UNITED SATES STRAINER FOR PUMP-WELLS.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed August 1, 1917. Serial No. 183,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL DE CHIME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, Mahoning county, and State of Ohio, have invented a new Strainer for Pump-Wells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to strainers and more particularly to strainers for use on hand pumps for use in pumping water from wells.
One object of the invention is to provide a strainer which can be readily attached to pumps of various sizes. Another object is to provide a novel strainer which will allow the pure water to pass through a filter or screen and require the impurities to pass out through a lateral waste passage, thus keeping the main water passage clean and sanitary.
With these general objects in View, my invention will be best understood upon reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the scope of the invention will be pointed out in the appended claim.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strainer constructed in ac cordance with my invention shown applied to a pump; Fig. 2 is partial sectional elevation of the strainer detached from the pump; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of the nipple located at the lower end of the strainer. Throughout these views like characters refer to like parts.
Referring to the drawing in detail, F designates the tubular casing which is adapted to fit at its upper end over the spout of the pump. A bolt B threaded through an opening in said casing engages the pump spout and serves to securely hold the easing on the pump. Near its lower end, the casing is provided with a laterally and downwardly extending funnel shaped portion T which has a small waste outlet at its lower end. The portion T is connected with the casing F by an elbow N. A nipple W preferably of wood is inserted into the lower end of the tubular casing F and is provided with a fine wire screen or filter S. When the nipple is in assembled position, the screen lies adjacent to the elbow N and in such a position that all the impurities arrested by the screen S pass into the lateral funnel shaped portion T and out through the waste outlet at its lower end. The entire device is clean and sanitary and will remain operative in all kinds of weather, in striking contrast to those cases where cloth and rubber are used for filtering.
I claim:
A strainer for hand pump for Wells comprising a unitary tubularv casing consisting of a main portion and an auxiliary waste portion, said main portion being open at its upper end so as to fit over the spout of the pump and being open at its lower end so as to provide an outlet for the water, a nipple of wood located in the outlet of said main portion, said waste portion extending from a point near the lower end of said main portion laterally and downwardly beyond the lower end of said nipple and having a waste outlet at its lower end permanently open and in communication with the interior of said main portion, a screen upon the inner end of said nipple located at the inlet to said waste portion so that the passage of water through said Waste portion will carry the impurities arrested by said screen out through said waste outlet, and a securing bolt passing through a threaded opening in said easing into contact with the pump spout.
