GEORGE E. BEACH, OF GLENROCK, WYOMING AUTOMATIC ALARM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BEACH, a citizen of the United States residing at Glenrock, in the county of onverse and State of Wyoming, have invented cert ain new and useful lmprovements in Automatic Alarms, of which the following is a; specification.
This invention relates toautomatic alarm for brooders and incubators and the primary object of the invention is to provide automatically operated means for sounding a signal bell when the hezit in the incubator or brooder varies above 'or below a certain desirable predetermined temperature.
One of the objects of the invention is to [)IOVldB HII electrically open sociatetl with a heating unit within the broodbr whereby t e diminishing or increasing heat from theqsaid unit will act to close an electric circuit whereby the signal bell will be sounded.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the referred embodiment and' i n the accompanying drawings, whereimo-like char:
actors denote like or corresponding, parts throughout the several views, in whic Figure 1 is a side elevation of abrooder or incubator partly broken away to disclose the interior having my invention arranged therein.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section on Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding arts throughout the several views, the broo er or incubator 1 is of any preferred constructioniand is provided on its interior with a heat generator 2 which, in this instance, is in the shape of a lamp burning any suitable fuel. Mounted upon the wall 3 ofthe incubator is a bracket 4 upon the end of which is ancing beam 5. Oneend o the beam is provided with a hook 6 to-which is connected an eye bolt 7 and this eye bolt carries a pair of super osed disks 8 and 9, which are held in space relation by a short sleeve 10. disk 8 is considerably smaller than thedisk 9-and by referrin to Fig.1 of the drawing it will be noted t at this disk is suspended directly over the top of the chimney which is carried by the heating unit 2. This causes both of the disks to be subjected to the Specification of Letters Patent.

waves of heat which rise through the chimney for the purpose of heatin the interior of the incubator. The disk 9 is of a larger diameter so that a greater heat receiving surface is presented. The opposite end of the beam 5 carries a weight 11 whereby the beam is suitably balanced when in operative position.
The interior of the brooder'is provided with supportin cross pieces 12 of wood or any other suitagle material and one of these cross pieces carries a vertically adjustable stem 13 which is projected through an openin formed in the said cross piece and held in adjusted position by a suitable set screw. The lower end of this stem is disposed directly above the eye bolt 7 sothat upward movement of the beam-5 will cause the eyebolt to contact with the stem '13. -Mounted in theother cross piece 12 i s/a. comparatively longer stem 14 which is adapted to be vertically adjusted and is held in fixed position by a suitable set screw mounted in one of the cross pieces. This stern -14= has its lower end provided with a finger 15'which projects inwardly beneath th edge of the disk 9. so thatdownward movement of the end of the beam 5 will bring the edge of the disk 9 into contact with the finger 15.
while the o' posite terminal is connected to a suitable e ectric condu'ctorlti the ends of which are in contact with the steins 13 and 14'. A signal bell 17 anda suitable switch llfillkane properly connectedand arranged. in
circuit from the batteries B.
'n operation, the heat generating unit 2 y will be ,i ited an permitted to burn until a suitabe temperature has beentobtained within the incubator.. Since theheat yvaves from the open top of the chinilney ',w1ll act upon the disks 8 and 9 and give them a tendency to rise, the weight 11 will be ad'usted sothat the beam 5 will be balan in a .pbsition to maintain thedisks atthe proper height above the top of the chimney. As
soon as the'heat becomes too great, the disks will be 'raised by the hatywaves and contact with the stem 13 willbe made thereby closing the circuit, the switch 18 beingprevi- 'ously closed, and causing the signal belll'i to be energized. When the temperature goes too low, the disks will begin to drop and the small disk 8 will pass into the open end of the chimney and the other disks will contact with the finger 1!; thereby again closing the circuit established through the stem 14 and its contact with the conductor 16 and causing the bell to be energized.
Since the decrease in the temperature will be caused by the supply of fuel being exhausted in the heat unit, it is obvious that the lam will be likely to smoke if not immediate y extin uished. /This is accomplished by the dlsk 8 which will pass into the chimney and smother any flame that is existing on the wick of the lamp. A smoky and unsanitary interior of the brooder is thereby prevented.
From the foregoing it will be observed a that a very simple and durable automatic alarm has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of, the invention or the scope of the r-laim hereunto appended.
I Witnesses:
I I claim:
An automatic alarm for incubators comprising a heating unit provided with a chimney, a balancing beam pivotally supported and having a hook arranged at one end and a weight at opposite end, the said hook vorrying a pair of disks of different diameters, the smaller disk being disposed below the larger disk, and adapted to extend into the chimney when the said beam is moved on its pivot whereby the said upper disk will rest upon the top of the said chimney and extend beyond the marginal edge thereof, an eleetric circuit normally open, and having one terminal connected with the said larger disk, and means arranged in the path of movement "of the said larger disk to contact therewith? for closing the said circuit when the smaller disk is extended into the said chim- IIB n testimon whereof I afiix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
