ROLLING-MILL FOR BENDING ANGLE 0R CHANNEL IRONS INTO DIFFERENT ANGLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,668.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN P. EoKENRoTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rolling-Mill for Bending Angle or Channel Irons into Different Angles, of which the following is a specification.
y invention consists of a rolling mill which is adapted to convert an angle iron of right angular form into one of a different angle, the means employed and the operation thereof being hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a rolling mill embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section thereof.

Referring to the drawings:
1 and 2 designate pairs of guide rollson opposite ends of a suitable bed plate or base, and 3 and 1 designate the housings therefor, all of which in general respects are well known in metal rolling mills.
Intermediate of said rolls 3 and 1 is the housing 5, in the upper part of which is swiveled the screw or screw shaft 6 on which is fitted the traveler nut 7. which is formed with gudgeons 8 which extend laterally therefrom and are mounted in the rocker or rocking block 9. which latter is formed with gudgeons 10 which extend laterally therefrom and are mounted on the side members of the housing 5.
In the rocker 9 are mounted the journals 11 and 12 respectively of the upper ends of 3 represents a top or plan view the rolls 13 and 14, which as most plainly shown in Fig. 4 are set in inclined or oblique positions, side by side in vertical direction substantially parallel with each other.
On the lower end of the roll 13 is the journal 15 which is mounted in the rocker or rocking block 16 which has on its sides the gudgeons 17 which are mounted in the pillow blocks 18. the latter being supported on and bolted or otherwise secured to the bed plate of the mill.
On the lower end of the roll 14 is the journal 19 which is mounted in the rocker or rocking block 20 which has on its sides the gudgeons 21 which are mounted on the cars 22 of the yokes 23, the latter acting as a pulley block being supported on and bolted or otherwise secured to the bed plate of the mill.
The feet 24 of the yokes 23 are vertically slotted to receive the securing bolts 25 of the yokes, the slots being elongated, whereby the yoke-s may be moved to the right or left. when the block 20 follows the same, and so the roll 14 may be adjusted to and from the roll 13 to change its inclination and so set and adjust its peripheral working face to that of said roll 13. The roll 14 is shorter than the roll 13 whereby the bottom flange of the bar of angle iron to be bent can pass under the end of said roll 14, while the side flange of said bar can pass between the two rolls in contact therewith as shown in Fig. 4. As the yokes are open being somewhat of U-shape, the bar of angle iron can pass through them in their passage in part under one roll, and in part between the two rolls.
The screw shaft 6 and the connections intermediate of the same and the rolls serve to change the angularity of the latter without requirin a separate device for each roll to effect suc change.
e operation is as follows A bar of angle iron is passed between the pair of rolls 1, and guided by the rollers 26 on the bed plate is passed between the rolls 13 and 14 1n frictional contact therewith, whereby owing to the inclination of the latter, the side flange of the iron is pressed between said rolls and so bent from a right angle to an acute angle or inclination. as shown in Fig. 4. Then the bar is guided by the rollers 27 to the pair of rolls 2 between the base flange of the bar, while the inclined flange of the bar runs freely on the side of the upper member of the pair of rollers, as shown in Fig. 5, the bar thus being directed from the mill.
The members of each pair of rolls 26 and 27 are adjustable to and from each other by means of the series of openings 28 in the frame of the mill to receive the axles of said rolls relatively to the width of the angle or channel iron passing through the mill.
By adjusting the traveler nut to the right, it is possible to change the right angle of a bar into an obtuse angle, and this may be accomplished as in converting said right angle into an acute angle during the passing of the bar through the mill.
If it is desired to change the angles of bars of channel irons, the bar is passed through the rolls and then reversed, and again passed through the rolls, and thus both side flanges or sides are bent forming either acute or obtuse angles, as will be apparent on reference to Fig. 7, or if desired, one angle may be made acute, and the other angle may be made obtuse.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a rolling mill, a pair of bending rolls, a rocker block on the frame of the mill having the axes of both rolls mounted thereon, a traveling nut with which said block is rotatably connected, and a screw shaft on which said nut is fitted whereby both rolls may be simultaneouslyadjusted by-the operation of said rocker block.
2. In a rollin mill, a pair of bending rolls, a rocker b ock mounted on the frame of the mill and having the upper axes of both rolls journaled in said block, a screw shaft on said frame of the mill, a traveling nut on said shaft, and gudgeons on said nut being pivotally mounted on said rocker whereby the operation of said screw both rolls may be simultaneously changed together in angularity.
3. In a rolling mill, a pair of bending rolls of diiferential length, rocker bearings Copies of this patent may be obtained for for the upper and lower axes of said rolls, and pillow blocks on the frame of the mill in which the bearings for the lower axes of said rolls are mounted, one of said pillow blocks bein of open form adapted to permit an angu ar bar to pass through the same in reaching said rolls and leaving the same.
4. In a rolling mill, a pair of bending rolls disposed substantially parallel with each other, a single rocker support for the upper axes of said rolls, separate rocker supports for the lower axes of said rolls, a single screw shaft on the frame of the mill, and a traveling nut on said shaft, said nut having thereon gudgeons which are rotata bly mounted in said single rocker support.
5. In a rolling mill, a pair of bending rolls, a single rocker support for the upper axes of said rolls, separate rocker supports for the lower axes of said rolls, a single screw shaft on the frame of the mill, a traveling nut on said shaft, said nut having thereon gudgeons which are rotatably mounted in said single rocker support, and guide rollers on the frame in the advance and rear of said bending rolls, the bed plate of said frame having therein a series of transversely extending openings in which said guide rollers may be correspondingly adjusted.
6. In a rolling mill, a pair of bending rolls, a rocker block on the frame of the mill and havin the upper axes of said rolls journaled in said block, rocker blocks on said frame having the lower axes of said rolls mounted therein, a pillow block on which one of the lower rocker blocks is mounted, and yokes having eyes on which the other lower block is mounted, said yokcs being of open form admitting anangle bar to be rolled to pass through said yokes in reaching and leaving said rolls.
