Description

R. KELLEY. nmve BELT. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 6, i917- 'Patented May14,1918.
'ROBERT KELLEY EELLEY, OF IBO'WIE, TEXAS.
:DRIVE-BELT.
Speecatlon of Letters Patent.
.application filed October 6, 19.17. Serial No. 195,087.
'0 @ZZ wiom may concern:
lle it known that l, Bonner KELLEY, a citieen of the United States, residing at Bowie, in the county of Montague and State of o Texas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Drive-Belts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. rlhis invention relates to an improved drive belt, and has for its primary object to provide a drive belt for motor fans and similar light machine elements which will he very strong and durable and is so constructed that possible breakage of the belt is reduced to a minimum.
*t also an important object of the invention to lprovide div belt consistingr u oi leather or is provided e` e portions of connected to tde body porwithout the nee metallic fasnvention to provide an inexpensive driving elt for light machinery which will not be iable to slip upon the belt wheels or become i and displaced therefrom. che above and other obiects in view, In y invention consists in the novel features or construction. co'fnhination, and arrangenari' hereinafter more fully tm ma .l in acorn with the pre*- o the nvention;
entary view of the lich the l eelt is formed;
i i 1e :o the drawing, 5 desigs *in hand or leather or other suitable flexible erlal which is or the reqnisitelength an thickness. |This leather strap is reducedin width, as shown at 6, said reduced portions or the strap extending; oin points equidistantly snaeed from the center or the strap to its opposite extremities. or wider portion of the strap is provided at spaced points with slits i extending width thereof and terminating in relation to the oposite longitodinal of the strap.
also a 'further general object ot the' As seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the body portion of the strap is bent into circular form and the relatively narrow end portions 6 lapped upon each other. These narrow end portions of the strap which extend in opposite directions, are threaded or laced through the slits 7 extending between said slits alternately upon the inner and outer faces of the body portion of the strap. Each of the narrow portions 6 of the belt strap is provided in spaced relation to its atented May id, 14.915.,`
reeextremity with the transverse slit or i opening 8, such extremities of the strap being tapered or reduced in width as indicated at 9. The portions 6 or the strap are each of suicient lengthfto extend halfway around the body portion of the strap, and onefof the tapering terminals 9 or" the strap is inserted through the slit 8 in the other end of the strop :trom the outer side of the belt' and extended inwardly through one of the' slits 7, while the other tapered extremity 9 of the strap is inserted through thevother of the slits 8 from the inner side of the belt and extended outwardly through one of the slits 7, as clearly shown in Fig.- 3 oit the drawin s.
A driving belt eonstructed'in the manner above explained provides two thicknesses oit material which are held in close, intimate contact throughout the extent of the helt. Thus, I produce a belt of great durability and without stitching, cementing, or otherwise mechanically connecting the parts et the belt to each other. Such connections quickly Wear out so that the belt breaks orf through the slits in the belt body, 'the belt is provided with waced portions" on its inner race simulating teeth which have a rictional gripping engagement with the Tperipheral faces or the belt wheels, and counteract any tendency of the belt to slip upon the wheels. lso, by lacing the belt ends to the belt body in the manner explained, the greater .the pull or strain upon the belt. the tighter will the interlaced parts thereof be held together.
From the foregoing", the construction and several advantages o1? mv improved driving belt will be clearly and fully understood. The invention is primarily designed for use in driving the ,ventilating fan of a motor vehicle. but it is manifest. of course, that the belt may be made of anv desired width and length and can be einioloyed -or use in connection with various other light machini eebed my invention, cl2-11m and. seme by Lat-- a Singh maerm mung a wel echa@ 'pm-own @funded ,neran, and @www @mi upm. @ha inne-f and
