HERBERT GLEN mWINrOF SPUR, TEXAS.
van'nn-nnnnerznn 'Maxam-Bansin eraan-rana.
To all whomeu 'may concern:
Be it knownvthat l, HEnBnR'rG. lnwIN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Spur, inthe county of Dickens and etat/e of Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vacuum-Energized Make-and-Break Spark-Plugs; and heV does hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and tion, -such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichpit appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ignition apparatus for 1nternal combustion engines and consists essentially in the provision of a vacuum operated make and break ignition device.
The invention consists further in the provision of an apparatus of this nature designed or use in igniting gasolene distillate benzol and various iquid hy iro-carbonated fuels having high boiling points.
The invention consists further in the provision of a combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accom anying drawings and then spe/cicall efined in the appended claims,
y invention is illustrated in the accompanyfing drawings, which with the letters of reterence marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure l' is la sectional view through a vacuum operated make land break spark plug.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing parte in plan view.
Fig. 3 isa bottom view points.
Reference now being` hadv to the details of the drawings by numerals:`
1 desimates a plug, preferably of cylindrical s ape, provided" with' a ange and made of any suitable material and adapted to hold a lubricant. Mounted within the plug is a guide member 'l' longitudinally apertured and in which an oscillating electrede 3 is mounted. Tubes, designated by numerals 5 and 6, of any suitable non-conducting or insulating material, are mounted of the contact Speciication of Lettera atent. appncanonmea July ae, 1917. serial no. masas.
exact 4description of the inven' way in ignition devices.
device of this nature having` nection on each.
' chanical connections yt'rode 3 to contact with the within the plug and within theftube 6 is mounted a stationary electrode tube, the upper end of whichis threaded and carries a binding nut 11. A spring 10 is fastened at one end to the guide'member other end is fastened to an arm 8 having an angular outlined opening receiving a snnularly shaped portion at the-upper end of the." electrode 3. Saidarm is pivotally connected to a link 14: which is fastened to the diaphragm 13, which is mounted with- 1n the casing 4.- having anv opening therein in which one endort the llexible pipe 15 is fastened and in turn is adapted to be connected'tc theldistributer or timing device,
not shown. A. suitable housing, or casing 9 incloses the electrode and the working parts of the device.
7 and its v till . The vacuum operated spark plug is adapted to be placed within the cylinder of a mctor. A. vacuum in the Iintake pie or inanifold is conducted through the exible to each plug by wagt7 of a distributer or timing device mechanically driven in the usual. A wire cable is ada vted to connect all of the stationary electro es together by way .of .a terminal constationary electrode. An electric current may pass down said cable and through the electrode points on en gine whenever said electrodepoints come together. Y
In operation the vacuum 'from the intake manifold acts uponthe diaphra causing the latter t0 move inward and y the medescribed with the oscillating electrode, the latter -is rocked, which will cause the angled end 'of the elecrojecting end of the stationary electrode, t us forming a circuit for an electric current. "When the vacuum is released b the distributer pr timing device the said spring l() acting against it, the diaphragm will return the latter to its normal position and the electrodes will separate breaking contact and in the event of' the electric current flowing through the points at the time would cause an electric arc between the points, producing the desired ignition. 4
While l have shown and described a particular form of mechanical apparatus, illustratingr the operationoi my invention, it will be understood that the construction ol' the tube' same may vary as to details in different Ways ,Without in any way departing from the spirit f the invention.
What I claim to be never is:
1. A. vacuum energized make and break ignition device, comprising a cylindrical hollow plug, a stationary electrode mounted in suitable insulation, and an oscillating electrode suitably mounted within the plug, a vacuum actuated diaphragm, connections to cause the electrodes to contact with each other, a spring fastened to the oscillating electrode and adapted to return the same to its normal position.
2. A vacuum energized make and break ignition device, comprising a cylindrical hollow plug, a stationary electrode mounted in suitable insulation, and an oscillating electrode suitably mounted Within the plug, a vacuum actuated diaphragm, a link connected to the diaphragm, an arm movable with the oscillating electrode and pivotally connected to said link, a spring fastened at one end to said arm and its other end held stationary, as set forth. f
A vacuum energized make and break ignition device, comprising a hollow cylindrical plugr with openings in the bottom thereof, an insulating member mounted.
Within the plug, a stationary electrode mounted in said tube and passing through one of the apertures in the plug, an oscillating electrode, and guide Within the plug in which the same is mounted, said oscillating electrode having a laterally projecting portion, an arm fixed to said oscillating electrode, a spring fastened at one 'end to said arm and its other end to said guide, al
vacuum casing, a diaphragm mounted therein, and a link fastened to said diaphragm and having a pivotal connectionI to said arm, a flexible tube fastened in an opening in the casing, as set forth. y
4:. A vacuum energized make andi break ignition device, comprising a hollow cylindrical plug with openings in the bottom thereof, an insulating member mounted Within the plug, a stationary electrode mounted in said tube and passing through one of the apertures in the plug, an oscillating electrode, vand guide Within thevplug in whichthe same is mounted, said oscillating electrode having a laterally projecting portion, "an arm ,fixed to said oscillating electrode, a spring fastened at one end to said arm and its other end to said guide, a vacuum casing, a diaphragm mounted liti therein, and a link fastened to said diapln'agm and having a pivotal connection to said arm, a flexible tube, fastened in an opening in the casing, and. a housing fitted over the electrodes and through which the stationary electrode passes, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto an my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
