Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, BRANT TALKINGTON, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Harrington, in'the county of Lincoln and State of Washington, have in vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to clevises, and more particularly to clevises for draft eveners and apparatus of this and other nature in connection with which con-z structions of the present type are utilized, my object being the provision of a simple, inexpensive construction whereby to do away with the use of pins extending through one or more of the parts to be connected with their resulting projecting ends, and to otherwise avoid projections of any such nature as are likely to catch and retain passing parts or materials.
A further object of my invention is to provide a clevis construction, the parts of which are so formed as to be capable of twisting and bending so as to adapt the same to form a complete connection with but a single pair of connecting links.
ith the above in mind my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement, and operation of the improved clevis to be now described with respect to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one of a number of types of draft eveners in connection with which my invention may be utilized;

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the links of the clevis.
Referring now to these figures, and particularly to Fig. 1, as shown in the utilization of my invention, the draft evener there shown in the form of a three-horse evener consists of amain evener beam 10, supplemental evener beams 11 fulcrumed interme diate their ends upon connections extending from the outer ends of the main evener beam 10, and swingletrees 12, the latter of which are intermediately connected to the supplemental evener beams 11, the central swingletree being connected to the two inner ends of the beams 11 and the outer swingletrees 12 being connected to the outer ends of the beams 11.

although it is to be noted that this illustration is by way of example only and that my invention is capable of utilization with equal facility and effectiveness in connection with eveners for two and four horses and others, as well as in various other characters of mechanism embodying two parts to be flexibly connected where the ordinary clevis is applicable.
In constructing the clevis proposed by my invention it has been the main consideration to avoid the use of all projecting parts such as would be likely to catch and retain material or passing parts, as well as to avoid complete perforation and weakening of the parts to be connected, to which end I provide each of the parts, beams, or the like, such as the evener beams 10 and 11, with a metallic strap extending therearound, either wholly or in part, it being preferable, however, that the straps be generally of U- shape to surround three sides of the part to be connected, namely, the upper and lower faces and one side surface, with the free ends of the extensions of the strap as indicated at 14 projecting toward the other or opposed part to be connected thereto. These straps are perforated by openings 15 alined with one another through the extensions of the strap to receive the inturned opposing extremities 16 of the clevis links 17, each of which is identical in form and generally of U-shape so as to engage one another in the manner shown, either bent or twisted as shown in Fig. 1 where the two parts to be connected lie in a similar horizontal plane or untwisted where one part is horizontal and the other vertical.
The angular extremities 16 of the links enter the openings 15 of the retaining straps, as before described, and are effectively held in use thereby, the shape and relative engagement of the links providing for increasingly close engagement of their extensions with the parts to be connected, as the strain upon these parts increases in use.
I am thus enabled to provide a construction capable of wide range of use for the flexible connection of parts to whose joining the usual olevises are applicable without perforation of the parts to be connected except for the use of such fastening members as are necessary to prevent shifting the supporting straps l4 and their displacement from the parts to be connected, and without the use comprising the combination with parts to be connected, of straps engaging the same and having oppositely disposed perforations, and interengaging links, each of which is generally U-shaped, having the ends of their extensions bent angularly and inwardly for engagement and retention in the perforations of the supporting straps, whereby to avoid the perforation of the parts to be connected as well as projecting connected parts. 2. A clevis of the character described, comprising the combination with parts to be connected, of straps generally of U-shape extending partially around the said parts to be connected, with their free ends projecting toward one another, and having openings in their extensions adjacent relatively opposite faces of the said parts to be connected, and interengaging U-shaped links having their extremities provided with inturned angular extensions for engagement and retention in the openings of the said supporting plates.
