To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS WINNING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident'of the city of Ottawa, in the'Province of Ontario and the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches, of which the followingis a full description.

With these and other objects in view, the invention .consists. essentially, of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a railroad of any usual description consisting of the main track B and the side track C which is controlled by the switch operating mechanism D. This switch operating mechanism consists of a pair of boxes or casings 10 and 11 operativ-ely connected by a pipe 12, so that the said casings and pipe will contain the working mechanism and protect the same from moisture, dirt and the like.

mechanism E in a manner to be made clear hereafter. j j j The crank end or the shaft 13 ispivotally connected to the rod 20, while the switch 21 is pivotally connected to the rod 22, and the free ends of the rods 20 and 22 lie alongside of each other and are embraced by the spiral spring 23 which is connected to the free end of the said rods in such a manner that while it permits of the switch 21 being opened 011 rotation of the crank shaft 13, will at the same time give the desired yield to prevent breakage taking place should the switch 21 be fouled with stones, dirt or the like.
The car mechanism E consists of a plunger 24: having a roller 25 on the lower end thereof, the said plunger being operatively mounted on the foot board of the car F, and being spring controlled by means of the spiral spring 26.
The upper end of the unger 24: is pro vided with a foot pad 2%, so that it may be readily depressed by the driver, .and on pressure being removed from the foot pad 27, the plunger 24: will immediately re turn to its normal elevated position as shown in Fig. 2.
The roller 25 will coact with the depression 28 between the tracks adjacent to the star wheel 18 and by the use of this roller any undue friction between the plunger and depression is eliminated.
In that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the crank shaft 13 coacts with a locking member 30 which consists of a pair of resilient plates 31 adapted to engage with the shaft on each side of the crank portion, the plates 31 being operatively supported by the bracket 32.
It will be seen that the pairs of plates 31,
while being located on opposite sides of the crank portionprovide a space 33 therebetween through which the rods 20 and 22 operate.
When a railroad is equippedwith a device of this nature and the car F is approaching a switch, it is only necessary for l the driver'to depress the plunger 24: causing Should, for instance, the driver desire to continue on. the main track B, the plunger 24% on contacting with the star wheel 18 will rotate the crank shaft, so that the switch 20 21 is opened, permitting the carto'continue inthe desired path of travel.

What I claim as my invention is:
