Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM F. ZIMMER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaping-Machines, and do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings forming part of same,to be a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention and the best mode contemplated to apply the principle thereof so as to distinguish it from other inventions and to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains or with which it is most nearly connected to make, construct,
and use the same.
This invention relates primarily to a shap ing machine and more particularly to a feeding mechanism for feeding the work relative to the reciprocations of the tool.
This invention contemplates as its primar 1 object, a simple and eilicient feeding mechanism which can be easily manipulated.
Another object is to provide a means for readily altering the timing of the feed relative to the backward stroke of the cutting tool and to the direction of the feed.
Other objects will be apparent from, and are incorporated in the annexed drawings and in the following description, which sets forth in detail, certain contrivances embodying means constituting however, but one of the various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
The novelty of the invention will be readily understood from the drawings, which show a construction for practising the invention in its preferred form, and from the following description thereof, the invention being more specifically pointed out and distinctly claimed in the claims anneXed to said description.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the bull gear 1 is rotatably mounted in the frame 2. The lever 3 is suitably pivoted to the ram 4: andis hinged at 5 to the link 6, which link is pivotally mounted at 7 inthe frame 2. An oscillatory movement is im parted to the lever 3 from the bull gear 1 by any well known means. Upon the forward part of the main frame 2 is slidably mounted the cross-head 8, which is secured to said frame by means of the strap 9 and bolts 10. A cross-slide or saddle 11 is slidably arranged upon said cross-head 8 in the usual manner, for the purpose of moving the work relative to the cutting tool. The parts hereinbefore described can be of any well known construction ,used in shaping machines.
The bull gear 1 has secured to its hub 12, a flange or plate 13 by means of the bolts so that said flange 18 will rotate with said bull gear in the direction of the arrows shown on Figs. 1 and 3. The shaft 14, which is arranged in the usual way in the bull gear 1, is provided with a bush 15, upon which is loosely mounted an eccentric disk 16. A latch 17 pivotally mounted at 18 in the bull gear and flange 13 is arranged to connect said eccentric disk 16 with said flange 13, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. Two notches l9 and 20 are provided in said eccentric disk 16 so that the disk may be connected to the flange 13 in two different positions diametrically opposite to each other. The spring 21 isconnected at one end to the flange 13, and at the other end to the projection 22 of the latch 17 so as to always draw said latch in a direction to force same into engagement with either the notch 19 or 20 of the eccentric disk.
The eccentric rod s3 is rotatably mounted upon said eccentric disk and is held fromv end-wise movement by the steel plate 24. The bush 15 is provided with a shoulder25 so that the distance from the shoulder 25 to the face 26 of the flange 13 is slightly greater than the width of the eccentric disk 16 and steel flange 24:, so as to permit said eccentric disk and flange to rotate upon said bush 15. A clamp nut 27 is provided upon the shaft 14C to clamp the bush 15. to the hub of the bull gear 1.

An outer casing or bearing 28 is secured to the main frame 1 and has arranged therein, a plunger 29, which is forced to the extreme right-hand position as shown in Fig. 2 by the flat spring 30which is riveted at 31 to said outer casing 28. A leather pad 32 is also provided upon said flat spring 30, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The eccentric rod 23 is pivotally connected at 33 to the feed rocker 34. Said feed rocker is rotatably mounted in the main frame 2 and held from endwise movement by the groove 35- and screw 36. The feed rocker 34 is provided with a screw 37 which is mounted to rotate transversely to the pivotal center and which is operated by the small hand-wheel 38. A nut 39 cooperates with said screw 37 and is provided with a trunnion 40 and is guided by the groove 41 in the feed rocker 34.
I The friction link 42 is pivotally mounted upon said trunnion 40. A connecting rod 43 is arranged between the two parts of said link 42 and is operated by means of the frictional resistance offered by the leather pads 44 which are provided upon each of the two parts of said friction link 42. The connecting rod 43 is connected at the other end to the oscillating plate 45, which is rotatably mounted upon the stud 46 secured in the crosshead 8 by means of the nut 47.
The frictional connection between the link 42 and the rod 43 is to permit changing the position of the crosshead 8 upon the frame 2-without disconnecting or disorganizing the The friction provides an automatic means to compensate for the difference in the distance between the oscillating plate 45 and the pivot 40. The rod 43 is arranged beneath the pivot 40 and between the rocker 34 and screw 37 so that when the distance between the plate 45 and pivot 40 is the shortest, said rod can project beyond the frictional contact without interference with the oscillatory movement of said rocker 34. The frictional connection further provides a safety means to prevent breakage of the feeding mechanism should an obstruction be put in the path of the feeding' motion of the cross-slide.

