Specification of Letters Iaten t,
Patented May 28', 1918'.
Application filed July '30; 1915. Serial Nb. 42,683;
To all whom itm'ay concern:
Be it known that We, EDWARD J. BoWLns,
ELMni: Mnrz' and HERMANMETZ citizens" of the'United States, residentsof' Clinton, in
the county of Dewitt and State ofIllinois,
object of our invention is the provision of a" sim'ple and eflicient mechanismofthat type which will bead and form gutters or troughs with facility;
A'further obj ect is' the provision of ad'e vice of this character in which a'sheet ofmetal may be placedand beaded and then formed into a suitable-gutter or trough, provision'being made for suitable adjustments, wherebytrougl'is i and gutters of dlfierent" sizes may be made in one and the same ma cl11ne.' r
A further o'bjectis the pr'o'vlsion of a de viceof this'charactenwhich ii'iclud'es 'a formbig-trough, a.*tubular-for1n mounted and adapted'to be pressed into saidtrOugh, a"
beadingrodmounted on one'side of said trough and an additional form onthe other side of said trough, adapted to complete'the forming "of the gutter.
A" further object of our 'inventionis the' provision of a trough having means i for varying its size and having a beading rod mo'unted" ad acent one side thereof, a
forming cylinder pi votally and removably mounted on the same side of said trough and adapted to be forced into said trough to shape a sheet of metal, and an additional form on the other side'of said trough adapted to' be'mov'ed over said 'forn'iing cylinder to complete the shaping of the gutter or trougl'r section.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and 'such' other objects as may hereinafter appear, our invention consistsin the combi nation, constri'ictio'n and arrangements of parts'hereinafter described, and then sought to bedefined in the appended claims, reference beinghad to the" accompanying drawings fornnng a part hereof, and which show merely for the purpose,ofillustrative disclos'l'lrefa preferred embodiment of our invention, it being understood that various changes maybe made in practice Within the scope of the claims, Without digressin'g from our inventive ldea;
In'the draw1ngs Figure 1 represents a; perspective view'of a machine constructed according to our invention, position;
Figr2 .is a transverse vertical section of Fig; 1, theparts beingshown in position be fore the blank'is placed therein, in 'full lines, 1
the dotted line position representing the forming position of the parts;
Fig. 3 is a detail View of the means for operating and locking the beadiifgrod.
Referring now to the drawings, the nu- .meral'l designates the legs or supports, on which is mounted the base member 2 which is shown in the form of a channel and has the trough 3 mounted thereon.
one of'said angle members having the bolts 5 which pass through slots 6' in the channel member 2'h'aving the securing nuts 7 and" Which will hereinafter cured-to the vertical flange of the angle trough by' means of the member 4 ofthe wing nuts and b'o'lts 14, which permit the readyremoval of the member 13in caseof accident;
Secured to the channel member 2 anglemember4 are th'e bracket members 15 Which extend upwardly and pii' otal ly sup port the elongated I These operating levers 16 are pivotall'y con-' nected as at 17 to themember 18 secured to the forming roll '20,
the'forni" of an elongated tube. This form'- ing roll isad'apted' to be moved to'and from the positiOnshown in Fig. 2 of the drawing,
by means of the operating levers 16, soas to the forming roll being in forming This trough is formed of two angle members at and 4',
varyingthe'size ofv the l and the operatinglevers 16 w v between the pairs of spaced lugs19, this member 18 being" which is in operate on a sheet metal blank and press the Secured to the other side of the channel member 2 are the extended arms or bracket members 21 which support the guiding means I with the head 27. This guiding member also has the depending lug or projection 28 adapted to bear against the stop member 29 which may be placed at different positions on said arm or bracket member so as to adjust the position of the guide-members, and limit their movement inwardly. The stop members 29 comprise merely a rod, shaft or pin positioned in one of a number of apertures or holes in said bracket members.
Secured to the lug or projection 28 is the spring 30 which is also secured to a lower portion of the arm or bracket 21, whereby the guide member is normally held toward the trough. The handle 31 is provided thereon so that it may be manually withdrawn. The arm or bracket member 21 is provided with the inclined and extended portion 21 on which the guiding member is mounted, the inclination being at a suitable angle to give the best results.
We mount on the same side of the trough as the guide members, the additional forming element 32, which is in the form of the angle member 33 having the operating arms or levers 34 secured thereto. This additional forming element is hinged to the angle member 4 of the trough by means of a plurality of hinges 35 and has secured thereto, the plurality of curved lugs or wings 36, which pass through suitable slots in the angle member 4 of the trough to a position within the trough to be engaged by the sheet metal blank when pressed downwardly by the forming roll 20. This will throw the operating levers 34 out to a position for convenient manipulation.
The beading rod is loosely mounted in the housing 10 and has the cranks 37 for operation. One of the cranks is provided with the flange 38 which is adapted to be engaged by the hooked lug 39 which is pivoted at 40 to the side of the trough and normally held in locked position as indicated in Fig. 3. This prevents the displacing of the beading rod when inserting the sheet metal blank.
The operation of forming and beading a gutter section will now be explained. Assuming that the parts are in the position shown in full lines in Fig.2, a sheet metal blank of suitable width is inserted with one edge in the groove 12 in the beading rod, the guide members havingbeen withdrawn manually so that the other edge engages in the I rollers 24. The cranks 37 are then manipulated to formthe bead on one edge of the sheet metal blank, and the operating levers 16 are then moved to the dotted line position trough,
of Fig. 2 and full line position in Fig. 1, which forces the sheet metal blank into the causing it to conform to the cross sectional shape of the roll 20. During this operation, the curved lugs or wings 36 are engaged by the sheet metal blank and cause the additional forming element and its operating levers 34 to move outwardly and upwardly so that they may be readily grasped by the operators, who then lift the levers 34, moving'the parts to the dotted line position of Fig. 2, thereby forcing the free edge of the sheet metal blank around the roll 20. The parts are then returned to their full line position in Fig. 2 and the completed guttersection withdrawn, completely beaded and formed. I
As has been stated hereinbefore, the machine is adapted for the formation of Various sizes ofgutter sections and for that purpose, the width of the trough may be varied, by means of the connectiondescribed for adjusting the position of the angle mem ber 4. Spacing blocks 41 are inserted where necessary, and a roll 20 of the proper size is attached to the lever 16, it being understood that the pivotal connection 17 is readily detachable. The guide members 22 are adjusted on the inclined portion 21 of the arm or bracket members 21, so as to accommodate the, variation in width of the sheet metal blank.
It is therefore seen that we have provided I.
a mechanism which is simple in structure and operation, capable of various adjustments to form and bead diiferent sizes of gutter sections. In case the blank buckles about the beading rod, the housing 10 may be readily removed.
