LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FLOYD O. Hmns and \VLLLix c'rox MILLs, citizens of the United States, residing at Milan, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lampburners of the central draft tube type, and has forits object to provide improved means for supplying air for combustion or vaporization of the kerosene or other fluid fuels.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for supporting and adjusting the wick, and holding the mantle and chimney in position.
'A further ob ect of the invention is to generally improve the structure of such burners as will more fully appear from the following description and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure l is a central vertical section of the burner.
Fig. 2 is a similar section at a right angle to Fig. 1.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are sections on the line 33, 44, and 55, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Figs. 6 and 7 are details of fastening devices to hold the parts of the burner together.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 indicates an inverted conical or flared base which screws as at 2 into the neck of the font 3. At the upper end of this base is a cylindrical part 3. Within this cylinder is a circular shell 4 the lower part 5 of which is conical, and has at its lower edge a horizontal rim 6 with an upstanding flange 7 at the edge thereof. This shell or member 4 is inserted in the cylinder 3 and rests on the angle or shoulder '8. The upper end of the shell 4 is a cylindrical outer wick tube indicated at 9, which has an outstanding flange 10 at the top. The member 4 is held in place by rivets 11 engaging inclined surfaces 12 on the flange 7 when the member 4 is set in place and turned slightly.
A central draft tube 13 is disposed within the shell 4 and is spaced therefrom, being supported on a cross air pipe or tube 14 which extends horizontally through the base 1 and the draft tube 13, and which has a hole 15 opening into the draft tube, so that air entering through the tube 14 may pass up and out through the tube 13 to the top of the wick.
A globe holder 16 is riveted to a cylindrical flange 17 depending from a ring plate 18, and the flange 17 is also riveted to a band 19 which fits upon or around cylinder 3, where it is held by the rivets 11 which engage in bayonet slots 20 in the band 19, the rivets 11 being set in the cylinder 3.
The upper tube 9 of the member 4 projects upwardly through the central opening 21 in the ring plate 18, and this plate has holes 22 therein, and the flange 17 and band 19 have registering air holes Air entering through these holes passes up inside and outside of the mantle 24 through the openings 21 and 22. This mantle 24 is supported by a wire 26 and a ring 25 which latter rests on the plate 18 where it is held by lugs 27.
A wick-raising tube 28 slides up and down on the central draft tube 13. This tube 28 has slots 29 in opposite sides thereof, to pass over the cross tube 14, and it is adjusted by a gear 31 engaging a rack 30 on the tube. The gear 31 is mounted on a shaft 32 supported by brackets 33 projecting from the tube 14, and operated by a hand wheel 24.
The wick 35 fits over the tube 28 and has its lower end split as indicated at 36 and 37 to pass over the tube 14, and also split as at 38 to pass over the gear 31 and rack 30. A cap 39 fits in the top of the central air tube 13 and is perforated as indicated at 40.
It will be seen that the flow of air is through the tubes 14 and 13 to the interior of the mantle. Additional air is supplied through the openings 21, 22, and 23, to support the combustion of the oil at the top of the wick and to cause incandescence of the mantle. The upper part of the burner and the mantle supported thereby can be lifted off by turning the same to disengage the rivets 11 from the bayonet slots 20 in the band 19. This also permits the shell 4 and the tube 13 to be slipped out if desired.
