To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas have invented new and useful Improvements in Display or Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display or advertising devices and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be easily and conveniently used for displaying or exposing an advertising sign in a manner to attract attention to the same and thereby enhance the value of the device foradvertising or display purposes.

With thls object inview the device comprises a barrel which may be in the form of a bottle, cannon or other similar article and which if desired may be mounted in trunnion bearings.

Arms are pivotally mounted at the mouth of the barrel and rods are slidably mounted in the said arms and pivotally connected at their inner ends with a block or similar member mounted for movement in the barrel. The advertising sign is carried by the said rods. A cylinder is located in the bar rel and meansare provided for introducing air under pressure, alternately in the opposite ends of the said cylinder. A piston is mounted for sliding movement in the cylinder and a rod operatively connects the piston with the block. The parts are so connected together that when air is introduced into the 1 cylinder the piston is moved therein and the rods may be projected beyond the end of the barrel and spread so that the sign which is carried by the rods is stretched and the legends which ap ear thereon are visible. On the other hand w on the air is introduced into the cylinder to move the piston in an inward direction the rods are Withdrawn within the barrel and the sign is carried into the barrel by the rods and consequently it is concealed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a lon 'tudinal sectional view of the display or a vertising device.

Fig. 2 is a fragmentary similar view of the same showing the sign in extended position.

As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the barrel 1 is in the form of a bottle, but it is to be understood that the said barrel may be inthe form of any other article as for instance a gun or cannon. The barrel 1 is provided at its sides with trunnions 2 whichmay be pivoted in suitable trunnion bearings (not shown). The barrel 1 is provided at its mouth with longitudinally disposed slots ,3 in which arms 4 are pivotally mounted. Rods 5 are slidably mounted in the, arms 4; and the said rods at their inner ends are pivotally connected with av block 6 which is slidably mounted in the barrel 1. A sign 7 is connected at its corner portions with the outer ends of the rods 5 and the said sign may bear upon. itsadverse surface or face any suitable advertising characters or-legends.

A cylinder 8 is located at the inner end portion of the barrel 1 and a piston 9 indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 is slidably mounted in the cylinder 8. A rod 10 operatively connects the piston 9 with the block 6. Pipes 11 and 12 connect with the opposite end portions of the cylinder 8 beyond the opposite sides of the piston 9 and each of the said pipes is provided with a valve 13. In view of the fact that the said valves are of the same structural arrangement a description of one will sufiice. The casing of each valve 13 is provided with an exhaust port 14 and the casings of the valves 13 connect with nipples 15 which in turn connect with a pipe 16 through which air may be produced into the casings of the valves 13. A valve member 17 is turnably mounted in the casing of each of the valves 13 and each member 17 is provided with a passageway 18 which maybe moved intoregister with the exhaust port 14 and either of the pipes which is connected with the cylinder 8 or may be moved to a position whereby the nipple 15 is connected with either of the pipes .which is connected with the cylinder 8. Handles 19 are connected with the stems of the valve members 17 and a bar 20 is pivotally connected at its ends with the free end portions of the handles 19.

Assuming that the parts of the device are longitudinally whereby the passageway 18 is moved into register with the pipe 11 and the adjacent nipple 15. At the same time the member 17 in theothericasing 13 is moved so that its passageway is brought into register with the pipe 12 and the eX- haust port 14. Thus it will be seen that the air may enter the pipe 11 through that valve casing 13 which is connected with the same and at the same time" the air from the forward portion of the cylinder 8 is exhausted therefrom through the pipe 12.

Consequently the piston 9 is moved along the cylinder 8 and the block 6 is moved in a forward direction whereby the rods 5 are projected beyond the mouth of the barrel 1 and the sign 7 is stretched and the characters or legends which are upon the sign become visible. Should it be desired to withdraw the sign and the arms to position within the barrel 1, the bar 20 is manipulated whereby the air is permitted to flow from the pipe 16 through the the cylinder 8 and at the same time the air at the rear end of the cylinder 8 is exhausted through the pipe 11 and the valve casing which is connected with the said pipe.

A device of the character stated comprising a body, rods slidably mounted at the end of the body, a sign carried by the. rods, a block slidably mounted in the body and pivotally connected with I the rods, a cylinder located in the body, a piston slidably mounted in the body and operatively connected with the block and means for introducing air under pressure at the opposite ends of the cylinder.

A device of the character stated, comprising a body, a sign within the body and collapsed therein, means for projecting the sign from the body, and means-arranged at the mouth of the body for spreadingthe sign as it leaves the body.
