IMPROVEMEN'I IN REFRIGERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,784, dated May 14,1872.
1'0 all whom it may'concern:
Be it known that I, HOMIER C. CAIN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Combined Refrigerator, Reservoir, and Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.

'The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a refrigerator in such manneras that a combined cold-water reservoir, safe, and refrigerator are produced and the special object of which is to economise the use of ice by making the water formed by the melting ice to contribute to the maintenance of a low degree of Vtemperature-in the safe, and which water is collected in a reservoir within the refrigerator, and from which it may be drawn for ordinary uses. Ot' the abovesaid refrigerator, &c.,the following is a more full and complete description.
In Fig. 1, A represents the case of the apparatus, which is constructed of wood and in four compartments, B, C, D, and E, of said compartmentsB C are for the reception of articles for safe keeping, whereas D is the ice-box, and E the reservoir. The bottom or floor F of the ice-box and reservoir is of metal, and the sides' there are lined with the same material. On examination of Fig. 3 it will be seen that said bottom F forms an inclined plane, reaching from the top of one side of the case down near to the bottom of the opposite side, and forms therewith an angle, G, Fig. 3,'the bottom of the reservoir, and which reservoir is seperated from the ice-box by the perforated l removable partition H, which is the ceiling of the reservoir and part of the licor of the icebox. I I, Fig. 1, are joints forthe support of the metal ceiling F. Immediately at the lower edge of said ceiling is a trough, J, the purpose of which will presently be shown.
The practical use of the abovedescribed refrigerator, &c., is as follows: The ice is put into the compartment D, from which the cold is communicated through the metal ceiling F, to the compartments BC, which are thereby kept at a low temperature. As the ice melts, the water therefrom iiows down into the reservoir through perforations at h, and is there retained, which, being but one or two degrees above the temperature of the ice, contributes to the continuation of the low temperature of the compartments B C, which it transmits through the metal ceiling F. The utilizing of the cold water in this way saves Ithe use of ice, which together therewith, keep the two compartments B C at a temperature nearly as low as though the ice-box and the reservoir bot-h were filled with ice. I
The water may be drawn from the reservoir through the pipe A/Fig 2, when needed for use, or to prevent the reservoir from becoming so full as to come in contactwith the ice above. By this means a supply of ice-cold water can be had at all times for any needful purposes. The moisture that may be deposited upon the metalceiling ot' thecompartments B y C, as it trickles down, dropsinto the conductor J, from which it may be collected in a vessel on the inside, from the pipe I.
Claim.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The inclined partition or ceiling F, forming a division between the ice-chamber and the safe or cold chamber C, and perforated removable partition H, when constructed and arranged with relation to the walls of a refrigerator, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
