Description
DEwrrr CLINTON BAKER, 0E FULTON-NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BoLT-I-IoLoERs Foa RAILROAD RAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,772, dated May 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWITT C. BAKER, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful BoltHolder for Railroad Rails 5 and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification` Figure lvbeing a top view of the bolt-holder as applied to a railroad rail; Fig. 2, a side view thereof 3 Fig. 8, an end view ofthe same. y Like letters designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
The parts comprising my bolt-holder are a grapple or hook, A, and a lever, B. The grapple or hook A is so formed that it will hook the hook at b. Its short arm has a widened' end, formed with a .cavity or socket, c, or otherwise so shaped tha-t it will it over the head of the bolt a: and hold it from turning when pressed irlnly against. The long arm of the lever is of sufticient length to cause the required pressure to be brought against the bolt when the operator bears upon it. Its
outer end may be attened or 'sharpened for convenience in withdrawing bolts, or for other USG'.
To use the instrument, the grapple or hook A is hooked over the edge of the rail, and the socket c of the lever B is placed against the head of the bolt. The long arm of the lever is' then pressed down, thereby driving the bolt completely into the holes through the rail and fish-plates. Then, by resting his knee or foot on the lever, the workman can easily hold the bolt from turning while he screws onor tightens up or unscrews the nut of the bolt, as the occasion requires. Thus one man can do this work with greater ease and more expeditiously than two men can by the usual mode, when one man holds the bolt from turning while another screws on the nut.
I do not claim a bolt-holder composed of a hook, screw, and swiveled nut; but- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bolt-holder, consisting of a hook or grapple, A, and a socket-lever, B, hinged together and operating substantially iu the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
Specilication signed by me this 26th day of February, 1872.
DEWITT CLINTON BAKER'.
