Application filed, October 18, 1917. Serial No. 197,290.
of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Hub, of which the following is a speci-.
fication.
The subject of this invention is a wheel hub, and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a hub in which the spokes may be easily mounted, second, to provide a hub which may be operated to tighten the spokes third, to provide a simple, durable and eflicient hub.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing a fragment of a wheel constructed in accordance with the invention, the outer plate and its associated parts removed;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the hub with the cap removed;
Fig. 3 is a central, longitudinal section of the hub;
Fig. 4: is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference The hub consists of a cylindrical box 1 formed with a stepped annular flange 2 at its inner end, which end is countersunk, as indicated at 3. A lug or key 4 is also provided on the flange 2. While only one lug 4 is shown herein, it is to be understood that a series of lugs may be provided about the flange, if desired.
A sleeve 5 has a close sliding fit on the box 1 and this sleeve is preferably made of resilient steel. The sleeve 5 is slit longitudinally at one end to form tongues or strips 6 which may be slightly sprung outwardly, as seen most clearly in Fig. 3. At its other or inner end the sleeve is formed with an outwardly projecting lug 7.
annular retaining plate 8 encircles the box and sleeve and is formed with a central while the inner wall 10 is provided with a slot 12 for the reception of the lug 7. By this means the box 1 and sleeve 5 are secured to the retaining plate 8 so that the parts may notrevolve relative to each other. v
The box 1 is threaded exteriorly and upon its outer end is threaded a sleeve 13 the inner end of which is beveled, .as indicated at 14:, to take under the tongues 6 with a wedging eifect. The outer end of the sleeve 13 may be provided with slots 15 for the reception of a spanner or other device with which the sleeve may be screwed on or ofi.
An annular retaining plate 16 encircles the sleeve 1, and is formed with a tubular projection which is threaded on the sleeve. A portion of the outer face of the projection, indicated at 17, is hexagonal to receive Seated 011 the spring strips 6 and clamped between the inner plate 16, are spokes 20 of the wheel.
In practice the device is operated as follows:
The parts being assembled, as hereinbefore described, when it is desirable to tighten the spokes or force them outwardly against the rim, the cap 19 is removed and the sleeve 13 threaded farther on the box 1 thereby expanding the resilient tongues 6 and forcing the spokes outwardly radially. During this operation the plate 16 may have been slightly withdrawn from the spokes so as not to bind them, and may again be clamped against the spokes when they have been sufliciently expanded.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hub, comprising a box formed with a stepped flange, there being a lug projecting from the flange, a sleeve on the box and formed with tongues, a retaining plate having a cylindrical projection formed with spaced inner and outer walls mounted on the sleeve and box, the said outer wall of the cylindrical projection provided with a slot for the reception of the lug, means for locking the sleeve; against rotation relative I to the box and retaining plate, spokes seated on the tongues, means for expanding the 1:
tongues to force the spokes outwardly along wradi-al; lines,.-aand means. for ela nping-v the spokes against the retaining plate.
2. A hub, comprising a"box'fo'rmed-With a stepped annular flange atone end, there being; 'a b g oir-'the fiange, a sleeve on 'thebox formed with arlug at 'one end and tongues with amentral 'cylindricalprojection formed with spaeedinner 'and' outer Walls, mounted walls eaoh' provid'e'd with a' slotforthereceptionof the lug on' the-sleeve "and-the *lug threaded on the sleeve, spokes-betweenl-the retaining plates and resting on "the'tongues,
'and a'eap threaded on the last mentioned retaining plate for closing the hub.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing =as-1ny'fiown, I have hereto a'liixed my signature in -thepresence of two Witnesses.
