Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, ERNEST J. STRINGES, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and .State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in rails.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of railsso. asto render them capable of supporting wheels of a train thereon and prevent the wheels from shiftinglaterally on the balls ofthe rails should the flanges of the wheels beco mebroken or otherwise injured.
A further object of this invention is'to provide the rails with flanges on the outer side which prevent lateral shifting of'the car wheels on the balls of the railsand also provide the balls of the r-ails with a water course which will drain the water from the rails.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a rail of this character, which Will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one thatcan be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims hereto appended.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawlng, the numerals 5 and 6 designate the ends of a pair of abutting rail sections. The rail sectlons are pro vided with a base flange 7 having formed integrally with the upper face thereof a vertical web 8 which has formed on its upper edge the usual ball 9. The outer edge of theball or head 9 has formed integrally therewith and rising upwardly therefrom a flange 10 which flange extends above the plane of the upper surface of the ball or head of the rail 9.
Theball or head 9 ofthe rail isprovided adjacent its outer edge with a longitudinally extending groove 11 constituting a .WQJJQI' course or drain whereby the {water may drain from the head or ball ofthe rail into the vertical passages'or openings 12 formed in the ball or head 9, as illustrated in 'F i'g. 1 of the drawings.
Each rail section has its adjacent ends provided on the under side thereof with'the depending flanges 13. The flanges 13 ,depend from and are-formed integrally with the under side of the ball 9, and are bent angularly inward to-providet'he supporting or attaching, members 14. The flanges and attaching members being formed of a single piece of metal and formed integrally with the base and ballof the rail constit-ute retaining means for the locking 15. Upstanding flanges 16ja13e formed integrally with the upper side of the base'at the ends,
thereof and are in direct alinement with t he flanges 13. The upper edges of the flanges 16 are bent inwardly toward each other and provide the retaining or supporting flanges 17 it being understood that the flanges l4 and 17 are arranged in close proximity to the web 8 of the rail sections.
The locking plate 15 above mentioned comprises a rectangular body 18 having its upper and lower longitudinal edges bent angularly or at right angles thereto to provide the flanges 19. The medial portion of the body 18 is provided centrally with a longitudinally extending reinforcing rib 20, which rib is located between the flanges 19 and the outer edges of the flanges 19 extend beyond the plane of the outer edge of the rib 20. The flanges 19 are provided with alined openings 21 which are adapted to register with the openings in the supporting flanges 14 and 17 respectively so that when the plate is fitted against the web of the rail and the flanges of the plate are engaged under the flanges 14 and 17 respectively they may be fastened thereto through the medium of the bolts or screws 22 which extend through the openings in the supporting flanges 14C and 17 and are fitted in the openings 21 of the locking plate 15.
In use, the rails are moved into engagement with each other and the flanges 13 and 16 respectively at the adjacent ends of the rails are in alinenient with one another. The plates are then forced in so that the flanges 19 engage beyond the flanges 14 and 17 respectively. The bolts 22 are then extended through the flanges 14 and 17 arranged in the openings 21 of the flanges 19 of the plates 15 and thus the plates are connected to the rail sections 5 and 6 and by the virtue of this connection the rail sections are held against longitudinal displacement in relation to each other.
What is claimed is 1. A rail having a flange formed integrally with its outer side, said flange extending upwardly beyond the upper surface of the ball of the rail, and the ball being provided with a longitudinally extends ing groove which is adjacent to the flange and the bottom wall of the groove provided with a drain opening, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A rail comprising a base flange, a web, and a ball, said ball provided on its outer edge with an upstanding integral flange, the upper edge of which is in a plane above the upper surface of the ball thereof, said ball provided in its upper side with a longitudinally extending groove which is adjacent to said flange and having openings therein whereby the water may drain from the groove, for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with a pair of rail sections, each section having an upstanding integral flange formed on the outer edge thereof and extending above the upper surface of the ball thereof, of retaining flanges carried by the ball, and base flange of each rail section, and a retaining plate slidably fitted in the flanges of the rail sections, means extending through the retaining plates and the flanges of the rail sections to retain the rails connected together.
4. The combination with a pair of rail sections, each including a base, web and head, each head provided on its outer longitudinal edge with an upstanding right angularly related flange in a plane above the upper surface of the head thereof, of flanges formed integrally with the under side of the head and the upper side of the base at a distance from the web, the edge of each flange bent angularly in the direction of the web to form retaining or supporting members, a locking plate, flanges formed integrally with the locking plate, the flanges of the locking plate adapted to engage the supporting flanges of the base and head of the rail sections, means extending through the flanges of the rail and plate to retain the rails in connection.
