Description
, I JOSEPH DAVIES Improvement in RotaryPud dIin'g-Furna es.
gttumgfi.
Patented UNITED STATES JOSEPH DAVIES, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY PUDDLlNG-FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,937, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification describin-ganew and Improved Puddling-Furnace, invented by JosEPH DA- VIES, of Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee.
The invention will first be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full un- "derstandin g thereof, and then clearly pointed another opening, D, on the other side discharging into the flue E, which leads to the chimney F. Now I propose to arrange a flat puddling-table, G, upon one part of the interior wall of this puddling-furnace, as shown, with a hole, H, through the side of the cylinder, arranged in such relation to the table as to allow of balling the metal on it in small balls adapted to be worked into blooms in the squeezer at one operation, the same as it is bailed in the stationary furnace, and I provide a passage, K, through the flue E for removing the balls. Both holes will be provided with competent stoppers M L. The one L for the hole H will be a hollow, casting with a firebrick lining and will be fastened in by a rod,
N, passing through staples in the side of the cylinder and in it, or in any equivalent manner. This stopper may be pried out with a bar, readily. The stopper M may consist of a sliding or hinged door or the like. 0 represents holes for ventilating the space below the floor, to prevent the accumulation of gas therein, and P is a hole for tapping the cinder. a.
The flue is made in two parts and hinged together near the chimney, as at Q, while the end next to the furnace is to be suspended by a chain, which is itself to be suspended from a circular track on which it moves forward and back as the flue is swung away fromor back to the furnace.
A hollow ring, It, of metal, surrounds the opening into the fine, where the latter fits up against the side of the discharge-openings of said furnace, and a circulation of water is maintained in it to protect it from the intense heat to which it is subject.
The opening H may be placed on either side of the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The revolving puddling-furnace A, having a flat puddling-table or bottom, G, and a hole, H, through the side for balling the metal, substantially as specified.
2. The ventilating-holes O to the space below the floor, substantially as specified.
I JOSEPH DAVIES.
