Be it known that I, O'rro J AEGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ElkinsrPark, county of Montgomery, and
State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of whichthe following is a full, clear," and. exact disclosure, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
iMy invention relates toimprovements in dispensing devices of the type comprising a casing inclosing a chamber, and provided withitwo doors by means of which access may be had to the interior of thechamber for the insertion or removal of the art cle or articles to be dispensed; and the ob ect of'myinventionis to provide a device of this I type of novel, simple and efiicient construction, including means whereby the doors may be operated. and controlled.-
With this object in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. I 1

The casing 8 is provided with a front door 15 which is pivoted orhinged on two alined screw studs 16 which are screwed into the sidewalls 17 of the chamber 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. This door 15 is movable on its hinge 16 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to theposition shown in Fig. 5, and back agaln, to afford access to the interior ofthe chamber 9 from the front of the frame or casing8. The plate 23 is fitted against the forward. face of a wall 2430f the frame or casing 8; and fitted against the rearward face of the wall 2a is a block 25 which isconnected to the plate 23 by screws 26 which extend through a guide slot 27 in the wall 24, whereby, when the weight 20 moves fromthe position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, the block 25 will be moved down to the position shown in Fig. 5. When the block 25 is in the position shown in Fig. 5, a roller 28 carried thereby is in the path of the rear' door 10, so that, when the rear door 10 is opened from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the osition shown by dot-and-dash lines in Fig 4, the door 10 will engage the roller 28 and raise the block 25 and weight 20 to the position shown in Fig. 4, thereby closing the front door 15.
In addition to the weight 20, I provide a spring 29, havingone end attacliecl to the weight 20 and the other end attached to the frame or casing 8, and which tends to pull the weight 20- down from the position shown in Fig. 4 and thereby assists in opening the front door 15. Just before the Weight 20 reaches the position shown in Fig. 5,during its downward movement, the spring29 is compressed and it thus acts as a cush10n for the weight as it comes to rest in the position shown in F ig. 5.

When the front door 15 is moved to the.
closed position, shown in Fig.4, it iszretained in this position against the actionof the weight 20 and spring. 29 by devices which I shall now describe. One side of the door 15 is provided with an arm 33 which extends rearwardly from the hinge. 16' and bears at its free end upon a dog 34 which,.
in. effect, is a part of a member 35 which is pivoted, at 36,to.the casing 8. The weight 20,.presses the arm 33 down upon the dog 34 a and thereby tends to. move the member 35 on its pivot 36 away from the arm331to free the arm 33 from the dog 34. The member 35 is prevented from moving away from the arm 33 by a latch 37 which is pivoted:
to the member35 and has a hooked end which engages a shoulder 38 formed, on a bracket 39 on the casing 8. The latch 37Iis adapted to be raised from engagement with the shoulder 38 by an arm 40 which ispivoted, at 41, to thebracket 39, and said latch 37 is movable from engagement withtheshoulder 38 to the position shown in Fig. 3 and back again into engagement with the shoulder. The arm40 or latch. 37 may be raised by hand or by any suitable devices to free,
the latch from the shoulder38. When the latch 37 is thus raised, and the member 35 thereby freed, the weight 20 forces thearm 33 down and causes it to force the dog 34 and member 35 away from the arm 33 to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby freeing the arm 33 andpermitting the weight20-and spring 29 to open the front door 15 and move the arm 33 do Wnto the positionshown" in .Fig. 3. Immediately after the arm 33 escapes the dog 34, the member 35 automatically returns by gravity to the normal osition shown in Fig.2, and the latch re -c turns bygravityinto position to engage the shoulder 38 when the member 35 reaches its. said normal position.

A part 43 of. the dog 34 engagesthe member 35, and" the part 43 is maintained normally-against the member 35 to hold the dog 34 in its normal position on-the member 35 by a suitable spring 44 secured to the member 35 and engaging the dog34. The connections between the dog 34 andthe member 35 and the location of the pivot 42 with relation to the engagement of'the arm 33 with the dog 34 are such that the pressure of the weight 20 holds the part 43 of the dog 34 against the member 35 and tends to move the member 35. away from thearm 33 and hold the latoh37 against. the shoulder 38, as previously explained.
After the arm 33 moves to the position shown .inFig. 3,. and the member 35 and latch 37 return by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 2, the door 15 is closed by opening the door 10, as. previously explained, thereby moving: the arm 33back to the position shown in Fig. 2. Asthe arm 33 is thus movedback to thisposition it engagesthe dog 34, and forces it back against the spring 44, until the end of the arm 33 escapes the top ofthe dog 34, whereuponthe dog 34 springs back to itsnormal position shown in Fig. 2, and then, when the. arm 33- is released, it again rests upon the top of the dog34to retain the door 15 in its. closed position.
The arm 33 is. provided with a projection 45 which is adapted to engage the arm 40 and return it to the position shown inFig. 3, when. the arm 33 ismoved to the position shown in: Fig. 2, the arm 40 being adapted to be retained in the positions to which it is moved by its! frictionalengagement with parts of the machine.
When: the front door 515 is moved; from its closed position showninFig. 4, a part 46 is'moved from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5 andiinto the space occupied by the free end of the door 15 when closed, thereby preventing the complete closing of the door 15 until the return of thepart 46 to .the position shown in Fig. 4, for a purpose hereinafter explained, and I shall now describe the means for moving the part 46. The part 46 rests upon the compartment floor 13 and is provided with an arm 47 which extends down througha guideslot48in the floor a 13. shown in-Fig. 5. The action of the springs 53 and 55 issuch that when the front door 15 is opened,'while the rear door remains closed, the spring 53 will project the part 46' to theposition shown in Fig. 5; and that,
thereafter, when the rear door 10 is opened and the projection 52 thereby moved from the end of the tube 50, the spring 53 having spent itself, spring 55 will move the part 46, rod 49, spring 53 and tube 50 bodily back from the position shown by full lines to the position shown by dot-and-dash lines in Fig. 5, thereby permitting the front door 15 to be completely closedby the action of plained. i
Theoperation of the dev1ce, briefly described, is as follows:

Assuming that the chamber? is supplied with the article or articles to be dispensed and that the parts re in the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the arm 40 is raised. This may be done by the hand of the attendant after he receives the purchase price of the article or articles to be dispensed, or' it may be done by suitable coin controlled devices operated by the customer infront of the casing 8 by the insertion therein of a coin or coins representing the purchase price of the article or articles to be dispensed.
The raising of the arm 40 lifts the latch 37 from engagement with the shoulder, thereby freeing the member 35 and permitting the arm 33, under the influence of the weight 20 and spring 29, to move the dog 34 and member 35 to the position shownin Fig. 3, thus freeing the arm 33 and permittingthe weight 20 and spring 29, to move the arm 33 to the position shown in Fig. 3,
and thus open the front door 15 or move it to the position shown in Figs; 3 and 5.
When the front door 15 is thus opened, the
latch37 returningby gravity to a. position to reengag'e the shoulder 38. The attendant now depresses the latch 12 and raises the rear door 10 to the position, shown by dotand-dash lines in Fig. 4, and recharges the chamber 9 with another article or articles to be dispensed. The attendant then closes the rear door 10, and, as he moves it to its closed position, it engages the beveled nose 14 of the latch 12 and depresses it, and the latch 12 thereafter springs up and retains the rear door 10 in its closed position.
As the attendant raises the rear door 10 to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig.
4,'the door 10 engages the roller 28 and raises the block 25 and weight 20 to the position shown in Fig. 2, and thereby closes the upward jmovementof the rear door 10 against the roller 28, as previously ex the front door 15. As the front door 15 'moves to itsclosed position, its arm 33 is back 4 against the action of its spring 44 until the arm 33 escapes the upper end of the dog, whereupon the dog springs out under the free end of the arm- 33 in the position shown in Fig; 2; and, when the upward pressure of the door 10 against the roller 28 is removed, the arm 33 engages the dog 34 which locks the front door 15 in its closed position against the weight 20 and spring 29 for a succeeding opening operation.
When the front door was opened, as previously explained, the spring 53 projected the part 46 from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position in Fig. 5 and into the space occupied bythe free end of the door 15 when it was in its closed position, and, therefore, the part 46 in this projected position prevents a customer or any one in front of the casing 8 from closing the door 15, should he attempt to do so, sufficiently to move the free end of the arm 33 above the top of the dog 34. When, however, the front door 15 is closed by the attendant opening the rear door 10, as previously eX- plained, the projection 52 on the rear door 10 is moved away from the closed end of It will thusbe seen that the front door will remain open to indicate to the customer that the chamber 9 is empty, until thechalnber 9 is recharged. by the attends ant who, upon reohargin raises the rear door 10 to gain access thereto and thereby closes the front door 15. When thepart 46, rod 49, spring.53ande, tube 50 are in the dot-anddaslrline position shown in Fig. 5, the spring53is ina spent condition; that is to say, it has-no force tending to move the part46 relatively to the tube 50 When, however, the partsore i -the positionshown in Fig. 4;, the spring 53 is compressed and its force, tendingito move the part 46 to the position shown inFig. 15, is greater than the pull of thespring 5-5 which moves the part 46, rod 49 and tnbe shown in Fig. 5, whenfthetrear doorlO is opened.
After the attendant-has recharged the chamber 9 and closed the rear door 10, the parts are left in the positionshown in Figs. 1,2 and 4 for a succeedingoperation.
I claim: 1. In a dispensingdevice, the combination of a casing having-a front door and a rear @door each being movable to open and closed positions and affording access to the interior of the casing, means operative to lock the front door in the closed position when it-is moved thereto and the rear door is away from its closed position, and means controlled by the rear door to prevent the operation of the first named means when the rear door is in the closed position.

In a dispensing device, the combination of a casing having a front door and a rear door each being movable to open and closed positions and affording access to the interior of the casing, apart adapted to engagethe front door and movable into and from'an operative position preventing the frontdoor from being moved to its closed position, and a spring device adapted when in operative-position to move said part into operative position when the front door is moved from its closed position, said device being adapted to be moved to its operative position by the rear door when it is moved to its closed position.

In a dispensing device, the combination of a support, a door controlling part movable from a normal position to control the opening of a door, means tending to move said part from its normal position, a member provided with a spring pressed dog engaging said part and holding it in its normal position, said member being movable from a normal position to which it automatically returns after being moved therefrom, said means tending to move said member and its part, and a latch device adapted to automatically hold said member in its normal position when moved thereto and being operative to release said member, whereby when said member is released, said means will automatically move it and said part from their normal positions, said dog permitting the return of said part to its normal osition without moving said member after 1t returns to its normal position and is held therein by said latch device.
