CABLE-DRIVE PULLEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
Application filed February 19, 1918. Seria1No. 218,151.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEY E. SAcKn'r'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Minot, in county of Ward and State of North Dakota, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Cable- Drive Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cable drive pulleys and the object is to provide simple means in a practical form of pulley for preventing the cable from slipping.
The invention consists mainly in a pulley having blocks set radially and transversely in the rim and with inset boxes in which wheels in pairs are mounted in position to receive and hold the cable against slipping.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through one of the blocks on an enlarged scale.
The wheel preferably comprises the hub 1, adapted to be keyed to the body 2, frictionally or otherwise. held on the hub and the rim 3, secured to the periphery of the body portion.
A plurality of blocks 4, are transversely and radially mortised into the rim as shown in Fig. 1, where they are held by keys or other convenient fastening means 5, driven transversely into the rim.
Each block is hollowed out and receives a star-wheel 6, shown in detail in Fig. 3, disposed transversely therein and these wheels are journaled in pairs on pins 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in full lines, and in Fig. 1, in dotted lines.
These star wheels 6, are on either side of a view.
central groove 8, and between the star wheels and groove the cable (not shown) is received and gripped, the wheels yielding to the cable both inwardly and outwardly to grip it across its length to prevent slipping on the drive pulley.
In other words, the wheels give a lateral pinch upon the cable as it lies between them, but the wheels yield readily as the cable leaves the pulley.
One of the advantages of my improved drive pulley is the ease with which any part can be removed and restored or renewed when the occasion may require it; for instance, when becoming worn or broken.
The pulley is simple, easy to construct and is peculiarly effective in performing the functions required of it.
I claim:
1. A cable drive pulley having a circumferential peripheral groove, blocks mortised and secured transversely and radially in the rim of the pulley, and star-Wheels journaled in pairs in the blocks in position to receive and ip the cable, with a space between said wheels less than the width of the peripheral groove in the pulley.
2. A cable drive pulley comprising a hub, body and grooved rim, blocks transversely and radially mortised in the rim, wheels journaled in pairs in the blocks with a space between said wheels smaller than the width of the central peripheral groove of the pulley.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CHARLEY E. SACKETT.
