To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, HENRY 0. Omar, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Sollihbridge, in the'county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lmprovements n ophthalmic mountings and has particular reference to an improved constructlon of reinforced bridging member or the like.
One of the leading objects of the present invention is the provision of a novel and improved construction of bridging member which shall be reinforced at the parts subjected to greatest wear in a new and 1mproved manner.
A further object of the present inventlon is the provision of an improved simpllfied construction of reinforced bridging member in which the reinforcing portion may be secured Without the use of solder or the like, if desired, and at the same time firmly retained in position.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following speclfication taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modificatlons 1n the specific. details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the lens receiving frames adapted to hold in position the usual ophthalmic lenses 2, said rames being connected as by the bridging member 3; this bridging member, as will be best understood by reference to Fig. II, comprises a central arched ortion terminating in the reverse forwardly bent end portions 4:, thus providing the elbows or bends 5 which rest against the sides of the nose and which project inwardly from the plane of the lens, thus tending to rub against the eyeglass case or the like when the mounting is removed from the face of the wearer, these bends 5 consequently being subjected to the greatest wear of any portion of the mounting.
It is, therefore, the essential purpose of my invention to provide an improved construction of bridge in which these bends shall be suitably reinforced with an extra heavy coat of gold or other precious metal over the base metal core in case of filled stock, so that the mounting will not wear out at this particular point in advance of the remainder thereof, but will give constant and satisfacto service to its owner.
One form 0 accomplishing this result I have illustrated in Figs. III, IV and V, in which I have shown my bridging member comprising the central base metal core 6 incased by the precious metal shell 7 and as having formed near its end portion the grooves 8 preferably having the lateral shoulders 9 forming the limit for the grooves. Said grooves are adapted to receive the wound precious metal wire or cable 10 shaped into the form of a sleeve embracing the smaller ortion 8 of the bridge blank and filling in t e space between the shoulders 9.
The parts havin been thus assembled as illustrated in Fig. F, it is merely necessary to suitably swage or reduce the entire composite blank, when the sleeve 10 will become flattened and molded to tightly wedge into and make a smooth and imperceptible joint with the shoulders 9 and to firmly and securely engage and unite with the remainder of the blank while providing the reinforcement at the point where the blank is adapted to be later bent, as illustrated in Fig. II.
In Fig. VI, I have shown a slight modification of my invention, in which the sleeve, preferably formed from the wound cable, is fitted over the blank without the formation of the reduced part 8 and shoulders 9 and the entire blank is then swaged or reduced to a uniform diameter, when the precious metal member 10 will be found to be firmly embedded in and formingJ substantially a unitary part of the bridge lank roper and will be in position to provide t e desired reinforcement.
I claim:
1. A bridge for an ophthalmic mounting, comprising a central filled member having an annular groove formed therein near each end thereof, and a reinforcement formed by winding a precious metal cable within the groove and ex anded in lace as by swaging, whereby a uniform surface with embedded precious metal reinforcement is provided.
2. An ophthalmic mounting comprising a filled inetal base portion having an annular groove formed therein near each end thereof, and sleeves formed from spirally wound Wire arranged within said grooves and connected to the base portion by pressing of the material of the sleeves into the filled base to cause the sleeves to bite into the base and form a substantially smooth joint therewith,
substantially as illustrated.
3. A bridge for an ophthahnic mounting,
messes formed of a base metal core covered by a precious metal shell, said bridge having reinforced bends formed therein near the ends thereof and having the material at the adj acent bends swaged to form reduced portions or annular grooves without breaking of the precious metal incasin shell, and precious metal reinforcements for the bends in the form of a spirally Wound sleeve fitted within the annular groove and swaged into position to make a substantially smooth flush joint with the surface of the material binding the groove, substantially as illustrated.
4. A blank for an ophthalmic mounting, formed from base metal incased with a precious metal shell, said blank having portions reduced in diameter to form annular grooves, and having the grooves reinforced by inserted sleeves sWaged to make flush joints with the walls at each end of the grooves without appreciably altering the size or shape of the blank itself.
