Be it known that I, BURTON C. CooNs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paring- Machines, of which the following is a specication.

The present invention relates to paring machines and more particularly to the type in which the article to be pared is supported on a rotary fork or other device and is acted upon by a knife which travels in a curved path while the fork is turning so that all portions of the article are caused to be operated upon by the knife, a machine of this kind being disclosed in my prior Patent #1,168,788, dated January 18, 1916.

In the use of such machine it has been found that the knife becomes clogged by parings and stems due to the collection of the latter in the narrow space or throat be tween the blade and the guard and as a consequence the action of the knife becomes defective and does not properly pare the apples. Another` disadvantage of previous knives is that the discharged parings in their fall are not controlled and asa con* sequence it is impossible to maintain them separated from the pared apples.

This invention has for an object to provide a construction in which the paring and the stems will not clog the knife, thus insuring a more perfect paring action. Another object of the inventionV is to provide a knife that will direct the parings downwardly so that they will be discharged to one side of the point of discharge of the lapples or other pared articles.

To these and other ends, the invention consists of parts. and combinations of parts, all of which 'will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the draw* which are known in this art. The knife is y supported by a stein 3 which is moved in any suitable Ina-nner to carry the knife in a curved path, as for instance in the man ner shown in my prior patent previously mentioned.

The knife comprises a blade 4, and a guard 5 arranged in slightly spaced relation to the blade and at a slight angle to the latter, both of said elements being sup` ported by a head 6 which forms the feature of this invention. This head is so formed that a passageway is provided at one side through which stems and parings may pass from one end of the blade.

In this embodiment of the invention, tnis head comprises a blade supporting portion 7 and a guard supporting portion 8 connected together at one end in spaced relation by an end wall 9 and unconnected at their other ends. The side wall 9 extends rearwardly from both the blade supporting portion an d the guard supporting portion, and a deflector 10 extends rearwardly and downwardly from the guard supporting portion to point below the throat between the blade supporting portion and the guard supporting portion, said defiector 10 having one side ljoining with the side wall 9 and its other side converging toward said side wall. A strengthening rib 1l may be provided along the lower edge of the blade supporting pon tion 7, this rib converging toward the free end of the blade supporting portion and hav ing its other end connected to the side wall 9. The form and the arrangement of the deiiector 10, the side wall 9, and the blade supporting wall 8 are such that a chute is provided which discharges the parings downwardly. This chute opens laterally so that parings and stems will not collect therein or in the space between the knife and the guard. Although the blade support is only supported at one end it connects with the end wall 9 in such a manner that great strength is secured.

The passageway for the parings and stems is preferably provided on that side of the knife which coperates with the inner end of the fork 1. as the stem end of the apple is usually placed on the fork first, leaving the blossom end at the outer end of the fork.

It is also preferred to notch or recess the blade i at the side having the passageway and project the notched end of the-blade' beyond the blade support. This permits the blade to snugly fit about the fork Withits upper edge substantiallypin line with the uppermost line of the fork.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :n

2. 3.
