Description
S. H. BAILEY.
improvement in Draught Attachment to Plow.
Patented May 21,1872.
UNITED STATES SYLVESTER H. DAILEY, OF OLGOTT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAFT ATTACHMENTS TO PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,934, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification describing an Improved Draft Attachment to Plows, invented by SYLvEs'rER H. DAILEY, of Olcott, in the county of Niagara and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of 1 my improved draft attachment, the line 0 c,
Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line k h, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new draft attachment to plows; and consists in the application to the draft-rod of a guide-wheel which is self-locking, and serves in place of a clevis, and to regulate the depth and width of furrows turned by the plow.
A in the drawing represents the end of the plow-beam. To the same is pivoted a draftpin,-B, from which a strap, (3, is suspended. The upper end of the strap 0 is bifurcated, and embraces the pin B at two places near both ends, as shown. D is the draft-strap, carrying the whiffletree or its equivalent at the front end. The strap D consists of two longitudinalplates, a a, connected by four transverse pieces, I), d, e, and f, through all of which the pin B passes, as shown. A spring, 9, embraces the pin B between the transverse pieces 01 and '0, bearing against d, and a pin, h,o f A, and tending to crowd the latter forward. Between the pieces I; and d projects from B a small pin, 0', against which, when draft is applied to D, a notch in b is drawn to lock'the pin B, and prevent it from turning. When draft is applied to the strap 1), the suspended strap O, part of which is between 0 and f, is also drawn forward, so that its notched back sleeve is drawn against a pin, 1, projecting from B. This locks the strap G in a vertical position, which is requisite to enable the Wheel F to properly peform its functions. When turning around corners or short about, the strap (3 is unlocked by action of the spring, so that the wheel F interposes no obstacle to the operation by reason of its rigid connection with the plow-beam. To the slotted lower part of O is, by means of a bolt, m, attached an extension piece, E, in which the arbor n of a wheel, F, is held.
This wheel is thus locked vertical by the draft, can be set to suitable depth, and thereby regulates the position of the plowshare.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pin B, straps O D, and spring 9, all combined with each other, and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
SYLVESTER H. BAILEY.
