ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1918.
. Application filed August a, 1917. Serial No. 185,180.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that we, BIRGER LJUNG- srnoar and Fnnnnrx LJUNcs'rRoM, subjects of the King of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic-Fluid In the accompanying drawing which is illustrative of our invention, Figure 1 is a view illustrating the structure of the blade and blade-carrying member before they are fastened together, Fig. 2' shows the blade mounted on the blade-carrying member; Fig. 3 is a side'view of a portion of a blade-carrying member withblades' mounted thereon, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing, 5 indicates a rotor or blade-carrying member which may take the form of a disk, drum, or ring, for example, and 6 indicates blades mounted thereon. The member 5 is provided with shoulders 7 and a rim 8 upon opposite sides-- of which are formed concentric ridges or projections 9 which are undercut more or less So that they slope or incline toward the center of the member 5. The amount which they are unilercut is exaggerated in the drawings for the purpose of illustration. Between the ridges 9 are concentric grooves 10 which also incline toward the center of member 5. The bases of the buckets are U- shaped, having legs 11 which straddle the rim 8. The inner sides of the legs 11 are formed with ridges 12 and groovesl3 which are complementar "to ooves l0 and ridges 9 on rim 8, and s ope 1n the opposite direction.
In assembling the blades on the rim, the bucket base is .put over the rim with one leg on each side, as shown in Fig. 1, after which the two legs are pressed together toward the rim, thus bringing the ridges and grooves thereon into lockin engagement, as shown in Fig. 2. For this pressing together a heavy pressure is required and the blade base is displaced radially outward away for the shoulders 7, which obviously will leave a small space between the bottom of the legs 11 and the surfaces of the shoulders 7. To secure a firm and reliable connection this space is filled up so as to prevent the blades from becoming loose. This is preferably done by upsetting the bottoms of the legs 11, as the portions thereof indicated at 14, Fig. 1. After the upsetting operation the appearance is as shown in Fig. 2. Other means for'fillin such space may be employed, however. or example, the shoulders 7 may be'upset, or the space filled in by some other means.
By the above described arrangement,- the use of a filling slot is avoided and a solid ring of -equally spaced blades results. The
assembling of the blades on the blade-carrying member, is also much simplified. At
the same time, the blades are very firmly fixed in position.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, We have described the principle of operation of our invention, together with the apparatus which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but we desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 7
1. In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination of a blade-carrying member having a rim provided with projections and grooves which slope toward the center of said member, and blades having U-shaped bases which fit over. said rim and have complementary projections and grooves sloping away from the center of said member, said projections and grooves on the rim and blade bases interlocking to fasten the blades to the rim.
2. In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination of a blade-carrying member having a rim, and shoulders at the base of the rim, said rim being provided with projections and grooves which slopc toward the center of said member, blades havin U-shaped bases which fit over said rim and have complementary projections and grooves slopin away from the center of said member, said projections and grooves on the rim and blade bases interlocking to fasten the blades to the rim, and means for filling up the spaces leftbetween said shoulders and the radially inner ends of the blade bases.
3. In an elastic fiuid turbine, the combination of a blade carrying member having a rim, and shoulders at the base of the rim, said rim being provided with projections and grooves which slope toward the center of said member, and blades having U- shaped bases which fit over said rim and have complementary projections in the meats-i grooves sloping away from the center of said members, said projections and grooves on the rim and blade bases interlocking to fasten the bladesto the rim, the radially inner ends of the blade bases being upset against said shoulders to fill the space left between such blade base ends and said shoulders to hold the blades securely in position.
In witness whereofi, we have hereunto set our hands this 22nd day of June, 1917.
