MEANS FOR SECURING ARTIFICIAL TEETH T0 DENTAL PLATES OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed August 1, 1914. Serial No. 854,541.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MALCOLM MiLLER lliAUPIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Securing Artificial Teeth to Dental Plates or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices used in anchoring or fastening artificial teeth or porcelain facings in crown or bridge work; and its object is to provide a staple-shape resilient metallic grip whose transverse bow portion is initially secured to the labial face of the crown or bridge work and whose resilient parallel arms project forwardly from said labial face of the work and engage a narrow parallel-walled cavity in the lingual side of the tooth or facing that is readily positioned on the crown or bridge and firmly cemented to the said tooth or facing; and a further object is to provide said staple-shape anchor with parallel resilient arms whose outer ends are laterally bent into U-shape for seating in a narrow parallel-walled cavity whose bottom is expanded laterally and concaved to more readily seat or accommodate said U-shape ends of the arms and not only enhance the attaching power of the anchoring device together with the cement in said cavity, but they might be used to fasten the tooth or facing without depending on the cement; and another object is to provide an attaching device that enables the ready insertion or setting of a tooth or facing on said arms in a direct line from the front of the mouth so that the upper edge of said tooth or facing shall lie in contact with the overhang ing biting-edge of the crown or bridge and Without danger of fracturing said upper edge of the tooth; and still another object is to provide said narrow parallel-walled cavity in the back'of the tooth or facing that will not weaken the wall or body at either side thereof and capable of firm attachment with the resilient, expansive anchor-arms of the staple-shape device in the crown or bridge.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is an elevation showing the lingual side of a lower-anterior facing having a narrow, parallel-walled cavity for receiving a double-pronged resilient anchor; Fig. 2, a transverse section on line b, b, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of said resilient anchor; and Fig. 4, an assembled section showing said narrow anterior-facing of Figs. 1 and 2, with the resilient parallel anchor-arms engaging its cement-filled cavity, and with said anchor-arms projecting from their almost full-circle bow-portion that is embedded in the bridge.
The anchor adapted for use in connection With the lower anterior tooth or facing C (Fig. l) is composed of an almost full-circle body-portion l and a pair of integral, forwardly-projecting, parallel straight arms2 whose outer ends are bent in outwardlycurved or arc-form 10 (Figs. 3 and 4). Arms 2 are preferably resilient ones so that their said outer ends 10 shall readily seat in the circularly-expanded bottom 9 at the inner end of a deep, narrow passage or parallel-walled contracted cavity 8 made in the tooth or facing C on its lingual side. To further assure the attachment of the tooth or facing in place on the arms 2 ccment 6 is preferably, but not essentiallv used in the cavity 8, (see Fig. 2). The connecting-portion 1 of this anchor is embedded in the bridge B (Fig. 4), or it may be soldered, as desired, and cement 6 may be used, as above stated, to further assure the firm attachment of the tooth or facing to the extending-arms 2, if desired, although the friction-hold of the anchor-arms, under resilient tension, will ordinarily suflice.
I claim An artificial-tooth fastening comprising an almost circular metallic anchoring-portion, parallel, resilient arms extending integrally from said anchoring-portion, and semi-circular clamping-extremities at the outer ends of said arms, said anchoring-por HENRY tion being adapted to be embedded in the labial side of the dental Work and with said semi-circular extremities projecting beyond the outervface thereof fQrIeady fastening- 5 engagement with a cavity or narrow passage having straight parallel side-Walls and a MALCOLM Wi nes s w JOHN ELIAS Copies of this pecent iney be obteined for jive cents eeeh, eddnessing Washington, D.
