THOMAS SGANTLIN, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND l PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. SCANTLIN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING-CASES FOR OILAND OTHER CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,750, dated May 14, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Packingase for Oil and other Cans, invented by THOMAS SGANTLIN, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana.
The object of this invention is to furnish a oase for inclosing and protecting cans of oil or other liquids or substances in the course of transportation, storing, or sale; and it consists in a case constructed of metal, or of metal and wood combined, and with a gate for the discharge-orifice or spout of the can, the construction and arrangement being as hereniafter described.
Y greatly strengthened by the corrugations. D
is the bottom of the case, which may be made of Wood, and fastened in the cylinder in any manner. C is the top of the case, made also of Wood, but the entire case may be made of metal. D represents the can of oil or other liquid or substance. E is the discharge-tube of the can, placed just below the top or end thereof, and projecting throughthe case, as
seen in Fig. 1, so that the contents of the can may be discharged Without taking the latter from the case. F is a gate, which slides down over the end of the discharge-tube so as to securely confine the cork which closes the tube. The slide is confined in grooves in the plate G, which latter is securely riveted to the cylinder of the case, as seen in Fig. 2. When the cover is placed in the case over the cai1,tl1e.top of the sliding-gate may be bent down over it, as seen in Fig. 1; or the cover may be secured in any other suitable manner. H is the bail attached to the case. I is the tilting-handle.
I do not confine myself to the precise form or arrangement of any of the parts described, as they may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl l. The case A, made of either corrugated or plain metal, substantially as and for the purposes described. l
2. The slide F, in combination with the case A, substantially as and for the purpose described. Y
3. The combination and arrangement, in a packing case i'or oil-and other cans, of the tube E, bail H, handle I, and sliding-door F, substantially as shown and described.
THOMAS SGANTLIN.
