Specification of Letters Patent.
lt atented June 41; it ill is,
Application filed April 18, 1917. Esefial No. 162,875,
The invention relates to improvements in cr er heads.
is a well known fact among Wood Workmennilscturers that solid cutter heads especially when Working hard and my Wood and when good Work and high d desired, This is because the cutis at such an angle that it screpes cuts; but solid cutters ere exand ere only useful for the one purwhich they are made, and when re ularly they do not lest long and. n tlle cutting edge is worn out the whole f must be discarded. the oh" the present invention is to a, practical end ethcient cut durable compare tively inenpen e construction adapted to so "posse s all the advantages oi? e solid cutter heed cnpe ble of enabling the cutter to be readily removed and quickly replaced for purposes and also for enabling various has of cutters to he used on. one

.In the accompanying drawing, in which is' illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the cutter head minimises in its construction a solid central body 1 having peripheral faces 2 arranged concentric with a central opening 3 for the reception of the shaft or arbor of a wood Working machine The solid body portion 1, which is relatively thick and which may be constructed of any. suit-able nuiteriah is provided If intervals with peripheral recesset in the cutter sill)- porting faces :2 to provide clearance for toe cuttings.
The solid body portion 1 of the cutter head receives it series of cutters 5 having curved inner faces 6 arranged concentric with the body portion of the cutter head and fitting the peripheral faces 2 thereof and secured on the same by means of side plates or sections 7. The cutter supporting body 1 is provided at its side faces with annular recesses 8 which space the outer portions of the side plates 7 from the body 1, and the said outer portions of the side plates are provided with annular grooves 9 having,
tions of side plates and the outer por-.
tions the body 1. The bottom or inner walls o1 the grooves 9 are spaced from the inner faces-of the ribsor laterally project-- ing portions 10 of the cutters to provide intervening spaces 12, Which enable the side plates, by being drawn together, to also drew the cutters tightly against the peripheral faces of the body whereby the cutters Will be rigidly held in proper position for accurate cutting. The outer face of the cutter' is eccentric to provide the necessary clearance and the cutter is provided With & front cutting edge 13. The cutters illustrated in the drawings are designed for use on glue jointers but the cutter head may be used on she-pers, inolders and various other 'Wood Working machines and may be inside sired contiguretion produce the n" issery out. portion of the cutters and thereby possesses all the strength required of a sohd cutter head and will enable the cutter head to be operated at the desired speed. The knlves or cutters, by being arranged upon the solid concentric peripheral portion of the body,
will always be in proper position with the cutting edge always at the same radius, pro vided the cutters or knives are properly dressed and sharpened. The cutter head is adapted to be manufactured as cheaply as a square cutter head and it will do the work of a solid cutter head and will enable the knives or cutters to. be rapidly changed when desired.
The side plates are also provided with peripheral recesses conforming to the configuration of the recesses of'the central body portion of the cutter hea-il.
What is claimed is: I 1. A cutter head of the classdescribed including a solid centra body portion provided with peripheral cutter receiving faces arranged concentric with the axis of the cutter head, knives or cutters arranged upon the peripheral faces of the said'body and being of. substantially uniform Width with the same, said knives or cutters having laterally projecting ribs or portions extending beyond the side faces of the said central body portion of the cutter head and providedwith outer faces arranged at an angle or inclination to the axis of the cutter head,
and annular side plates adjustably secured to the body portion of the cutter head and provided with grooves having inclined outer walls fitting the ribs or pro ecting portions of the knives or cutters, said grooves being also provided with inner walls spaced from the ribs or projecting portions to enable the side plates to draw the knives or cutterstion of the cutter head and provided with outer faces arranged at an angle or inclination to the axis of the cutter head, and an: nular side plates adjustably secured to the body portion of-the cutter head and provided with grooves having inclined outer Walls fitting the ribs or projecting portions of the knives or cutters, said grooves being also provided with inner walls spaced from the ribs or proje'cting portions toenable the side plates to draw the knives or cutters inward radially of the cutter head to clamp the knives or cutters tightly against the body portion of the cutter head, said cutter head being provided with outer sideshallow recesses or grooves spacing the outer portions of the side plates from the central body portion. 0
