ROPE-SOCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed October 9, 1917. Serial No. 195,561.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, Scor'r RUSSELL Mc- CONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in Rope-Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rope sockets for use in connection with oil well drilling bits, and the primary objectA of the invention is to provide a rope socket of this character which can be quickly, easily and conveniently adjusted to provide a swivel or nonswivel socket as desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive rope socket which is so constructed that it will take care of or compensate for the jar an rebound action of the socket and bit with respect to the line wire rope attached to it, incident todrilling.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and afterward specifically claimed. i

Similar characters of reference are used to denote corresponding parts throughout the following description and accompanying drawings.
In order that the construction and operation of the invention may be readily comprehended, I have illustrated an approved embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings, and will now proceed to fully delongitudinal scribe the same, in connection with said drawings, in which 1 indicates the cylindrical body of the rope socket, the upper end of which is provided with a reduced neck Q, while the lower end is recessed on opposite sides as at 3 to provide wrench holds whereby the socket may be conveniently and securely attached drilling bit.

An entrance opening 6 extends transversely through the vertical wall of the body and communicates with the larger bore 5, that portion of the body 1 at the lower end o the entrance opening 6 being beveled or inclined inwardly as indicated by 7. The body 1 has formed therein a key way 8 extending longitudinally of and communicating with the larger bore 5.
The lower end of the body 1 is provided centrally with a conical threaded socket 9 adapted to receive the threaded end of the well drilling bit to securely attach the socket to the latter.
A cylindrical swivel member 10 is slidably mounted within the larger bore 5 and is provided in its upper end with a restricted bore 11 communicating with a tapered bore 12, the lower end of the line wire rope extends freely through the body bore 4 and the restricted bore 11 and is rigidly and wedgingly secured to the member 10 within the tapered bore 12 thereof without the use of Babbitt or other similar metal. This 10 is provided with a removable key 14 in its vertical side wall which projects laterally into the key way 8 having vertical sliding movements therein. When it is desired to use the socket as a non swivel socket, the key 14 is used but when it is desired to use the socket as a swivel socket the key is removed in a manner that will be presently explained.
15 indicates a cylindrical plug having a tapered stem 16 removably positioned within the upper flared end of the bore 4 so that the plug will rest on the bottom of the larger bore 5. This plug 15 is removable through the entrance opening 6, but is normally held in the position shown through the medium of a pin 16 which extends transversely through the body 1 and a groove 17 formed in the upper surface of the plug.
When it is desired to convert the socket into a swivel socket the pin 16 and plug 15 are removed so that the swivel member 10 can be also removed through the entrance opening 6 to remove the key 14, after which the parts can be reassembled into operative relation to each other.
It is to be noted that bore 5 is slightly greater than the length of the the length of the swivel member 10 so that the latter may have a slight amount of sliding movement therein tovv compensate for the jar and rebound movement of the body l with respect to the rope 13 in the use of the socket incidentv to drilling.
If desirable the body with an opening 18 establishing communi.'- cation between oneof the recesses 3 and the internal bore 5 whereby sediment or other foreign matter may conveniently drain from the bore 5.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, is:
1. A rope socket comprising a cylindrical body having a central longitudinal bore communicating with a larger bore arranged intermediate its ends, said body being provided with an ent-rance opening in its vertical walll communicating with said larger bore, a swivel member slidably mounted in said larger bore 'a rope extendii'ig freely through the upper end of said body and rigidly attached to said swivel member, means to prevent independent rotation of the swivel member with respect to said body, and means for maintaining said swivel member within said larger bore.
2. A rope socket comprisinga cylindrical body having a central longitudinal bore communicating with a larger bore arranged substantially intermediate its ends, said body having an entrance opening in its v ertical wall communicating with said larger bore, a swivel member vertically removable within said larger bore, a line rope extending through the upper end of said body and rigidly attached to said swivel member, detachable means carried by said, swivel member to prevent independent rotation of the swivel member with said bod for'maintaining the swivel member' within said larger bore.
3. A rope socket comprising a cylindrical body having a central longitudinal bore communicating with a larger bore arranged substantially intermediate its ends, Said body being provided in its vertical wall with an entrance opening communicatingwithtsaid 1 may be provided v and meansy intermediate its ends, said body beingI provided with an entrance opening in its side wall communicating with said'larger bore, a non-rotatable swivel member vertically movable within the upper end of said larger bore, a line wire rope extending through the upper end of said body and rigidly connected to the swivel member, a plug removably positioned' within and on the bottom of said larger bore, and means for rigidly holding the plug in said position.