The ratchet gear 50 is an internal ratchet and is preferably integral with the feed gear 51. The'feed pinion 52 engages with said feed gear 51v and is connected to the cro ssfeed screw 53, which screw engages the nut portion 54 in the cross-slide 11, whereby said cross-slide can be moved relatively to the tool. The pawl 48 is provided with three flats 55,56 and 57. These flats are arranged to cooperate with the flat spring the cross-slide 11.
58 so that when the flat 5 6 is in contact with the spring as shown in the drawlng, the pawl 48 engages the internal gear 50 to urge the same in one direction and when the/flat 55 is brought in contact with said spring, the other end of the pawl 48 urges the in ternal gear 50 in the opposite direction and consequently reverses the feeding motion of The flat 57 is for the purpose of maintaining the pawl 48 in a neutral or non-feeding position. The flat spring 58 is secured at 59 to the plate 45, and a pin 60 is also provided in said plate 45 to make said spring efi'ective. The plate 45 is provided with stops 61 and. .62 which cooperate with the stop 63 on the feed screw bearing 64. The feed screw bearing 64 is secured to the crosshead 8 by means of the bolts 65 and forms the outer bearing for the feed screw 53. v V
The stops 61, 62 and 63 are arranged to limit the movement of the oscillating plate 45 and act only after the position of the cross-head 8 has been altered upon the frame 2. When the position of the oscillating plate 45 has been changed and the feed rocker 34 is operating, the previous length of the link 42 and rod 43 maybe too long: then the stop 62 will shorten the distance. In a similar manner the stop 61 will lengthen the distance. g
The operation of the device is as follows: The bull gear 1 is driven from any suitable source and moves the cutting tool back and forth across the work. The plate 13 rotates with said bullgear 1 and by means of the pawl 17 rotates the eccentric disk 16 which imparts to the eccentric rod 23, a vertical reciprocating motion. The eccentric rod oscillates the feed rocker 34 thereby imparting a reciprocating motion to the feed rod 43 to oscillate the plate 45. The pawl 48 engages with the internal gear and moves the feed screw to feed the cross slide 11 in one direction. The spring 58 permits the .feed pawl to disengage from the internal gear on its backward stroke and forces the pawl into engagement on the forward stroke of the connecting rod. To move the cross slide 11 in the opposite direction the handle 49 ismoved to the right from that shown in Fig. 3 so that the flat 55 cooperates with the spring 58, thereby bringing the other end of the feed pawl into engagement with the feed gear. By this change, however, the feed of the cross slide 11 will be during the forward stroke of the cutting tool, or in other words, during the cutting action. To change the feeding motion to time with the return of the tool, the plunger 29 is pressed to engage the projection 22 of the latch 17 thereby disconnecting the latch 17 from the notch 19. Then quickly releasing the plunger 29 permits the latch 17 which rotates with the bull gear to engage notch 20' and thereby alter the eccentricity relative to the backward and forward strokes of the cutting tool. The amount of feed can be varied by moving the nut 39 on the feed rocker by the hand-wheel 38, toward or from the cen ter. As this nut moves away from the center, the movement of the feed pawl is increased and consequently increases the feed. The rotary movement of the eccentric 16 when released suddenly from the latch, is temporarily checked by the leather pad 32 forced against theplate 24 by the plunger 29, until the eccentric is again engaged by said latch.
Having described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a feedingmechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric provided with two abutments diametrically opposit-e, a latch mounted on said gear and ar ranged to engage either one of the abutments of said eccentric, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
2. In a feeding mechanism fora shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, a member mounted concentric with said gear and having an eccentric periphery, two abutments provided diametrically opposite in said member, a latch mounted onsaid gear and connected to said member by either of said abutment-s to revolve same in synchronism with said gear, and connections between said member and screw to intermittently feed said'slide.
3. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, a member mounted concentric with said gear comprising a concentric part and aneccentric part, two abutments diametrically opposite arranged on the concentric part of said member, a latch mounted on said gear and arranged to engage'either one'of said abutments, and connections between the eccentric part of said member and screw to intermittently feed said slide. 4. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments provided diametrically opposite in said eccentric, a latch mounted on said gear and connected to said eccentric by either of said abutments to rotate same, means to disconnect said eccentric and gear during rotation to permit engagement with the opposite abutment to alter the relative positions to each other, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
5. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric provided with two abutments diametrically opposite, a latch to engage one of the abutments in said eccentric to revolve same in synchronism withsaid gear, means to disengage said latch, means to hold said eccentric stationary to permit engagement of said latch with the opposite abutment, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
6. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments diametrically opposite provided in said eccentric, a latch rotatably mounted on said gear and engaging one of said abutments, a spring to maintain said latch in engagement withsaid eccentric, a stationary bearing, a plunger mounted therein to effect the disengaging of said latch. and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
' 7. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments diametrically opposite provided therein, a latch mounted on said gear and engaging one ofsaid abutments, a plunger so arranged as to bemoved into the path of said latch to disengage same, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
8. In a feedingmechanism for a shaping machine, thecombination of a work slide, a screw tofeed same, a gear, an eccentric provided with abuti'nents diametrically opposite, a latch mounted on said gear to engage one of the abutments in said eccentric to revolve same in synchrouism with said gear, a stationary bearing, a plunger arranged therein to be moved into the path of said latch to disengage same, a spring to maintain said eccentric inoperative until the opposite abutment is engaged by said latch. and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
9. In a feedingmechanism for a shaping machine, the-combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric provided with abutments diametrically opposite, a latch mounted on said gear to engage one of the abutments in said eccentric to revolve the same synchronously with said gear, a plunger arranged to trip said latch. to disconnect same from said eccentric, means operated by said plunger to hold said eccentric inoperative until the opposite abutment is engaged by said latch, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
10. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments arranged therein diametrically opposite, a latch mounted on said gear to engage one of said abutments to revolve said gear and eccentric synchronously, means to disconnect said latch from one abutment to engage the opposite abutment to alter the relative position of said eccentric and gear, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
11. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments arranged therein diametrically opposite, a latch mounted on said gear to engage one of said abutments to revolve said gear and eccentric synchronously, means to disconnect said latchfrom one abutment to permit its engagement with the opposite abutment to alter the relative position of said eccentric and gear, means to maintain said eccentric stationary while disengaged from said latch, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
12. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a work slide, a screw to feed same, a gear, an eccentric, two abutments arranged therein diametrically opposite, a spring controlled latch mounted in said gear to engage one of said abutments to revolve said gear and eccentric synchronously, means comprising a spring controlled plunger to disconnect said latch from one abutment to permit its engagement with the opposite abutment to alter the relative position of said eccentric and gear, means controlled by said plunger to maintain said eccentric stationary until the opposite abutment is engaged by said latch, and connections between said eccentric and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
13. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a frame, a work slide adjustably arranged thereon, a feed screw to feed said slide, a gear rotatably mounted in said frame, an eccentric arranged adjacent to said gear,- means to alter the relative position of said eccentric and gear, a feed rocker pivotally mounted in said frame, a trunnion mounted in said feed rocker to be adjustable in one direction only from the center, and connections between said trunnion and screw to intermittently feed said slide.
14. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping ,machine, the combination of a frame, a work slide adjustably arranged thereon, a feed screw to feed said slide, a gear rotatablymounted in said frame, an. eccentric arranged adjacent to said gear, means to alter the relative position of said eccentric and gear, a feed rocker pivotally mounted in said frame, an adjusting screw rotatably mounted in said feed rocker, a trunnion operated nections between said connecting rod and feed screw to intermittently feed said slide.

In a feeding mechanism for ashaping machine, the combination of a frame, a work slide adjustably arranged "thereon, a feed screw tofeed said slide, a gear rotatably mounted in said frame, a feed rocker,means operated bysaid gear to, oscillate said feed rocker, an ad ustmg screw rotatably mounted in said feed rocker, a trunnion operated toward and away from the center of said feed rocker by said adjusting screw, a connecting link arranged upon said trunnion between said feed rocker and adjusting screw, a connecting rod in frictional contact with said linkv and arranged to project between said feed rocker and screw and toy one side of said trunnion, and connections between said connecting rod and feed screw to intermittently feed saidslide.
16. In a feeding mechanism for a shaping machine, the combination of a frame, a work slide adjustably arranged thereon,- a feed screw. to feed said slide, a feed gear connected to-said screw, a second gear engaging therewith provided with an internal gear, a pawl to engage said internal gear to intermittently feed said slide in either direction, a gear rotatab'lyinounted in said frame, a feed rocker, an eccentric operated-by said gcarto oscillate saidfeed rocker, means to vary the-relative position of said eccentric and gear, and connections between said feed rocker and pawl comprising a friction connecting rod.
