Application filed April 5, 1917. Serial Ito. 160,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,.PHILI1 K. Wu.- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at' Glastonbury, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soap Cakes, of which the following is a specification.
y' invention relates to the class of articles above named, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide means for securing an inserted piece within a cake of soap in a sightly and eficient manner and without any liability of the insert becoming loose. I
One form of soap ca'ke embodying my invention and in the making and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as 7 relative others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1' is a face view of a cake of soap embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 1s a view in section through the cake on plane denoted by dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and showing the body tightly embracing the insert.
Fig. 3 is a similar view but showing the size (exaggerated) of the insert and body at the time they are placed together.
My invention is especially applicable in the production of an ornamental soap cake, the ornament being in the nature of an inserted piece of soap of a character difi'erent from that of the main part of the cake, one difference in characteristic being in color so that the outline of the insert may be readily distinguished.
carrying my invention into eflect I produce a cake 3 of soap of one color makmg a recess 4: therein in which the insert 5 of a diderent color the insert is located in a recess that is, an openmg extending only partially throu h the cake, but this feature is not essential to the embodiment of my invention.
In order to securely. hold-the insert in:
place in the recess I so manipulate the mass com rising the cake and that comprising the insert that the former will close about and squeeze the insert so that it will be I tightly held. In a satisfactory method of is placed. Preferably absolute y" forming the cake of soap and embodying my invention the material to comprise the main part of the cake is provided with a certain amount of moisture, as water, and the material comprising the insert is provided with a considerably less amount of moisture as water. A cake of soap is formed to the proper shape from the mass containing the greater amount of moisture and of a certain color, the recess 4 being formed in this mass. The insert 5 of contrasting color is formed to proper shape to fit the recess in the other mass of soap containing the greater amount of moisture. As herein shown this insert is in the form Specification of Letters Patent. PfiflbQfl'flMadl M 28 1191 of an animal which-is placed in the recess in the cake, and the whole is then subjected to a certain amount of pressure in forming dies to compact the mass but not to an extent to distort the shape of the recess or the insert. I
r being thus formed the cake is allowed to dry out and harden and in this process the mass comprising the cake will close about the insert, owing to the relaof the outer cake as compared with the inner piece or insert, and thus tightly grasp 'tively greater and more rapid shrinkage to cause the body part to have the greatest amount, and the parts should be united at this time so that when the'insert is placed in the body part the latter will contam the greater amount of moisture.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the soap cake which I now consider to re resent the'best embodiment thereof; but I esire to have it understood that the cake shown is only illustrative, and that the. invention can be carried out by other means.
I claim 1. A soap cake compg a body part,
and an insert'inclosed t 1.. the by p lltllb and both of substantially the same material, said .body part having more moisture than 2. A soap cake comprising a body part, vand an insert inclosed within the body part and secured by a contracting action of the body part on the insert.
' 3. soap cake comprising .a bod part,
i and an insert inclosed within the boy part and both of substantially the same material,
the insert being secured within the body part by the contracting action of the latter caused by shrinking.
placing in the recess an insert of substantially the same material as the body part but having a less degree of moisture.
5. The process of making a soap cake that consists in forming the body of the cake from a mass having a certain degree of moisture and with a recess therein, placing in said recess another soft mass with a'less degree of moisture and then permitting the entire cake to dry out whereby the insert is held by the binding action of the body of the cake caused by shrinking.
6. A soap cake comprising a body part and an insert shaped to fit together, the last to be formed containing an amount of moisture to cause thegreater amount of moisture 37 to be in the body part.
