OPERATING MECHANISM FOR CHURNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTO E. Porter, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Carrollton, in the county of Muhlenberg and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in churns and more particularly to the dasher operating mechanism.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a device which will transmit rotary power to the dasher and cause the same to rotate rapidly in the opposite direction.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a dasher operating mechanism which is particularly simple in construction and will not readily get out of order.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of dasher in which the efiiciency of the same is materally increased.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device which is readily attachable to the ordinary churn without in any way changing the construction thereof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a churn operating mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention showing portions broken away to more clearly illustrate the details of construction, and 1 Fig. 2 is a sectional view 011 line 22 of *ig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the churn top havin formed centrally therein an opening 2. This opening 2 is for the reception of the dasher which will be more fully hereinafter described. Secured at diametrically opposite points to the top 1 are the plates 3 which extend beyond the periphery of the top and are formed with the hooks 4: having the downwardly extending arms 5 formed at the free ends thereof. A suitable thumb screw 6 extends through each of the arms 5 and said thumb screw is adapted to frictionally engage the outer wall of the churn to firmly hold the device in place.
Secured to the upper side of the top 1 is a suitable frame 7 consisting of a pair of legs and an upstanding stem 8 which projects upwardly therefrom and in parallel relation to the axis of the opening 2. This frame 7 is positioned slightly to the side of the opening so .as to properly position the churn dasher socket which, will be more fully hereinafter described. Suitable arms 9 are formed on thestandard 8 and carry at their outer endsthe sleeves 10 in which the shaft of the churn dasher socket is rota- I tably mounted. The upper end ofthe standard 8 is provided with a cylindrical portion forming bearings for'the gear wheel, while a suitable bolt 11 extends laterally from the frame 7 at the point where the arms join to support the oscillating gear.
The oscillating gear above referred to consists of the curved rack bar 12 provided with the inwardly extending arms 13 which terminate in a hub 14. Secured to the centermost arm 13 is an actuating lever 15 terminating in the handle portion 16 by which the gear is swung on its pivot. This gear is pivotally mounted centrally to the bolt 11 and the teeth of the rack bar 12 mesh with the pinion 17 having formed integrally therewith the gear 18 which gear and pinion are rotatably mounted on the cylindrical extension of the standard 8. The shaft of the churn dasher socket is designated by the numeral 19 and carries at its upper end a pinion 20 which meshes with the gear 18 and the lower end of said shaft carries the socket 21 for the reception of the upper end of the churn dasher as clearly shown in Fig. 1. It will thus be seen that upon operation of the handle 16 the gears will drive the socket 21 ata rapid rate of speed causing the same to first turn in one direction and after making several rotations turn in the opposite direction.
The dasher is designated by the numeral 22 and consists of the body 23 having the stem 24 extending upwardly therefrom. The upper end of the stem is adapted to fit within the socket 21 and to receive a cotter pin 25, which extends through said socket and forms a connection between the churn dasher and the socket. Extending downwardly from the body 23 are the arms 26 which taper toward their outer end and incline outwardly and form agitators. These arms cooperate with the agitators 27 which when assembled form asubstantially diamond shaped structure With the wider portion positioned at a point substantially centrally of the longitudinal extremity of the arms 26'. Due to the particular construction 7 shown and described the preferred embodiment' of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the ppended claim;
What is claimed is A churn dasher operating mechanism in combination with a churn lid, a supporting, frame mounted on the churn lid, a segmental gear pivoted to said supporting frame, an operating lever secured to said gear, a pinion rotatably mounted at right angles to the gear, a gear wheel formed integral with said pinion, arms carried by the supporting frame and formed substantially at right angles to same, said arms being formed with openings in their outer ends, said openings being in alinement with the opening in the churn lid for the reception of the churn dash'er, a shaft rotatably mounted in the openings formed in the outer ends of the arms, and a pinion placed on the upper end of said shaft and adapted to mesh with the gear carried by the supporting frame for rotating the churn dasher;
