BINDER-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May as, rare.
Application filed September 4, 1917. Serial N 0. 189,432.
of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a binder truck by means of which a binder can be turned in less space than is usually required for the purpose, the drive or bull wheel forming a pivot but turning sufli ciently to prevent forcing into the soil while the grain wheel rolls backward.
A further object is to eliminate side draft entirely in the operation of the machine.
A further object is to provide a truck of strong and durable construction and one which can be readily attached to any style of binder.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a plan view of a binder with my improved truck attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the truck,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view,
Fig. l is a sectional view on the line 44C of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, showing the manner of connecting the tongue with the frame of the truck wheel,
Fig. 6 is a sectional View on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, 2 represents a binder of ordinary constructionr having the usual supporting wheels 3 and 1. 5 represents the forward portion or draft section of the binder frame and 6 is the axle of the truck having reach rods 7 pivotally connecting it with ,the part 5. A king bolt 7 passes through the forward portion of the part 5 and a forked casting 8 is pivoted at 9 on the axle and has a bearing plate 10 for the part 5. A tongue 11 has a forked rear end which straddles the part 5 and is pivoted on the bolt 7. The ends of the axle 6 are forked, as indicated at 12, and spindles 13 are mounted on vertical pivots 14 within said forks and are free to oscillate thereon in a horizontal plane. Frames 15 are provided to encircle the wheels 16 on said spindles and form bearings at 17 for the outer ends of said spindles, the inner portions of said frames being journaled at 18 on the pivots 141 and separated from the ends of the axle by sleeves 19. The frames and wheels therefore oscillate together, inde- 'pendently of the aXle 6, which is held in its normal transverse position with respect to the part 5 by the reach rods 7. For connecting the frames with the tongue to insure simultaneous movement thereof, I provide bars 20 pivotally connected at 21 to the outer portions of the frames 15 and having independent pivotal connections at their inner ends with a block 22 on the underside of the draft tongue 11. The pivots of these bars are in the form of swivels allowing the bars to swing in horizontal and vertical planes and adjust themselves to the different positions of the tongue and allow the wheels to drop into depressions in the ground or ride over obstructions therein independently of each other, and thereby prevent racking and twisting of the truck and its connections.
In the operation of the machine, when it is desired to make a short turn with the hinder the tongue is swung to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and thereupon the bars 20 will swing the wheels and frames so that the wheels may turn substantially in the direction of movement of the team and allow the binder to turn as on a pivot, the drive wheel rolling slightly to avoid digging into the soil, while the grain wheel moves backward. I have found that this short turn is accomplished by the arrangement of the frames on the axle of the truck and the connections I have provided between these frames and the draft tongue, the wheels being turned to a position almost at right angles to the draft portion of the binder frame, the bars 20 automatically accommodating themselves to the swing of the wheels and frames without binding or cramping and the connection of these bars with the outer portion of the wheeled frames permitting a greater degree of movement of the wheels and a consequent shorter turn of the machine. This ordinarily is not possible in trucks of this type. q
The axle 6, as shown in Fig. 2, is free to rock with the wheels on the horizontal pivot 9, its connection with the tongue, and allow the Wheels to accommodate themselves to the ground over Wh1ch the machine is passmg, and each wheel is free to osclllate forward and backwardon vertical pivots p'rovided at the ends of the axle.
In various Ways the details of construction, hereinv shown and described may be modified and still be Within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. 1A binder truck comprising an axle having means for connecting it with a binder frame and held against horizontal oscillation, frames pivoted on said iaXle, spindles pivoted at one end on the ends of said axle and having bearings, at their op- :posite ends in saidira-mes, Wheels mounted on said spindles, *a draft tongue connected with .said axle, and bars. pivotally connected topics "of this patent may .be obtained for at their inner ends to said tongue and having a pivotal connection at their outer ends with said frames.
'2. A binder "truck comprising an axle having means for connecting 1t with a binder frame and held against horizontal oscillation, frames pivoted on said axle, spindles pivoted at one end on the ends of said :axle :and having bearings at their opposite ends in said frames, wheels mounted on said spindles, a dra fit tongue connected Withsaid axle, :and bars pivotally connected at their inner ends to said tongue and having pivotal connections at their outer ends with the outer portlons of said 1 11111105 outside the plane of said wheels.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my ilran'd t11is25 day of August, 191'7.
