Application filed May 1, 1917. Serial No. 165,732.
usually requiring the use of several instru-l ments.
Another object of the invention is to provide a common form of rule with attachments, by means of which the same is adapted for use as a 'IF-square, miter, circle inscriber, lumber gage, and for various other uses.
A further object of the invention is to provide a commonrule, with attachments to convert the same into a compass capable of inscribing circles of various diameters.
The above and additional objects as well as the nature, arrangement and operation of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description and accompanying drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the complete device.
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section on line 3--3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In thel preferred form of my invention I :employ a common rule or scale bar 1 having the usual graduation 2 marked thereon. One end of the bar 1 is detachably secured to the head portion 3. The
said head portion 3 is preferably triangular in shape and is provided with the flat face` 4 and the converging sides or ends 5 and 6. A point or spur 7 is formed on the under side of the head 3, and serves as the centering point when the device is used as av compass to inscribe circles. The opposite face of the head 3, is somewhat enlarged and is provided with a threaded aperture Specification o Letters fatnt.
ratenteuinay ai, isis;
in which asuitable set screw 8 is engaged. Vhen engaged in the aperture as described, the threaded end of the setscrew is adapted to protrude into the recess 9, formed in the fiat face 4 of the head portion.
In assembling the parts described, an end of the bar 1 is inserted in the recess 9 and is retained therein by engagement with the set screw 8.
A slide or clamp member 10 is provided, which consists in its preferred form, of an oblong piece of metal, either a casting or otherwise, and is provided with an upturned end 11. The member 10 may be a solid piece of metal or may be formed with the apertures l2 for the purpose of economizing material when malking the same. A spur 13 is formed on one face of the slide 10 and is positioned intermediate the sides thereof and nearer the upturned end 11. A cam lever 14 is pivotally secured to the opposite face of the slide 10 at a suitable distance from the upturned end 11 and is adapted to cooperate with the latter.
When the head 3 alone is attached to the bar l the device may be used as an ordinary rule, miter, or a small T-square. By attaching the slide 10, the device is adapted for use as a lumber gage and circle inscriber, and other purposes.
To use the device as a compass to inscribe circles of the desired diameter, the slide 10 is associated with the scale -bar in such a manner that the upturned end of the slide engages one edge of the scale bar and the cam lever 14, engages the opposite side, this lbeing clearly shown in the drawings. By
moving the lever 14 to an inoperative position, the slide 10 can be adjusted along the scale bar with respect tothe head 3 to regulate the circumference of the circle. In forming the circle the spur 7 fixes the center of the circle and forms the pivot around which the clamp or slide l0 is moved.
Although I have described the exact construction of the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact material, construction and arrangement specified but may resort to such changes as may be desirable and come Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A device as described, including a head hollovved out to form a recess, va scale bar having one end secured in said recess, a spur formed on said head, an elongated plate sldable along'said bar, and provided With 10 an upturned end engaging one edge thereof,
a locking member pivoted on said plate and engaging the opposlte edge of the bar to clamp the latter against sald upturned end and a spur carried by said plate.
