LOUIS H. MEYER OF LAKE PARK, IO\VA.
EXPLOSIV E-ENGINB Applicationfiled November 23, 1916.
To all whom it met concern;
Bel'h known that I, LOUIS 1'1, Marian, a CILIZBll-Of-tllfi United-,States residing at Lalte;iPai'lc, in ;the county of, Dickinson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and nsetulimprovements in Explosive-Engines; j and. I do; hereby; declare the follow- 1ng; tobe a full, olear and-exaet descrip- ,tlOlt*(Jf- -tllwillYBllbl0lt such as willenable othersskilledin=theart to which it appernuns. to- .make-andjuseitheisame.
This 1 n ,veuti9n'-has1-= for its objeceto provide an improyed.-,explosive engine ofathe ,twogeyole ftype incl udingpa, novel pump or Figurei'l':repronentsrazhonizqntabsectional view through the improved explosiveen gine,
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view theretli'rough in the plane of the axis of the compression cylinder,
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional View through the engine in the plane of the axis of the engine cylinder, and
Fig. i represents an end elevation of the engine and compressor cylinders.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a base, upon which is supported a horizontally disposed cylinder 6, having the usual Water jacket providing the water chamber 7. A piston 8 is reciproeably mounted in the cylinder 6 and is connected with a piston rod 9, to which is attached a cross head 10, slidably supported in guides 11 positioned upon the base 5. A connecting rod 12 is connected with the cross head 10 and with the crank pin 13 of the crank shaft 14. which latter is supported in suitable bearings mounted upon the base 5 at the end of the latter opposite the cylinder 6. Fly wheels 15 are preferably secured to the crank shaft 14-.
A compressor cylinder 16 is formed intogral with the engine cylinder 6, and is also provided with a Water chamber 17 commu- Specification of Letters Patent.

Theorank \\':tltll with relation to the direction of rotation either-rank shaft 1.4, of the crank pin 13 .of the engine. so that-the compression of theexplosive;chargcrin the com:
pression cylinder reaches its maximum prior to the termination of the compression stroke of theengiue piston 8.
The. head of the compression cylinder-16 is formed with an inlet port, '21. which is i connected with a-carlmreter. mot-showmand thezpassagc oi the gaseous fuel to the inte rior of the cylinder is controlled by an iiiwardly opening valve which is automatically actuated by the suction created in the cylinder during the receding stroke of the piston 18. The head of the cylinder 16 is also provided with an outlet port communicatinr with the passage 23, which connects the interior of the cylinder 16 with the interior of the engine cylinder (5, and the passage of the explosive mixture from the interior of the cylinder 16 to the passage 23 is controlled by an inwardly opening valve 23.
The head of the engine cylinder 0 is provided with an exhaust port "24. and the passage of the products of combustion from the explosion chamber of the cylinder 6 through the port 24 is controlled by an inwardly opening exhaust valve The port connecting the passage 23 with the explosion chamber of the engine cylinder 6 is controlled by an inwnrdl) opening inlet valve 26. The alves and 20 are preferably of the spring closed type and are nieclninically opened by rocker arms 27 and respecly. the rocker arm 37 being actuated by a ram '35) engaged with a push rod 28, and the rocker nrni 3'2 living actuated by a push rod '29 engaging a cam 30. A pivoted rocker arm 31 is also engaged with the exlmusl valu- 215" of the compressor cylinder J0 and lhe rocker arm 31 is engaged with the push rod 29, whereby the inlet valve 26 of the cylinder and the exhaust valve 23 of the compressor cylinder are simultaneously opened.
In operation, the explosive char e is drawn through the inlet passage 21 an into the compressor cylinder 16 during the re ceding stroke of the piston 18, which, as before stated, travels in advance of the engine piston 8. During the subsequent instroke of the piston 18 the inlet valve 22 is auton'iatically closed and the explosive mixture in the cylinder 16 is compressed, and as the piston approaches the limit of its in ward movement the valves 23 and 26 are automatically opened by the cam {50 and push rod 29, thus permitting the highly compressed charge to enter the explosion chamber of the cylinder 6 through the passage Subsequent to the admission of the explosive mixture to the interior of the cylinder 6 the valves 23 and 26 automatically close, and during the continued inward or compression stroke of the engine piston 8 the mixture is compressed to a still higher degree and is finally ignited by a suitable ignition device (not shown). Subsequent to the explosion and expansion of the mixture the exhaust valve 25 is automatically opened by the rocker arm 27, push rod 28 and cam "39 and the producls of combustion are conducted from the cylinder through the passage 24.
What 1 claim is:
1. In an explosive engine, an engine cylinder, a compressor cylinder, pistons reciprocably mounted in said cylinders, said cylinders having a passage therein connecting them valves for controlling the passage of gaseous fuel through said passage, angularly disposed rocker arms engaging said valves, and a push rod engaging the converging terminals of the rocker arms simultaneously actuating said valves.
2. In an explosive engine, an engine cylinder, a compressor cylinder, pistons reciprd cablv mounted in said cylinders. said cylin- (lers having a passage connecting the interiors thereof, inwardly opening valves arranged in the ends of the cylinders for controlling the passage of gaseous fuel through the passage, a reciprocable push rod, and pivoted rocker arms engaging said valves and arranged to be actuated by the push rod simultaneously opening said valves.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
