Application. filedJannary 20;:19r17. Serial No. 143,439.
To all whom itmag concern:
Be*it knewn that'I, WILLIAM :B. AnnunsoN, a citizen ofthe Unitedfstates, residing at Ghicagmflin the countyofGookandState of: Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Corner-Brackets for Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is aspecification.
My. invention. relates to cornen brackets for bed bottoms whereby to connect the side rails of the frameto the end rails of such structures. 1
One of the objects of my invention is to generally improve devices of i this character whereby to reduce the cost of production; to increase the stre-ngth; improve the appearance, and to produce convenient means whereby the height of the end rails, above the side rails, of the frame, may conveniently be varied by changing the length of the tubes employed to join the two members of the bracket.
Other and further objects of my inven tion will become readily apparent, to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the corner bracket, showing fragments of the side and end rails of the frame connected thereto and a piece of the spring fabric in place.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the bracket.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bracket.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
The bracket consists of two members and interconnecting parts or tubes.
The top member 5 is, preferably, a casting for connection with an end rail, which may take the form of an angle-iron bar, as shown, and the member 7, which is also preferably a separate casting, for connection with the side rail 8, which is shown to be of tubular form is, preferably, elliptical in cross section, with its greatest diameter in a vertical plane. This shape improves the appearance of the structure and distributes the metal tothe best advantage to resist the greatest strain which is exerted in vertical planes.
The member 5 is provided with an angular part 9 having undercut angularly-disposed ribs, 10 and 11, to overlie the end of the angularly disposed flanges, or members of the end rail, to provide a smooth finish where the joint is made. Extending laterally and inwardly fromtheniember 5, and of: the endzrail 6, to whiclrit is connected, is aplate 12, which underlies the horizontally disposed flange 13 of the angle bar and isconnectedto the verticalfia-nge 14, as by rivets 15, or the like. Projecting at, an angle tothe horizontal plane and constituting an integral part of the plate 12, is a socket 16to receive the membenconnecting necting tube 17. Another socket 19 projects.
horizontally from the member 7 to receive the preferably tubular side rail 8.
Spaced apart from the socket 16 of the member 5, and projecting at substantially the same angle, is another socket 20, for a connecting tube 21. A corresponding socket 28, projects upwardly from the member 7 for accommodation of the other end of the connecting tube 21. The sockets 19 and 23 are joined together by' a webbed plate 241, which rests on the bed frame.
The length of the connecting tubes 17 and 21, determines the height that the end rail 6 is to be located above the side rail 8, so that to vary the height, or distance of separation between these rail members, it is only neces sary to change the length of the connecting tubes 17 and 21. The outer end of the bracket member 5 is provided with an inturned lip 25 to which the selvage border 26 ofthe spring fabric may be connected, as by rivets 27, or the like. The spring fabric 28 is connected at intervals to the end rails, as by helical springs 29, as usual in such structures'.
By constructing my corner bracket, in the manner described, wherein an end rail member may be joined to a side rail member by tubes of varying length, bed bottoms, in which the separation between the side and end rails difler in extent, and of which there are a large variety, may be produced without any change in the character of the bracket members except in the length of the tubes which connect these members together, thus saving the cost and inconvenience of carrying in stock special corner brackets for each type of bed bottoms.
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. In a bed bottom frame the combination with a side rail and an end rail, of a corner bracket, for joining the rails together, comprising a top member having a part for connection with the end rail, and an outwardly projecting part, to which to connect the marginal border of the spring fabric to be connected to the frame, and a part for connection with an end rail thereof; a bottom bracket member, having a part for connection with the side rail and a part projecting outwardly into substantially the vertical plane with the borderconnecting part of the upper member, and means, in the vertical plane of the side rail and other means in the vertical plane of the border connectingmember, to connect the two bracket members together.
2. A corner bracket for a bed bottom frame comprising two separable members, each having a part for connecting the side and end rails of a frame and an outwardly projecting part, one for the selvage border of the wire fabric and the other for support upon the side rail of a bed and two substantially parallel members for connecting said bracket members together.
3. In combination with a bed frame having an angular end rail and a tubular side rail, of a two part bracket, for joining the rails one above the other, one part having a tubular socket for engagement with the side rail and an angularly disposed socket to receive a connecting tube, the other part having a flange to overlie the abutting end of the angular end rail and a socket angularly disposed to receive the connecting tube whereby to connect the rails together with the end rail above the side rail.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
