rear faces of the uprights D. The clamping members are also provided with holes M through which a bolt 0 passes, and a wing-nut or other suitable nut C is provided to draw the clamping'members together.
When the prop is set up for use the central portions H of the clamp members rest upon the top of the'upright A, as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. When the nut G is loose the adjustable upper portion of the prop is raised until it is in the proper position with reference to the thing to be supported, and then the clamps are tightened y setting up the nut C, whereupon the clamping jaws L firmly engage the sides of upright members D and hold the entire structure in its adjusted position.
I claim:
1. In an adjustable prop or the like, the combination of two relatively movable members, one of which comprises two uprights slidably arranged at opposite sides of the other member, means connecting said uprights to move together, and a clamp adapted to rest against the end of the; central member and having means to engage opposite sides of each of said uprights, to hold the two members in adjusted position.
2. The same as claim 1 with the addition that the clamp comprises two members each having central portions adapted to rest upon one of the prop members and each having lateral extensions provided with clamping ridges to bite the edges of the two uprights, the clamp also comprising a bolt and nut for drawing the two members together.
HOWARD T. WARE.
