Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1916. Serial No. 99,845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. GAIssnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Mill, of which the following is a specification.
.The subject of this invention is a grinding mill wherein a yieldingly held rotary bur is cooperatively associated with a stationary concave.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a grinding mill having novel means for exerting a yieldable thrust against one end of the shaft of the movable bur, said end bearing being secured in position in a novel manner and constituting an oil cup whereby friction is materially reduced.
A further object is to provide an end hearing so mounted as to allow longitudinal movement, of the shaft and the revoluble bur should a nut, stone or other hard object become lodged within the mill, this movement preventing injury to the mill.
Another object is to provide improved means whereby the mill can be operated either by hand or power, it being possible to quickly convert the machine for use in either manner.
A further object is to provide a novel form of cutoff whereby the control of material supplied to the burs can be effected readily.
A still further object is to provide a novel form of belt guide for use in connection with the mill, this guide being shiftable to either of two positions so as to act upon a belt extending to the right or to the left from the mill.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com-- bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the base or standard of the mill, the same supporting a substantially conical concave 2 from the large end of which is extended an outlet spout A hopper 4; discharges material downwardly onto the concave and is provided, in one wall, with a longitudinal slot 5 adapted to receive a binding screw 6. This screw is extended through a stem 7 the upper end of which is extended outwardly as at 8 to form a handle which is supported outside of the hopper, as shown particularly in Fig. 3. The lower end of stem 7 has a cutoff blade 9 formed integral therewith, this blade being adapted to fit at its lower end against the wall 10 of the feed opening at the upper end of the concave 2, there beinga deflect ing wing 11 along one side of the blade 9 so that material discharged onto blade 9 will be deflected laterally toward the small end of the concave 2-. Obviously by loosening the bolt 6 the cutoff blade can be adjusted upwardly any desired distance, thus to regulate the flow of material from the hopper 4 and into the concave.
Fitted against and secured to one side of the concave is a head 12 extending over and forming a part of the spout 3, this head being provided, at a point adjacent its cen ter, with a bearing 13 in which is journaled a shaft 14. Said shaft is also journaled in a bearing 15 located at the opposite side of the mill and mounted on the shaft 14:

is a loose pulley 16 while another pulley 1'7 is secured on said shaft. Pulley 17 has an opening 18 in the periphery thereof adapted to receive a stem 19 which is detachably secured to the hub 20 of pulley 17 by means of a bolt 21 or in any other suitable manner. stem 19 merges into an arm which lies. close to the peripheries of pulleys l7 and 16 and merges into a crank arin by means of which pulley 17 and shaft 1a can be rotated by hand.
Secured to shaft lei so as to rotate therewith is conical bur 2i mounted to work upon the concave 2, this bur being provided, at its large end, with a fiat bur 25 cotiperating with a fiat bur 26 upon one side of the hopper l and concave 2.
The head 12 is provided in its upper end portion with a keyhole slot 27, while formed in the lower portion of the head are opposed openings 28 having enlargements 29 adjacent their upper ends. These enlargements are extended toward each other and also extend over lugs 30 formed upon the inner face of the head 12.
The openings 28 are adapted to receive feet 31 formed at the lower ends of downwardly diverging curved leg s32 extending from a plate 33 constituting a thrust bearing. This platehas a recess 34: in its inner face, the bottom of the recess being inclined downwardly toward the inner end wall of the recess to form a lubricant container such as shown particularly in Fig. 2 at 35. An opening 36 for the admission of lubricant to this container is formed in the upper portion of the plate as shown in Fig. 2 and discharges into the recess 3%.
lhe feet 31 are extended toward each other and are of a width slightly less than that or" the enlarged upper end portions of the openings 28. Thus it will be apparent that the feet can be inserted through the enlarged portions 29 of said openings and then lowered so as to bring the lower ends of legs 32' in the lower portions of the openings 28 and to bring the laterally projecting portions of the feet 31 under the lugs 30.
A bolt 37 is slidably mounted in an arm 38 extending from plate 33, this bolt having a squared portion 39 arranged close to the head 4E0 of the bolt. This squared portion is adapted to be inserted in the keyhole slot 27,'the head 40 being readily passed through the upper or enlarged end of the slot 27. Bolt 37 has an adjusting nut 41 on the outer end portion thereof and a coiled spring i2 is interposed between said nut and the arm 38. By means of nut t1 the compression of spring 42 can be regulated. This spring is designed to hold the inner end wall of the recess 3% pressed yieldingly against the end of shaft l i but, when said shaft is subjected to end thrust, as by the discharge of an unyielding object such as a nut or stone onto the concave 2, the spring d2 will yield and permit plate 33 to swing outwardly away from the head 12 with the result thatthe bur 2-4 will move away from the concave and provide sufficient clearance to allow the obstruction to pass through the machine without injury to the machine.

Either of these arms is adapted to be engaged by a slide 44: having a longitudinal slot to, the outer face of the slide being channeled as indicated particularly in Big. 6. A bolt 46 extends through the slot t5, the angular head 47 of the bolt resting between the sides of the channel in the slide. This bolt also extends through an opening in one of the guides a3 and has a nut %8 whereby the slide ll can be securely clamped to its guide and thus held against longitudinal displacement, One end portion of the slide is offset laterally as at 49 to provide a head 50. lhis head fits within a transverse groove 51 formed in a late 52 from which extend guide fingers 53. handle 5% projects upwardly from the plate 52 and a bolt 55 is extended through the plate 52' and into the head 50 where it is secured so as to hold the fingers 53 and handle 54 fixed relative to the head 50. The fingers 53 are adapted to extend across opposite sides of a drive belt and by loosening nuts 48 the slide ll-e can be shifted so that the belt will be held by the guide fingers 53 on either of the pulleys l6 and 17. used, it is of course necessary to remove the crank 23 from pulley 17. In Fig. 2, the guide fingers 53 have been illustrated in position to hold a belt on the loose pulley l6. Gbviously these fingers can be adjusted toward the hopper i so as to properly guide the belt on the fixed pulley 17. The handle 5i constitutes means whereby the side guide fingers 53 can be readily shifted after bolt to has been loosened.
It will be obvious that the slide ll ca n be laced at either side of the machine so as thus to properly guide a belt extending either to the right or to the left of the machin from the pulleys.
