To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that 1"., EUGNE FRANgoIs SUTER, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful improve-- ments in Hair Curlers or Rollers, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to an improved hair curler or roller .for use in connection with dressing-natural hair on the head so as to permanently wave the. same.
lln dressing hair for permanent waving it is requisite to secure the same in tightly lwound coils for subsequent treatment, and
especially near theroots, where the'hair is thickest and most abundant and diiiicult to wave effectively, the object of my present invention being to provide an improved compact and reliable curler or roller specially adapted for this purpose.
Such improved hair curler or roller consls'ts of a loose-sleeve which has a reduced neck portion at one end, and is mounted on arelatively fixed spindle whereon it rotates,
`and is controlled by" a lratchet and pawl mechanism so that such sleeve can be turned lon. the spindle in one direction only.. rlhe .spindle is provided with a slotted extension that projects vbeyond the reduced neck portion of the sleeve, which is plugged at its outer end, and preferably -contains a suitable lubricant, to prevent corrosion of the curler. 1
The hair to be dressed is secured near its roots to the slotted extension of the spindle,
and is coiled around pand secured to the sleeve. VThe curler is then firmly held by the slotted extension while the sleeve is rotated so as to tightenl the hair coiled thereon, the ratchet mechanism controlling the sleeve preventing the tension being relaxed, while the reduced neck portion of the sleeve coilsthe hair most closely near the roots, where it is thickest and diflicult of access, so enabling the whole length of hair so coile/d'to be eectively dressed withr a fine permanentv wave. y
My invention is further described with reference to the-` accompanying drawings,
wherein similar reference numerals indicate like parts.
VFigure l, is an external view of a hair curler or roller made according to my present lnvention, and' Fig. 2, 1s a sectional view.
thereof in plan, drawn to a larger scale. l Figs. 3, 4:, 5, 6 and.7, are detail views portion 2, of the slee-ve, is formed by a.
separate tube which is provided with ratchet teeth 2a, at one end as shown at Fig. 3,*and is mountedgon the spindle 3, so that its opposite end abuts on the boss or extension 4, formed on on'e end of such spindle, see Figs. 2 an 5. The ratchet teeth 2a, are engaged by 6, formed in the spindle 3, as shown at Fig. 4, such detent being held up to the ratchet teeth 2a, by a -spring 7, arranged on the spindle 3, between a sliding collar 8, and a xed collar 9, as indicated at Figs. 2 and 5. rllhe sleeve 1, is tapered at one end so as to fit over the tube forming the reduced neck portion 2', to which it is brazed or otherwise secured so as to inclose the ratchet teeth 2a, and the adjacent parts of the spin-4 dle 3, and to prevent corrosion ofthesame. The sleeve 1 is sealed at -its outerend l, as indicated at Fig. 2, and preferably -contains a suitable lubricant.
The extension 4, of the spindle is slotted laterally with an inclined slot 4a, and is re-l cessed or curved as indicated at 4", Figs. 5
and 7, so as to facilitate binding the hair ratchet mechanism controlling. the sleeve 1, an odd number of teeth 2a, is preferably detentI 5, which works in a slot employed .in conjunction with a double actl ing detent, such as thedetent 5, illustrated.
ll claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patenti 1y A hair curler or; roller for use in permanently waving hair comprising a loose sleeveprovided with a reduced neck portion at one end,l and a spindle Whereon said'sleeve is mounted so that said neck portion abnts onV a boss or extension at one end of said spindle, incombination with a spring con-v trolled -ratchet mechanism, which is completely in'closed by saidl sleeve, and is arj ranged so as to hold said sleeve on said spindle, while allowing of the relative rotation thereof in one direction only.
2. A hair Vcurler or roller'adapted for use in permanently waving hair, comprisinga sleeve that is furnished with internal ratchet teeth, and comprises a reduced neck portion l With a tapered tubular extension that is sealed at its outer end, said sleeve being mounted loose on a spindle .in combination With a spring controlled detentK arranged so as to engage said ratchet teeth, and a boss or extension on said spindle that projects beyond, and forms an abutment for said sleeve. y f
3. A hair curler or roller adapted for use in permanently Waving hair, comprising a sleeve With a reduced neck portion formed by a narrow end tube that is furnished with an odd number of ratchet teeth and"carrie a tapered tubular extension, closed at its outer end and arranged so as to inclose said ratchet teeth, said sleeve being mounteddooee on said spindle in operable combination with a spring controlled double acting detenty so as to turn in one direction only, a boss or projection on said spindle that extends beyond and forms an abutment for thefsnid neck of said. sleeve, and a llateralinc/lined. slot formed in said boss substantially as hereinbefore described.
