RAIL TIE AND FASTENER.
Application filed January 9, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEFAN REVAY, a sub} ject of the King of Hungary, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Rail Ties and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a form of railway tie and means for securing rails thereon which is simple in construction and possesses great strength as well as permitting the HSSQHL bling and disassembling of the structure at will Wlmnever desired.
A further object of the device is to provide a ready means for detachably securing rails in their operative positions upon the ties of a roadbed without the necessity of perforating the rails, it only being required to employ a wrench in applying or detaching the device.

My invention broadly consists of means for supporting railway rails such as 10 upon the roadbed 11 in track formation and comprises metal ties 12 of I-beam form with the rail detachably secured thereon by means of locking members 13.
These locking members 13 are in the form of complemental plates 14 having transverse shoulders 15 at one end thereof and with a hook 16 laterally projecting from one end of such shoulder, the body of each plate being provided with a square perforation 17. The rail such as 10 is mounted upon the top 18 of the tie 12, transversely thereof in the usual manner, and fish plates 19 having base flanges 20- are oppositely engaged with the rail 10 with the flanges 20 thereof seated upon the base flanges 21 of the rail and with the upper edge portions 22 of the fish plates seated beneath the tread 23 of the rail.

mentally formed as heretofore described, a pair of said members 13 are arranged in engagement With each other flatly contacting the web 23' of the tie 12 and with the hooks 16 of the locking members projecting upwardly through slots 24 in the top 18 of the tie While the angular end portions 25 ofthe hooks engage within sockets 26 formed in the edges of the fish plate flan cs 20.
A bolt 27 having a square shank is pd sitioned through the perforations 17 of the locking members and also through a squared opening 28 in the tie web 23'. and. is provided with a lock nut 29 threaded upon its outer end for retaining the locking members upon the tie 12. The locking members 113 are securely held in engagel'nent with each other and mounted upon the tie 12 by the bolt 27, whereby the hook 16 firmly locks the fish plates 19 in contact with the rail 10 thereby preventing any movement of the rail under traflic conditions. It will be seen that by removing the bolt 27, the locking members 13 may be readily released permitting free movement of the rail 10. With my device it is unnecessary to perforate the railway rail so that when my form of tie with its locking members, bolts and fish plates is provided. the railway line may be quickly constructed with the use of only a wrench, while the line may also be readily disassembled by the use of such an implement. It will be seen that the squared perforations 17 and 28 are adapted to main tain the bolt 27 against turning during the operative rotation of the nut 29 thereon. This device is serviceable in connection with the laying of temporary tracks such as those employed for army use and for mine and similar pur oses.
